During the US crises, the salary of existing government employees was frozen for 3 years, in addition to a freeze on the hiring of non-essential personnel. You can't be in a hole and continue to dig deeper. Something has to give and it would be wise for Mahama to take the bull by the horn and rescue the country.

“we can sacrifice, but it will be difficult to over-sacrifice…looking at the current increment in utility bills, it will make livelihood unproductive and unbearable if you say you will not increase salaries. They are just trying to get people out of job…we should all look for a way out. The solution is not to put people out of work."

What work are doing. Most civil servants in Ghana do nothing. Just receive pay and with their productivity zero or in the negative they are killing Ghana slowly.

Ghana cannot spend 70% of taxes collected on payroll alone. It is as if a wage earner spending that percentage of wages on food alone. These are the options facing the government; reduce the labor force or reduce the rate of pay or increase rate of taxes or do all the three. Any of the options is unpopular and inherently politically suicidal. But if the nation has to be saved, this bitter medicine must be swallowed
