  Politicized everything in Ghana!If the two Associations had anything to add, they should have come out with proposals to promote free SHS education. Their remarks on the President's announcement on this issue tells a lot about their intentions! Office holders of associations such as NAGRAT & GNAT ought to have attained a certain level of education which enables critical thinking. I hope what we have read here is a misrepresentation of their true positions on free SHS. Otherwise Ghana is in deep trouble! Politicizing every national issue to this extent is unfortunate.

  For starters,I'm dismayed how my fellow countrymen and women would even vote for a leader in this day and age who proclaims to be a Socialist.That statement should have been a deal breaker outright.Even the Chinese and their cousins,the Russians are not proclaiming top be Socialists anymore.They might not say it at the roof tops of world fora but they are practicing free market policies than the Americans these days and it's working for them whilst the U.S.is pilling up crippling debts.
  Our leaders should look at Europe and what social democracy policies over the years have done to their nations and LEARN QUICKLY.
  Nurturing dependency mentality in Ghana under the guise of helping the poor is going to create a whole new brand of citizenry that would substitute hard work and self-reliance for dependency on government pittance.
  In the mean the elites would have reason to milk millions,if not billions,from our newly found oil wealth all in the name of introducing "politically correct" programs like YES and free SHS educations.

  But I do not think they need to fear. Even in the private schools where educational standard is high, parents engage teachers for extra tuition. if free secondary education will lower standards, then the teachers rather need to embrace it because more parents will pay for extra private tuition/

  In our trial of democracy it is somehow a person's right to say his/her mind but it is too much a pity for Ghana to give sensitive positions to people who can not handle it with a good credibilty. They always make comments full of stupidity and out of context due to their selfishness and tribal hatred.
  
  Foolish for nothing degree holders of the NAGRAT AND GNAT Executives ought to leave Ghana with peace, and stop their selfish tribal and political stupidity and bigotry utterances, which do much harm to Ghana than good.
  
  It is not naturally compulsory to comment when one does not have a word of wisdom to offer, since doing that will always expose one to stupidity. These officials of the above named organisation should understand there are many rational educated ones there in Ghana who have Ghana right on their hearts and are aware of the realities of education than they could visualise with the posiotions they hold at poresent.

  Free education will not lower standards. What lowers standards and moral is a child who is brilliant but cannot continue their education because his/her parents can't afford. Private schools will always be better in academic performance level than public. It is not only in Ghana but everywhere. You get what you pay for. If A takes a taxi and B takes a public transport from point C to D, then don't expect them to get there at the same time. However, it does not mean the one who gets there first has more advantages so far as they all have goals to achieve and works towards it. I had public education through my mother's hard work and have worked hard to get to where I am. I know two of my friends who were intelligent when we were young. Their parents spent thousands in private schools and all they did was hop from school A to school B to C without achieving much with the parents investment. What is wrong with you, NAGRAT/GNAT leaders? Get grips with realities of life.

In summary, at the current state of public schools, quality is very low..simply put! Some classrooms still do not have chairs or desks, some blocks have cracks that you yourself can pass through. Teachers in rural areas are poorly cared for, some schools do not have all textbooks, etc. When schools ask parents to pay for anything at all, the response is that, the school is extorting since Govt. says everything is free. Do you know what is termed as free education? In Gh, free education means free tuition. Apart from that, there is no money for sporting activities, no money for excursions, no money for any other thing. Don't these lower levels of education? This is just the same as the NHIS. It just lowered health delivery because, Govt. failed to pay for all bills. Affected hospitals then refused to care for those on NHIS cards. Is that improvement in health delivery or lowering of health delivery? Think again!

  What Ghanaians love to hear is FREE and they forget about everything. If you study present SHS school fees, you will find out that day students pay close to nothing. That is the charge for tuition. This, according to Mahama will be free. So day students will not pay any tuition fee. Bear in mind that Govt will not take pout the PTA fees etc so there will be a fee BUT NOT TUITION. Nothing comes entirely free, my dears. Even death which no one buys does not come entirely free. It comes at a cost and that cost is pain and sorrow.

I the student has more brains or motive than the teacher.. then except by online work nothing will improve.. probably 75-80% of schools in usa are free high school (paid by tax dollars)...the rest are private schools...and since some of those are church schools they may spend too much time on religion and not enough on school to produce good results...Pay the teachers good and regular, maintain the schools. And test the Teachers and make sure they are smarter than the kids! Make sure they come to work 5 days per week for 180 days or more (some usa state requirement for min. attendance)

I know of some brilliant JHS students who, for lack of funds, could not continue their education, so I think the free SHS idea is a good thing. I strongly suspect that NAGRAT and GNAT are opposing the idea because they think that President Mahama is preempting their campaign message for the 2016 elections. If H.E. Mahama starts a free SHS education, what message is Nana Akuffo Addo going to use as his campaign slogan? This is where their fear lies.
  
  Ghanaians should notice the difference between the two proposals: one is saying he will do it gradually or systematically while the other is saying he is going to do it all at once. When the latter was asked how he was going to finance it he was found fumbling. It is a national policy, so let us all embrace it.

  Look at how our brothers and sisters in the North have now become very good intellectuals and enterpreneurs because of free education in that area.My only problmem with it is that it should not be a wholesale free shs.That means govt must put in place administrative structures and conditions to help only the poor families,based on their annual income.We need prudent measures to make it sustainable,that is to say families with high salaries or good financial backgrounds should be exempted.That is what Kwame Nkrumah did in the 60's because the North was very poor at that time and needed State intervention.Today,our economic situation is not very bouyant to make a wholesale free shs.At least,families must present their tax clearance certificates to the school administration for them to determine who qualifies.This also brings to mind govt's obligation to make annual revenue declaration compulsory,or we reintroduce Basic Rates for every adult in the country.Ofcourse,it's a political game but you cannot blame the president to fight for his survival.Thank you.

The standards are low because teachers have been doing a terrible job. Most of these teachers don't love their jobs anyways. Some only chose this path because they could not fulfil their goals and careers of their dreams. If is it an issue of parents paying for books and materials, it is the job of GNAT and NAGRAT to educate the parents so parents will understand what their responsibilities in the midst of capitation. I can assure GNAT and NAGRAT that private schooling has not done much to improve Ghana.

  Because of our poor maintenance culture some secondary schools are in a deplorable state. No student applies to some secondary schools while the secondary schools known for their academic achievements are overburdened with applications. The computer placement was supposed to solve this. The government must improve the state of infrastructure in schools and ensure that well paid teachers are available. WAEC must ensure that exams conducted are fair and free of leakages. We must not forget that a strong economy is necessary for a good educational system and a good educational system is needed for a strong economy. Our basic and secondary schools must inculcate a strong sense of patriotism and nationalism in our youth.

  Money does not grow on trees and this cash strapped administration must come clean and tell ghanaians how they plan to fund it .
  The idea was first mooted during the campaign of the disputed general elections of 2012 by Nana Akuffo Addo. This Administration was quick to point out its unsustainability and flaws. If they're doing a 180 today then the public deserves to know the reasons behind the sudden change of mind. The administration cannot pay the salaries of teachers, doctors, etc, so for now this seems to be a mere campaign gimmick. Ghana today is hell on earth and it appears they're just saying something to feel the void in economic activity and prosperity and in times like these anything goes.

  SK, right questions must be asked just as you have began. What is low level of education and what standardise assessment criteria are used? Can we just say educational level is low just because its free? What particular research have proven this suggestion? Are our teachers level of education which must also be low had major impact because here in UK one cannot teach even nursery level without first degree which is basic requisite for teaching? Also, I do not think is free because government is paying for it with taxpayers money. I deem it very much insane and lack of leadership for organisations like NAGRAT and GNAT to make absurd comments like these, other than proposing to government workable ideas to make dreams of poor children a reality they shamefully have betrayed their ignorance and backwardness to the world that they themselves do not worth to be teachers.
