Two laptops for $5,000 is possible depending on the make and quality. I bought a Sony laptop in February 2009 for £2,400 ($3,600). That excludes the Microsoft software that I had to put on it but it was of very high quality.

The committee should not dwell too much on the cost but the content or package of the computers. I suspect as researchers they needed something of high quality with specific packages to enable them do their work.

Of course, the questions about lack of receipts or receipts taking three years to be presented as well as the inconsistencies are suspicious and the two researchers must provide credible answers.

Some people have no idea what used to happen with these audits. It was just a formality. They gave gifts to MPs in exchange for their budgets getting easy approval.

Those instructed to investigate should be knowledgeable enough to know how the computer business works. People shouldn't be alarmed because of the prices quoted. As already informed, there're other PCs that could cost more than what UG bought theirs for. Just be findful about that!

I had posted an article about how Ghana has already lost a whooping $3bn due to the egregious royalty system governing its petroleum production but it hardly garnered a whimper! True, 99.9999% of the Ghanaweb adherents don't have clue about oil matters and could hardly comprehend the import of the article but one would have expected them to express the same pious and vacuous remarks to ginger the MPs to reject the new Petroleum Bill. They prefer trivial, mundane things to waste commenting on.

And now we are talking about researchers laptop computers, not the one being supplied by RIGS. Do you know the sitting allowance of those investigating the two computers? Based on the brand on laptop you want to buy, it can either be more or less than $2500. The brand, the specifications, the installed software, etc., all contribute to the final price of the laptop.

I have always gone with IBM (now lenovo) which I order from the IBM site directly. They don't come cheap but they last a lifetime. The one i am currently using is about 10 yrs old and still going strong.
So one needs to be careful. This is not to say that these two guys are not crooks and shouldn't be questioned.
My big question though is this:
Should parliament be wasting precious time on this?
Is this an attempt to let the public lose focus on more pressing issues?

In the early '90s, some of the softwares the Univ. was installing for students to use were costing up to £20000! later in the '90s, Chinese were returning from China and selling them to students for only NKr100, hardly £10 then!

What should have occupied us whether those researchers left the laptops in the dept. or took them away.

Any serious institution will have a routine for purchasing gadgets or similar items when the cost is more than US$500 or US$1000. Secondly three or more price quotations from different companies or shops should be a must.

If some of us think US$5000 is nothing then do not expect Ghana to be financially ok. If there are no proper routines for such amounts, what about purchases or procurement that are in hundreds of thousands of £ or $ or Euro.
Keeping blaming governments when we do not want to play our part.
