The answer to your question is simply BAD leadership.
JJ is living fat on government, even though he has multiple private houses/toilets now; he harassed folks for having more than one toilet at home. Even simple furniture, he can’t buy himself, he is waiting on the government to furnish his house. Enough said about JJ the better.

As you all keep putting the blame on past leaders for the lack of development facing Ghana from Nkrumah, Acheampong, Afrifa, Rawlings, KU4, MIlls etc have you stopped for a second and asked yourself if there is any successfully managed black nation or society on earth?

All fully black dominated societies on earth are almost mismanaged and in chaos. And the problem is low IQ! Africans didnt fully evolve during the human evolutionary process thats why Africa remains the richest continent on the planet yet remains the poorest. Poverty in Africa is not the continent, its the ppl that live on it.

You see people, natural resouces does not develop a nation, human ingenuity and creavity is what it takes to change the natural environment. It takes an amount of creativity to turn nothing into something and this part of human ingenuity and creativity is heavily missing in the African. When it also comes to leadership we are at the bottom of it.

Ghana's own is even worse as our universities keep churning out chew and pour students that have no problem solving skills. How do you expect such a nation to deelop? It aint goint to happen people, we need to turn to the white man and learn as much as we can learn from them and hoepfully that will change things on the continent.

Other than the confusion and self destruction will continue. We weren ready when Nkrumah emotionally thought we were.

We're always looking at the government to make a change. What if we stop issuing bribes to get ahead one another and try to live in a society of liberty and justice for all? Ghana was already retrogressing under IK Acheampong. I'm an Akan and I lived on Kumasi when I.K Acheampong was gradually selling the country for profit. It didn't start with JJ Rawlings. It started with all of us. We all have to accept the blame for us to move to society of prosperity.

Rawlings and his revolutionary goons had no clue on nation building. In times of duress any action taken against your enemy- perceived and real, is deemed acceptable. Till today, majority of Ghanaians have not realized how wasteful and far back the Rawlings years set Ghana. If some are still calling for a Rawlings-like revolution to clean up the system, then I can only conclude that they are either mis/uninformed or simply clueless.
Rawlings worked for the government all his life, so the source of his income should be easily verifiable. He is leading a life way beyond his means- at least based on accumulated genuine income, yet he is quick to accuse others of corruption.

He did what professors do: interpret the world and/or provide insights that help to change society for the better; shift society towards excellence not mediocrity which you seem to glamorize. Standard of living in Ghana was a nightmare, the evil practice termed "kalabule" permeated every fabric of society; you were better off selling tomatoes in themarket than going to school. Teachers were fleeing the country for teaching posts even in Sierra Leone ( can you imagine that?)
Buy things improved in the mid 80s.
The ideals of the Revolution - rooting out
corruption were achieved temporarily.
Our greatest regret or is dismay, was that the so-called Goals/achievements were short-lived and corruption is worse now than before the Revolution.
The question on our lips therefore is
"Was it necessary at all?"
Have we achieved anything from the 2 Revolutions?
Opportunity which they claimed was denied them is now in their hands and they are basking in it.
Why should others Not accuse them of Discrimination and Bias?

well, prof, i share the same sentiments with you. democracy could limit African leaders to take some painful decisions but military could do same without much ado. the moral revolution should have been industrial revolution. kalabule graduated to 419 and then to sakawa. our relative development, i mean our development, relative to the west was negative as i also saw it during his time. well of course, you need to stagnate and when you refused to move forward, you move backwards - negative development.

The main important factor that helped those two nations was the unity of their citizenry. They were united behind their leaders against the foreign powers that sought their stagnation and retrogression. With such a united from they were able to develop their countries.
The opposite happened in Ghana under Rawlings, individuals Akosa and his cohorts instead of joining forces with Rawlings' government to build a beautiful Ghana, they allowed jealousy, envy, hatred,nepotism, tribalism and superiority complex to consume to such an extent that they rented themselves for a few dollars to foreign agents to be used to create discord in the country thereby making governance very difficult.They made sure the country RETROGRESSED and STAGNATED.

Kufuor, who is only second to Nkrumah in terms of performance, suffered his insults because he would not agree to feed the Rawlingses for life, and so did Atta Mills who would not give Rawlings and his family the funds they required to sustain their lavish lifestyle. Now he has a President who is willing to give and play ball, so his eyes are closed to the misery being unleashed on Ghanaians.

These comparisons of Ghana to Malaysia and Singapore are being done without the proper context.

While we have seen such comparisons with the base timeline set at the beginning of our Independence, these as done now by the Professor miss the the relevant factors by a large margin.

In fact, those done with the base line set at time of attaining Independence were much fairer than these by Professor Akosah.

However, both sets of comparisons were totally missing vital ingredients that rendered those comparisons inaccurate, unless for the ultimate symptoms of the causal factors.

In the case of the first set, we often heard of just the fiscal components and how they translated into infrastructural and Economic differences. But the Folks making those comparisons deliberately left out the political environment within which those fiscal and Economic measures operated.

The truth is that had Nkrumah not been undermined by the West and bogged down with vicious tug-of-war with the Opposition, Ghana could have fared much better. Even under his ill-advised dictatorship, had he been left to continue with the Economic Plans as they were and provided with the credit he asked from the West, he could have done much better to consolidate the foundation that future Enterprises would have fared very well on.

Singapore was under a similar dictatorial environment but the West kept supporting her and she had the stability to grow. And so did Malaysia's term of dictatorship not suffer much of Western sabotage and hectic internal distraction.

I know how those favoring Kotoka's coup would object to this fact. However, evidence largely overlooked to affirm that fact exists elsewhere, too. Right in our backyard, in the Ivory Coast. Houphouet was no democratic leader. But when he had as much stability to implement most of his programs, that Nation soared. Ghana still did enjoy a free market Economy even as Nkrumah was shouting out his Scientific Socialism. So, folks must not be deceived into thinking that any Socialist policy in Ghana caused us the lagging behind Singapore and Malaysia.

In the second set of comparisons by Professor Akosah, he left out the significant factor of what our Economic or Financial status was when Rawlings took over. Ghana's Economy was nowhere near in strength or growth rate as Singapore's or Malaysia's was at the time of their independence. Therefore using just the temporal spatial equivalence in years of incumbency as a determinant in these comparisons do not tell the true picture.

As an overall assessment, however, we all regret our lagging behind whatever the causes. But in any attempt to nail down the factors which caused our stagnation, we ought to be fair and bold to mention the external coercion that undermined all our efforts. In fact, the same political forces that hindered full implementation of Nkrumah's programs did come back to taunt Rawlings in his first part of reign. The West was very antagonistic to his regime until he showed concrete signs of adopting their suggestions for recognition and aid through the IMF/World Bank.

So, we have to understand that so long as the West decides to hinder our growth, we would never get it smooth-sailing to progress.

All the above, however, do not excuse any undemocratic behaviors of the CPP or the Rawlings' Regimes. The overwhelming factor in both cases has been Western support or lack thereof. Same with China upsurge.

We all love our first president.

And until one is able to dig deeper into the direction in which the country was steered in the days that immediately followed independence; one is bound to attribute the present problems to the wrong people, and the wrong reasons.

Unfortunately Prof Akosa is making this blunder.

The Prof was comparing the accomplishments of former President Rawlings with that of the presidents of Malaysia, and Singapore.

And he blames the stagnation of Ghana on the former President Rawlings.

This is coming from a man who champions the ideology of our beloved first president.

How ironic!

Perhaps Prof Akosa needs to be reminded that unlike former President Rawlings: the former presidents of Malaysia, and Singapore did not inherit a country which leader has wasted all her foreign reserves, and her goodwill on the unity of Asia.

Paradoxically Prof Akosa was making his pathetic statement in commemoration of Dr J.B. Danquah.

Did he stop to ask himself what would have been the plight of Ghana today if Dr. J.B. Danquah had been the first president of Ghana?

We would never know.

But at least we know that he would not have lived the dreams of foreigners like George Padmore, W.E.B. Dubois, and company in pursuit of pan-Africanism, -- thus blowing our precious foreign reserves.

I do not mean to point a disappointing finger at the reign, and accomplishments of the first leader of the Conventional Peoples Party,-- I have no party affliation.

All I'm saying is for us to guard against using our microphones or megaphones to miswrite history, and wrongly inflame the people with half-truths and wicked lies.

Granted, the information that Africa needs to correct its past mistakes and bring prosperity to its people are not in Africa. Instead they are in the libraries of U.K., USA, Netherlands, France, etc.

I strongly urge Mr. Akosa to travel and learn before projecting himself.

May Lord Almighty continue to bless our beloved Great Ghana:

I was making the point that Prof Akosa was wrong to scapegoat former President Rawlings for Ghana's anemic and mediocre socio-economic development.

Let me reiterate: the present woes of Ghana's socio-economic development must be properly traced back to our first president.

He was misled to waste all the foreign reserves, and the goodwill we inherited from the British on the dreams and agenda of foreigners, -- George Padmore, W.E.B. Dubois, and C.L.R. James -- in the name of pan-Africanism.

Can you point to a single economic benefit that we derived from all the money that our first president spent on the pan-African movement?

Akosombo Dam, Tema Motorway, and the factories that he built for the industrialization of our country's economy were financed with debt.

He engaged in those plans after he had wasted our precious foreign reserves on pan-Africanism.

Even the industrialization that he started failed because, he would not surround himself with masterminds.

Our first president was an economist. But he did not run the country like an economist. His mind was not on the country.

It's hard to imagine how any country can import machinery, raw materials, pay labour cost for the production of finished goods, and then turn around to import finished goods at the same time; without destroying its fiscal health.

That was exactly how our first president managed the economic affairs of our country.

He could have done better, had he not devoted all his time and our precious resource blindly to uniting Africa.

If Dr J.B. Danquah had been our first president: Do you think he would have ignored his countrymen who had the knowledge of how the country operated under the British, and then bring in foreigners who did not know anything about the country to advise him on how to run the country?

JJ may be "a man of high school education". But he had the wisdom to know that Ghana could not carry the whole Africa on her back.

Come to think of it; JJ is not the first person with a high school education to lead a country.

Have you ever heard of President Harry Truman of the United States?

Do you know his level of education?

With all due respect you don't have to be highly educated to lead a country.

You need the ability to surround yourself with masterminds, develop a vision for the country, communicate your vision to the masterminds, work with them to accomplish your vision, and motivate the people to believe in themselves and the country.

JJ successfully did that, -- even with his high school education.

That is why we have democratic rule in Ghana today. We must be grateful that we have viable and enviable democratic ideals, and institutions in Ghana today.

You don't need me to remind you that we owe it to the selflessness of JJ.

He is not a "book-long".

Beware of the "book-longs". It's not all of them who have anything to offer our beloved Great Ghana.

We need leaders with substance, and pragmatic vision to lead our country.

May Lord Almighty continue to bless our beloved Great Ghana:

At the time of Independence, Ghana's foreign reserves were the envy of any of the former colonies, -- both British and French -- in Africa.

How many months of imports can our foreign reserves cover today?

When did we start destroying the economic fabrics of our country?

Money does not grow on trees.

Economics is not an art. It's a science.

A government that understands this and, adheres to all the basic parameters and indicators will generate wealth for its people.

Right from the beginning of our independence we have treated our economy like a candle in the wind.

As a result, we have not been able to create wealth for our people.

We have therefore resigned ourselves to the belief that, this is how things have always been with our country.

Not so!

The destruction and the poverty started under our own local leaders.

To be more specific the destruction started under our first president.

He simply neglected the development of our country; until it was too late for him to bring prosperity to the people of Ghana.

We must face up to it. It is only then, that we can make sure that it never happens again.

If we fail to face up to it, we shall continue attributing it to the wrong reasons. This will not help us.

Countries such as Malaysia and Singapore which were ruled that long by their leaders transformed such societies into fully developed countries. The reverse is the case with the P(NDC) gov't. Ghana deserves better.
