Folks, My experience between 2000 and now building my house and some Flats show the poor workmanship of workers. Sometimes deliberate village trained apprenticed men, sometimes cutting corners on iron rods and component materials, and sometimes out of ignorance. Cheap Chinese imported materials is also a reason.
There is the need for certification and standards of artisans and craftsmen in Ghana. I alerted GREDA and the government but no action.

The only surprising thing about collapsing buildings in Ghana is the fact that they do not occur everyday and that they do not kill people more than they are doing. We live in a society where basic laws and processes have gone to the dogs with no one ready to follow just two steps put in place by the law. The question is does the owner of this building have a building permit and which municipality approved it. If the owner does not have a building permit then the question is does the municipality know about this illegal structure and if so what did they do about it. Another question is which engineers Architects,geo-technical surveyors structural engineers, contractor etc were employed to design and build this building. In Ghana this matter will come and go without anything happening to anyone . However in some serious countries all the people who have something to do with the structure would go to jail. The Achimota one came and passed without anyone being held accountable so what do you think will happen this time . Absolute nothing. This is Ghana You are welcome.

I used to wonder how bad builders could obtain permits to build so many frightening structures across the nation till I came to the realization that in Ghana safety measures can be overriden to accommodate a bidder with a negotiable demand with money.
The so-called City Engineers, town planners, safety inspectors are mere nominal elements in an administrative process fraught with nonchalance, internecine politics, greed, ignorance and lack of leadership hands-on involvement.
After 57 years of Independence we must all bow our heads down in deep introspection to search for reasons behind our failures and shortcomings.
Take a high-rise building under construction at the Tetteh Quarshie Exchange as an example of my concern.
A mere spectacle of the building makes an onlooker question the sanity behind designing a forty story building whose top half over-laps the bottom half in weight and structure.
It is an obvious nursery of disaster awaiting its unfortunate day like this hotel's.
In a society where bribery and corruption take a better bite of civility, without good leadership interventions, they become difficult to control and prone to turning cancerous with ugly results of disorder and disaster.

We Ghanaians don't respect artisans, and the system and parents keep pushing our children to became lawyers, doctors an even engineers. But trust me there is no construction engineer who ever lays 1 block or casts 1 pillar himself. We the educated ones leave that to UN-schooled masons, carpenters, steel benders etc. who don't even understand the basics about about construction because THERE IS NO SCHOOL FOR REAL PROFESSIONAL CONSTRUCTION SKILLS TRAINING.

If the AMA had stopped them several times because they don't have permit. 1 They should have ensured their inspectors monitored to see if work was still ongoing. 2. They should have sent the owner to court to stop him of that illegality. 3. AMA should have demolished the building after a court order. If they did nothing of this then if means they are not fit to stay in office because they cannot enforce laws. After what happened to the Melcom building I thought they would have been serious on such issues. It is because in Ghana we hire but we hardly fire. The Mayor must take the responsibility for this lapse and resign or be fired. Ghana must work with those who are ready to work.

Hatred truly has a way of eating at people. In the case of Ghana, tribal hatred masked by political parties is showing us all how enacting bad laws by parliament controlled by any party hell bent on rewriting history and or marking their territory is wreaking havoc on Ghanaians. The direct linkages between collapsing concrete buildings (not mud house during rainy seasons or torrential rains) and Ghana's decentralization of land planning and development scheme is undeniable.
At best what advocates of land planning and development scheme touted was local oversight even when they knew darn well that in a culture of bribery, corruption and lack of standards what they seek was a free-for-all bribery schemes that will encourage shoddy work; we traded standards for expediency. There is no town, district, metro areas in Ghana where there are enough staff at land registration offices, construction permit offices, construction inspectors, etc and the capabilities to vigorously and effectively provide needed oversight to all the tasks they are mandated to do. So while the delay of a month or two would at least ensure there is a body present at a construction site, we chose not to delay construction at the expense of safety and human lives. It is the responsibility of departments with jurisdiction to identify cheap and faulty materials as well as poor construction methods that do not meet standard and no amount of decentralization will reconcile these loop holes we have unwittingly created. Ghana does not have to do what is practiced in the UK or USA not because those practices are not good but because we do not have the needed institutions of state with professional staff that will ensure successful outcomes as they do in the UK or USA. Let us, as a nation stop the blind transplantation of everything we see happen in civilized and developed UK or USA until we can have all requisite entities in place and are capable of holding people accountable for misdeeds at their hands or under their watch.

In Uk they take building regulations very seriously to avoid catastrophies like this. Even if u wanna build any extension to your own house,be it an extra toilet, bathroom or bedroom, you have to consult the council and get approval from building inspectors. Also during the course of the work the building inspectors will be visiting tomake sure you follow the right standard regulations

The premier university of Ghana - The University of Ghana Legon sadly does not appear in the top 500 universities on earth. This must be corrected immediately. The university in order to achieve this must improve:
1) Faculty student ratio
2) The number of research projects it carries out
3) The test scores of its entry class (internationally normalised)
4) Employers' review of performance of its graduates (local and abroad)
5) Peer review by other universities

THE SOIL ENGINEER WILL ADVISE YOU HOW TO BUILD A SOUND FOUNDATION. ALL THESE PROFESSIONALS COME TOGETHER TO GIVE YOU A SOUND ADVICE TO GO ABOUT BUILDING A GOOD STRUCTURE THAT WILL NOT COLLAPSE.

When a country fails to respect systems and laws that is what happens.
Design and construction of buildings are for professionals and that is it. It is sad that whilst our Building Regulations stipulates persons authorised to endorse drawings, most District Assemblies disregard this basic aspect of an LI. It hapeened to O.A(Ksi), Melcom(Accra),Obuasi. No lessons were learnt except for the usual knee jerk reactions. It will continue to happen until we decide to do the right things.

i sometimes wonder who we are as a people. isn't it fascinating how we handle issues? we talk 100% and act 0%. we do not care about anything. all we care about is...i don't even know...em...nothing. not quite long, a shopping mall collapsed, trapping sand killing lots of people most of whom were young people -future leaders. well let say that was the first of it kind. the president had to call for international help. months after the incident, the noise about the whole issue has ceased and the everything about it forgotten. what happened to the owner of the building? what happened to the constructor of the building? who were supposed to essure that construction standards are upheld? well, what even caused the fall? did you copy the mayor's statement on the whole collapse saga? that should tell you the real state of the nation. it saddens my heart sometimes when i visit a government or public offices. people behave as though they own the offices and anything they do for you, its a favor they are doing hence you have to show appreciation by paying something. whiles some are suppose to be on the field watching out for problems and reporting, they sit in the comfort of their homes and even when citizens identify and report, they don't seem to care? if it took a fisherman to report the case of falling Adome bridge and recent motorway bridge by a citizen, then where lies our seriousness as a country? what action was taken by the mayor and the constructions technical team of both the AMA and the Ministries responsible?

What lessons were learnt from the Melcom building collapse? Obviously, not! If lessons were ever learnt from the Melcom disaster, the Government and the appropriate institutions would have put measures in place to avoid this kind of structural collapse. In Ghana, building regulations are not enforced due to corruption. And of course, culprits of such buildings collapse are never punished.
Clearly, looking at this picture, the structure probably caved-in due to poor quality of concrete/lack of reinforcements in the building as result of contractors/builders cutting corners by using substandard materials and poor workmanship.

It's time for the corrupt Accra Mayor, Oku Vanderpuye to go! Other than arranging judgement debt scams to loot the property of the city and harassing vendors, this idiot performs no oversight whatsoever of city affairs. Government should hire all these graduate civil engineers from KNUST without jobs to perform inspections and other regulatory duties instead of filling Boards, Authorities, and Committees and Ambassadorship positions with political appointees and wasting precious money.

Nii Oko- Vandapour was called to stop the development of this building when it was coming up but he refused to come but now he is at the scene as if he is sympathising with the people. if you ask him today, he will deny.
Why all this collapse buildings? What kind of materials are they using?
They are using MADE IN GHANA CEMENT, and above all, less than the amount specified by the engineers
The materials are not only bad but they also use cheap labor for construction
This is evidence of the kind of architecture and materials used for the construction. Most of the time, the engineering is good bud the builders use cheap materials and usually LESS of it.
This is why people should be careful what flat they buy -- there so many flats mushrooming everywhere in Ghana but I doubt if proper inspections were done at various points of construction.
Folks, My experience between 2000 and now building my house and some Flats show the poor workmanship of workers. Sometimes deliberate village trained apprenticed men, sometimes cutting corners on iron rods and component mater ...
