If the government invest in programs that are irrelevant for the economic development of the country the country will be at a loss, irrespective of the amount of resources allocated. If we invest in programs or courses which do not impart skills and knowledge which can be used in the country we will still be in the dark. Secondly there is lot of redundancy or duplication of programs, e.g. each of the country’s old universities have business administration programs; how many business graduates can be absorbed by the economy, The government universities churn out over 15,000 graduates each year with varying skills and knowledge from mediocre to fair. Who is going to waste his/her money on employing graduates who cannot fairly communicate verbally or in writing, graduates who lack analytical and problem solving skills; some of these graduates don’t even possess the basic knowledge of their major fields of study. What are we teaching the children at elementary and secondary schools? How is knowledge being imparted? If college students can purchase some old photo-copied notes of their lecturers, chew and pour them without understanding the course material how do you expect them to perform in the real world.
The government should set up a committee to revamp education at each level; emphasizing on quality relevant education instead of mass production of illiterate (excuse me to say “not very uselful”) graduates and school children. We may need more technical and two-year colleges instead of 4-year useless programs.

My observation is for majority of Ghanaians to choose the cheaper option of acquiring degrees to rise up the social ladder than to be productive to create wealth. Are you surprised most of the theft is by pblic officaials? They do nothing but yet want to get rich so they go for Masters degrees for promotion at the work place so the can have access to the awarding positions, then strike deals with corrupt people in the private sector to get rich quick before anyone says Jack! Do you thing any private busines person can succeed in corruption if not aided or colluded by a public offical? Check the police, customs, banks, construction, elections etc etc. The establishment will noit allow their cake to be taken out of their mouth unless an honest successful business person takes over the reins of government, we will continue this rat race (talk about the problem, suggests solutions but nobody will implement).

If salaries have been paid, then what is this item called "Book & Research Allowance" ? Why are we still paying such items with no benefit to the people of Ghana ? How many discoveries have we heard of from the Universities ? Even developed countries do not pay this ! You have an idea, you fill an application and compete with others for a grant; No idea, no grant !

I am sure that when the lecturers met the person who proposed this solution was considered the wisest and the person who could not think of even one solution the least wise; for after all in the land of the blind the only one eyed person becomes the leader.
If this is the case then the executive and the MPs (representatives) must attend to this with the utmost urgency.
There have been reports of lack of police presence during University exams. This must also be addressed.
I am sure the lecturers are thinking about how to balance their budgets and save for the future. I came across this helpful article and I think every lecturer must read it.

You see, when intellectuals fail to understand the plight of a nation and stress on WHAT IS GOOD FOR THEM only, then is it worth going to school at all? UTAG must know that the country will move on if they choose to join the Unemployed Graduates Association. They better go and establish their own universities; that is democratic enough. With the proliferation of tertiary education, their venom is deflated, except those (and most of them) who are conservative - the old good-for-nothing ones.
