Look at the idiot Mugabe and what he has done to Zimbabwe. And let us not delude ourselves Nkrumah would have been perhaps the same or maybe worse than Mugabe. Yes he started well but sadly all the writings were on the wall from history that he was heading the wrong direction. After Independence the world order is not what you see today and for Ghana to be the first black African country to gain its independence the pressure was on him to deliver socioe-conomic independence as well. The west was not willing to help. Nkrumah sought help from the west and was denied. The only help he got was from China and Russia.- thus he went where he could get help. Remember the 50s and 60s was civil rights revolution period in America. You had leaders such Dr Martin Luther King and co co-operating with Dr. Nkrumah and the west did not like that.

Dr. Nkrumah was in constant fear of a coup organized by the west and so he had to protect his grip on power. You could label him a dictator but he was protecting his government.

Nevertheless, he ideology of governing Ghana at that time is unmatchable. Some of the infrastructure he put in Ghana are still standing tall.

Dr Nkrumah was educated in the United States and knew much about the west than East but he did not get any help from the west that is why he turned to the East. There was a fear by the West that he was going to turn Africa to a super power by uniting Africa into the United States of Africa. Africa with its rich natural resources will be unbeatable. It is only shallow minded people who say that the coup to overthrow him was a good one.

The young pioneer program was to instill the African /Ghanian personality in our youth : I am black and proud. Pride in your nationality etc....
Union Government was to train Ghana to the pan-African idea of united states of Africa with one president and Governors of other states. Dr Nkrumah wrote about 12 books. I suggest Hayford to read them before assessing a man he has no idea of.

America, Britain, Holland, France, Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and other western European countries had kept Africa under slavery and colonial dictatorship for hundreds of years until Kwame Nkrumah stepped in to kick them out. They (the West) were those who fought against the democratic development and human rights of Africans. The number of Africans that were slaughtered, killed or genetically/culturally mutilated and displaced during the slave and colonial holocaust, makes it the worlds worse humanitarian disaster for all time. It was Kwame Nkrumah who single-handedly put a stop to this unGodly carnage of Africa.

Those Africans who have not yet recovered from the psychological mutilation of the African during this most shameful episode of world history and who therefore think that the only way out of their misery is by adopting the evil ways of their historical oppressors, are doomed, like Casely Hayford, to live forever and die in the chains of mental slavery.

When Silos were built in Kumasi etc. to store cocoa to force the world price to go up, our 'Masters' switched on the propaganda machine and we were told that the Silos were meant to store food and that at every meal time, all people would go and queue up to obtain their food. We were made to believe that in 'Communist' countries that is what happened! Take a look at China now and ask yourself, even if Nkrumah aligned himself to China and the 'Communist Block', was that in itself a mortal sin to remove him by force and plunge our Dear Ghana into what it is today? Yes he started well, my father was with the CPP, I have read Nkrumah's book. But there is something wrong with black African's. He knew very well the ways of the colonial master and outwitted them to attain independence for you to have mouth in public talk bullshit. They became offended and swore to overthrow him. It is said that if the 'fool's eyes get opened the game is over' literally if the producer of raw materials start to industralise then the economies in the western world will come to a standstill...hence stop him. They succeeded by using our own people. No wonder a son of those Nkrumah outwitted is coming out to discredit him. Look at the Tema Motorway. This is a ' living testimony' and look at the highway from Accra to Kumasi. For eight good years my own brother Kuffour could not complete that highway for Mahama to continue to Paga and Burkinabe finish it for their goods to be transported from Tema to Ouagadugu. This guy, as I know from one of comments was in elementary school and one way or another benefitted from the Nana Akuffo Addo' free- education and talking rubbish. Nkrumah knew and understood politics and how to concientise the mentality of Ghanaians through children. In the U.S.A. educating children is every govt. first agenda. Why? Because they are the future hence Nkrumah knew this by institutioning the Young Pioneers to love and cherish nothing but Ghana and Africa. If Nkrumah had died on the throne no young and old pioneer would steal from the state coffers. It would be a taboo to do that. Now the order of the day is.....lawyers have stopped going to courts, doctors vacating their posts, engineers no more at place of work only to see them in the bandwagon of SANKWAN PARTY. Ghana produce doctors for other countries for free. I taught for sixteen years before leaving the shores of Ghana. I paid back a little of the money the farmer toiled for my training as a teacher. What do we see of the doctors. Here in the U.S.A. the loan given to one to become a doctor will follow him for rest of his life. Look at maritime college,look at the additional secondary schools almost in all regions, look at the abandoned factories...Jute...Silos.at Tema. Akosombo...Atomic enery at his time. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee are you kidding me. At least I am older than Ghana by three years.

Even the Akosombo dam to power our factories, hospitals and homes was opposed by the so called democrats who trooped to America to scupper plans for Sarpong's father's hut to have electricity. The German's have today laid on a red carpet for the Chinese. The UK PM, his Chancellor and the London Mayor trooped to Beijing to BEG for investments. You don't even know China you are talking about. China's economy was not worth anything until they adopted the capitalist model and opened their economy to the outside world. More than thousand American companies are now in China, including KFC with more than 1000 stores, McDonalds, Whatubuger etc.

Ghana avoided the Congo tragedy because Nkrumah was rightly removed.

The record is there for anybody who cares to do a research to know that, Ghana started its economic decline in 1963 when we started borrowing to support our budget. When you do monetization, it means you have deliberately pegged your currency to the major ones with the hope that it's value will cope or improve.

Having this, we expected the BOP to improve through prudent economic policies but Bawumia's Dagati economic policies coupled with that of Koookoase bush meat economics only saw more importation of rice from india when Ghana could have invested in agriculture to produce own rice.And so, Bawumia should not think Ghanaians are illiterate as he is.

At this stage of our economic development, the only way is to borrow but invest the borrowing wisely into productive activities such as what the current government is doing.

That said, Bawumia should stop his Dagati economics as these days even the Kookoase opposition npp MP's are well awake.

If he was alive today, I would have prosecuted him for having caused financial loss to the state of Ghana. When I first read what he said about the June 4th and 31st Dec coups being the cause of the present econ. challenges, I knew that the man has got a screw loose! I didn't waste my time commenting on the article but suspected that he'd be in favour of the CIA-sponsored coup of 1966.

I read Pol. Science, among other things. That's why I know that a one-party constitutional govt as adopted by some African govts upon indep. is, i.e., the Third World variant based on traditional African consensual democracy, is closer to the Greek concept of democracy than the Western plural or liberal democracy. So, within the paradigm in which Kwame Nkrumah operated at the time, his regime and his actions were just as democratic as they come. Only uneducated idiots like this bloke and his ilk can continue to languish in their ignorance and reactionary backwardness.

Where and when did the British establish plural democracy to rule us? Where in Ghana did we have established pol. parties competing for pol. power prior to 1950?

He came to prominence through UGCC made up of the Big Six but after he became Prime Minister, he turned against all of them. They were his source of wisdom and intellect so when he relegated them, he became average at best and exposed himself to whatever became of him. It is well documented that he became an enemy unto himself. He became a ruthless dictator and squandered Ghana's limited resources.

So yea Kingsley Hayford is right in saying that Nkrumah needed to go but he shouldn't have been overthrown through a military coup. There's no excuse for violence, then again, Nkrumah had become very violent by then so maybe he deserved. You can live by the gun and expect to die by the pen.

Improving the lives of others is also important. Look at the picture again and you will see his dignity, respect, boldness, determination and no nonsense attitude written in his face. As a young nation, we had a lot of money that the British left us when we got our independence. We were only 7 million people at the time. He could have use the money to do more than he did. Due to his desire to rule Africa, he gave most of the money to other West African Countries, supported other Liberation movements all across the continent and almost forgot that Ghana needed to stand on her young feet first before helping others. When his own ministers pointed this out to him, he became offended, as for members of the opposition, he treated them like they were from another planet. Even those who bought his ticket to come to Ghana died at his hand. In short, Nkrumah was greedy, a dictator and too ambitious. Well, he said he will never die but he is dead and gone now. Man proposes, God disposes. I was a Young Pioneer so I know what I am talking about. He was our God. If he was not power drunk and wanted too much fame, how could he trust the West and accept to travel to Hanoi to broker peace? a black man as such. I thought he was smart, but in reality, he was not, it was just a trap for him to leave Ghana and he felt for it. What most people do not know is that just before the coup, there were shortages of commodities and farmers were worried and parents did not trust their own children. he was turning the country into a communist country. Where do you think the word tighten your belt came from. I think, as a society, we should have debate on certain subjects like this to find out the good and the bad of every situation and learn from it. Every leader Ghana will have will come and do their part. it is our duty to retain or vote them out if only we will reason as a country with a people with one destiny but not to support a bad leader because he or she is from our tribe. Let us think about Ghana as our country and what we are leaving to the next generation of Ghana.

Nkrumah had just completed his 8 years of the presidency. He went through all kind of tribulations with Danquah and short man Busia. Many innocent people were killed or hurt from the malfeasant actions of these two spooky savages. Kwame Nkrumah utter desolation response to all these violence was to have a dashingly and singularly line of action to protect the rest of the people. NPP had inherited this kind of boxing metaphors in their swooning evil clutches of life in their coconuts from Danquah and Busia tradition. I hate it when they mention Dumbo as one of them. Dumbo was never a violent man or BK Adama and Joeto Kaleo.
Its a new day and Ghanaians optimism is guarded with resigned thinking and composure for change which is progressive Ghana. And I promised you that,they will show this in the next election. NPP will never come to power anytime soon with such conscious arrogance.
Its time for NPP to dress themselves in a nonviolent suit without a casque. And not wearing the medieval helmet will be by selecting a non-Akan to lead the party and not Kyem and Ashanti exchange hat. There have to be a compromise somewhere for the gratuitous violence perpetrated by NPP since Danquah initiated it.

Unless the article missed the crux of his Economic argument, Casely-Hayford failed to prove what he claims to be the purpose his crusade.

Having followed his submissions and utterances for sometime, I am convinced he has a personal bone to pick with Nkrumah, and does not argue solely from an objective patriotic standpoint.

He is of one those outspoken individuals who seem to have taken a solemn pledge to avenge their parents over the late President's unkind treatment of those parents. No one can condemn these offsprings of past prominent Ghanaian leaders for their current actions and utterances to undermine Nkrumah's fame. I might do the same. But it is only fair for these Nkrumah-haters to fully declare their emotional attachment to the crusade they are leading.

Often, these Nkrumah-bashers conveniently keep mum over their parents' possible complicity in certain blatant hostile acts against Nkrumah beyond the normal and decent precepts of the same Democracy they would be chastising Nkrumah for denying the People.

We should ask Mr. Casely-Hayford why he thinks Nkrumah did not declare his dictatorship immediately after our Independence and the CPP had the full control of the Government.

In this day of Global fast wave of democracy quest, as seen in the Arab Spring, it is deceptively easy to demonize our past leaders with a hindsight of perfect vision, without putting their behaviors in context.

May we also ask Mr. Casely-Hayford if he would recommend the overthrow of the Saudi and Jordanian Governments, for instance, since they are no Democracies at all.

Let us wait and hear his take on that before proceeding with the debate.

But the one thing with which any reasonable citizen of a nation will agree is that a military coup is never a good thing. There can never be justification for it. I am surprised that Mr. Casely-Hayford will even attempt to justify the staging of a military coup. There is a difference between a popular uprising and a few greedy soldiers taking up arms and acting like armed robbers. By the way, Mr. Casely-Hayford should also have emphasized that the 1966 coup was engineered by the CIA, and then explain how the interest of the ordinary Ghanaian compelled the CIA to engineer that military coup.

How nonsensical it is to think that this man's overthrow was a good thing. He set Afrika on the path of complete eradication of colonial rule.

An Afrika who's people are completely free to build the continent for Afrikans is a GREAT THING. Only the person who enjoys being ruled is happy for the overthrow of those who want freedom.
