What is this guy talking about? He might have not read history very well. Is unfortunate that, such people like this missed to read the real history of Ghana. J B Dankuah is a terrorist and did more than what Bin Larden did. Simply because, they he used all what terrorist use to destabilized a nation or people. He killed Ghanaians with bomb, he killed with gun, he killed with everything available back then. And what else do you want him to be? Look at it today, his seedins are in the Ghana politics playing the same game that Danquah did. But this time in a different form of corruption and Cocaine dealings, while at the same time damaging the brain of our future leaders with drugs. Very soon if they lose election or two or three elections, they will be too frustrated that, they will start using bombs for power, if possible get their hands on atomic bombs or chemical gasses against Ghanaians. I know Ghanaians will try to keep them out of power forever and ever. So, J B Danquah did not contribute positive to Ghana other than terrorism and production of bad seeds that are in the political arena today.

While preaching total emancipation of Africa, Nkrumah was systematically killing all opponents in Nsawam Prison. Nkrumah made himself a messiah, President for life without a Vice President and declared Ghana a one-party state because he was a murderous dictator

Exactly what came to my mind when I read that errant nonsense coming from this boy Quashigah! Yes, he should think and talk about the many unwholesome deaths that occurred under their party's founder first, most innocent persons who were not accused of masterminding throwing bombs and trying to overthrow the PNDC. What sort of bloody nonsense is this?
What does he know about how JB died? Was he shot dead while escaping from prison, or hanged for his alleged offences to warrant comparing his death to that of a criminal? In fact, even criminals should not die in prison due to very poor prison conditions, as is still the case now! Being sentenced to prison is not a death sentence, so this by heart talking is not sensible at all!

As if making the country ungovernable wasn't enough, Danquah resorted to treason, bomb throwing, terrorism, vigilantism etc, after losing every election as candidate of his own akyem abuakwa constituency, not mention his own village. Nkrumah an Nzema stood as a candidate for Accra central and won from jail.

Listen up, there were very many parents during the epoch of Dictator Kwame Nkrumah who were thrown into prison simply because Nkrumah's Young Pioneer Movements had reported them to the Authorities just for simply "mentioning the name " of the DICTATOR.
This was the price the then opposition had to pay for the Detention without Trial under that wicked Regime of Dictator Kwame Nkrumah.
At least it is always the Court of Law that has the prerogative proving Legality of Acts. Therefore in denying the Rights of that individual to have his/her case determined by the Courts, you have NOT proven any crime against that person.
I lived through the Dictator's Regime and NEVER heard of any Opposition member who had been arraigned before the Courts for any crime committed.

I wrote this in response to Kobina Arthur Kennedy's article of today. It is more than relevant here too. I've edited it.
--------
've heard it before and responded to it all before but we cannot stop responding to their feel good stories devoid of facts and reality on the ground.
1ST, I saw the headline on Prof. Akosa and the PDA but did not read the article, so cannot say he was wrong or right in what he said. But the PDA was a justifiable piece of legislation which many so-called democratic countries had then and now. Britain has it and it was used extensively in N. Ireland. Ghana's was based on that of India. The Patriot Act of the US is a recent example of a PDA.
My good friends Dr M. Gyamerah and Ekow Nelson had authored a fine piece of defence of the PDA, a piece I had the privilege of editing for them.
That the PDA was abused by some people trying to settle local scores leading to many innocent people being imprisoned is not in dispute. You have a land dispute with someone, all you have to do was simply turn an informant and accused him or her of offences under the PDA. That was how the maternal side of my family turned out to have supplied more inmates to Nsawam than any other family in Ghana! Their alleged crime? Allegedly collecting money from Olympio in order to forment secession of the VR. Of course, it was all false but no sensible govt can fail to respond to such accusations, considering the person making the claims.
Incidentally and unfortunately, the informant happened to be from my paternal side. He was an intelligent, indomitable, shaker and mover whom someone in the family said of him: had he gone to school, he'd had sold us all! Yes, he didn't go to school but he spoke pidgin English and French and many West African languages, including Hausa, fluently, having worked with white merchants during the colonial era! Anyway, he himself eventually got locked up in Nsawan and only came out after the coup, but the man reportedly visited Nkrumah in Conakry! When I read a couple of years ago that he was the main architect behind the removal of Dr Fiagbe as VR Secretary during the PNDC time, linking him to same secessionist plots, I burst into laughter! His exploits! He was someone if you had him on your side, you could sleep soundly! If against you, woe betides you!
My father tried as much as possible to get as many as possible sent to Nsawam released before the coup. I recollect as a teen how pissed those who came out after the coup were. The Djabanor Committee that investigated the disturbances in Anloga after the abortive coup that led to the death of Kotoka in April 1967 was right in its findings about those detentions which exonerated the Nkrumah and the CPP but there is a lot more some of us knew and which are not found in those reports, and in the public domain. I have no doubt the C'ttee set up by the NLC to investigate detentions under the PDA would have reached similar detentions. It is a pity such C'ttee works and the knowl. of informed persons do not form part of the discourse on PDA. Someone needs to write a book or an academic article on this subject, as people still continue to use the coercive
forces of the state to settle local disputes, intervene in chieftaincy disputes, etc., thereby creating a state of lawlessness and normlessness in Ghana.
Anyway, is it not ironical that the NLC Decree which replaced the PDA put more people into preventive detention and sent more people into exile than the CPP's PDA for the mere reason of belonging to the CPP??? Yes, so they released a few hundreds and many hardened criminals in order to boost the number and put into prison double that number! Some democrats!
BTW, it was just most appropriate that Azikiwe said something in favour of JB. After all, JB gave him his first break as a political activist upon his return from American and settling in Ghana. He edited JB's paper, a position which led to his and Wallace Johnson's deportation for authoring the article: "Has the African a God?", considered by the colonial authorities as seditious.

Andy, I am at a loss as to what you are trying to say.
The point under discussion is whether it was right for Nkrumah to use the PDA as a tool to deal with "perceived" problems. If you were a teenager when Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966, then I deduce that you would be, at least, 61 years old now. I would, thus, expect that you would have something substantive and substantial to say about this unfortunate period in our history. Unfortunately, I can't seem to tease out the thesis of your long piece.
I like Nkrumah; however, I will be the first to admit that he used the PDA to settle personal scores. Danquah and co, were obstacles in his desire to become the only "voice" in the country. It will, thus, be unfortunate for anybody in our current dispensation to give legitimacy to the PDA. Who said it is "cool" to take away a person's most precious possession--liberty, without going through due process of law. That Prof. Akosa, or anybody, would suggest that it was right for Nkrumah to use the PDA the way he did, is the most unfortunate piece of nonsense to disturb my ears.

First, remember that the PDA was an act of Parliament. It wasn't an executive decree. It doesn't matter whether the CPP constitutes majority in parliament. Second, you must consider the series of events that led to the Act. It was not born out of nowhere. Now if you're aware of all of these events, the question is are you expecting the new country to be thrown into turmoil at its very onset or do you expect the new leader to die because people want to be leaders of Ghana by any means possible irrespective of the cost as it happened in the Congo? What evidence do you have to suggest that Nkrumah's intention of the PDA was to silence his competitors in the political arena to become the only political voice of the country? You admire Danquah; I know. At the same time, let us also examine the conduct of Danquah and the likes: their attitude, actions and rhetoric towards the government and Nkrumah in particular that made them even suspects of the unwarranted events taking place in the new born country. Remember also that Nkrumah was only the leader of the Government but not the government and whatever decision taken was based on state intelligence and not from the advice of wife and friends.

You are a hypocrite indeed. We blame the leadership of John Mahama, the president, for current hardships because he is head of the party in power, the NDC. So it is that the leadership of the party which incites its members to violence and acts of terrorism is responsible and deserved to go to jail.
The NPP according to their own manifesto purports to adhere to multi-party property owning free market principles as practiced in the UK and or the USA. Guess what? In the USA or UK they hold people and or groups hell bent on terrorism in prisons or detentions indefinitely, how about that? For as long as in Ghana we make right what is morally wrong because of party loyalty or tribal allegiance we will remain underdeveloped and incapable of moving away from retribution.
There are NPP zealots who cherish the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah and his CPP so it is there will always be those who will justify the detention of Danquah with reason. For those of us who would pretend the UGCC had better ideas.than the CPP or vice versa the struggle continues as we see between the NDC and NPP but we cannot bring ourselves to admit we've been had by both parties. Have you ever stopped for a minute to think why we have had so many with university degrees in our parliament since 1966 and yet little to show for the money wasted irrespective of the party in power? Nations rise and or go into decline because there are simply leaders who lack foresight and or ideas and ideals. Some have foresight and ideas like Nkrumah others talk about ideas but when given the chance fail because they never had it but talked the good talk like Busia did in office.

Don't be stupid, Nkrumah was a tyrant who wouldn't let no one talk or criticize him. What was the Ghana young pioneer movement for? Was that for the opposition? how many of the opposition members had their kids in the young pioneer ? It was mainly cpp functionaries , mps, ministers and government officials who had their relatives in that movement, but everyone was asked to report anyone who spoke ill about Nkrumah whether cpp or not what are you talking about? Your relations in the cpp who were lying to Nkrumah are the same blood who are lying to ndc and advised ndc to form that propaganda machinery, shut up.You people think we don't know your history of lying ? My parents were staunch cpp members but were scared about their own kids because of the young pioneer movement.Kids were adviced to report their own parents and made kids to believe in him than God, they said Nkrumah was the messiah, Nkrumah never die and the propagandists made their opponents look like they were monsters just like ndc is doing and most especially to Nana Addo like they did to his grandfather, uncle and his father because Kwesi Pratt and co had their fathers as propaganda machines who were used to destroy others and that is what their blood relations are doing now to destroy this country because of hatred and their stomachs.Dangerous people.

But he did and presently, more of such Danquah's and others continue to die, continue to be killed, continue to be beaten up, continue to be maimed, continue to be injured, continue to be cowered into submission, by the brute force and barrel of the gun, effectively creating a new form of PDA, "imprisonment of the conscience" by the NDC gov't led by John Mahama, for stepping up and speaking and demonstrating against official inaction and inertia, in addressing their developmental challenges.
And whilst they are exercising the modern form of imperialism against their own, the stealing, looting, thievery, and plundering continues unabated with the country sinking further and further into the abyss.
As Ghanaians, we would need to make choices moving forward as a people and 2016 presents the opportunity to choose a team, that would address our socio-economic development challenges and aspirations without the brutalization and violence which has been unleashed on the masses by the NDC gov't led by John Mahama.

A short list of Danquah-Busia terrorism. (Courtesy Kwabena Bomfeh, Ghanaweb, 24 November 2006).
1. 1956, the CPP was outlawed (illegally) in Asante and Abuakwa headed by the Asantehene and Okyehene respectively. Women including the sister of Krobo Edusei were slaughtered for being members of the CPP.
2. In 1958, there was a plot to assassinate Nkrumah at the airport and then overthrow the CPP government as Nkrumah was about to leave for a state visit to India. The plot was discovered and the plotters were arrested (Forward Ever, 1977).
3. On July 7, 1961, two bombs exploded in Accra, one wrecking Nkrumah’s statue in front of the Parliament House (McFarland & Owusu-Ansah).
4. In September 1961, there was a conspiracy among the senior Ghanaian military officers, but the plot collapsed because of the death of the chief conspirator Brigadier General Joseph E. Michel in an airplane crash (Mahoney, 1983).
5. On August 1, 1962, as Nkrumah was returning from a state visit to Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), and had gotten out of his car to speak to the school children in the crowd that had gathered to greet him at Kulungungu, a bomb contained in a bouquet carried to him by a schoolgirl, exploded; it killed several school children and injured many others. The victim’s bodies bled from cuts caused by the splinters from the bomb (Kanu 1982; Tetteh, 1999). Nkrumah sustained a serious injury but he refused to have any device to deaden his pain while the operation went on.
6. On September 9, 1962, another bomb exploded near the Flagstaff House, where the Ghana Young Pioneers Orchestra Band was entertaining the audience to modern Ghanaian Music. The explosion killed one person and injured many others (Tetteh).
7. On September 18, 1962, two bombs exploded in Accra killing and injuring many people. One of these bomb blasts occurred in Lucas House in Accra, where nine children fell dead on the spot with their intestines gushed out of their bodies (Tetteh).
8. On September 20, 1962, two bombs exploded in Accra, killing and injuring several people (McFarland & Owusu-Ansah).
9. On September 22, 1962, there was another bomb explosion in Accra (McFarland & Owusu-Ansah; Tetteh).
10. On January 11, 1963, another bomb exploded at a CPP rally at the Accra Sports Stadium shortly after Nkrumah had left the scene. This explosion killed over twenty people and more than four hundred people were injured; among the victims were children of the Young Pioneer movement (McFarland & Owusu-Ansah).
11. January 1, 1964, a police officer, Seth Ametewe, was posted on guard duty at the Flagstaff House to assassinate Nkrumah. His five shots missed Nkrumah, but succeeded in killing his personal security officer, Sgt. Salifu Dagarti.

We are compiling and will soon publish the names of all the victims of Danquah-Busia terrorism in Ghana. We will also commission a commemorative plaque to remember the schoolchildren who lost their lives in the bomb explosion against the Osagyefo at Kulungugu on August 11th, 1962.
Madam Elizabeth Asantewaa was one of the young schoolchildren designated to greet the Osagyefo, when the powerful bomb callously-hidden in a bouquet of flowers being presented by a schoolgirl went off. Eleven (11) innocent schoolchildren lost their lives that day of infamy. Madam Asantewaa was lucky to have survived but lost a leg. She has received absolutely no state support since the coup against Nkrumah in 1966. The parliament of Ghana concerns itself with the death in prison of the terrorist plotter, Danquah. The case of the victims of Danquah-Busia terrorism is never brought up in parliament. Both NDC and NPP have kept the incidence of Danquah-Busia terrorism hidden from view. They mourn the death of the terrorist instead!

Attempts to overthrow the Nkrumah and assassinate him.
In 1961 the C.P.P government introduced an austerity budget to counter declining world price of cocoa while maintaining planned capital expenditure on economic expansion and industrialisation, including Tema Harbour and the new township, new industries such as the steelworks, new housing, and new schools, among others. In response to increases in duty on consumer goods and the introduction of a compulsory saving scheme to quell rising inflation, the railways workers organized a strike to register their opposition to the austerity measures in the budget.
Nkrumah was out of the country at the time and a delegation of the cabinet sought a meeting with representatives of the Unions but the leaders of the strike refused to meet and the government declared a state of emergency in response to what was an illegal strike under the 1958 Industrial Relations Act. After this, many workers returned to work except in Sekondi -Takoradi and surrounding areas.
As time wore on, it became clear that the union leadership had been infiltrated and come under the influence of the opposition United Party. Two leading members of the strike - Ishmaila Annan and Atta Bordoh - were executive members of the United Party in the Western region. Ishmaila Annan had been a member of the Moslem Association Party (before it became part of the UP) and was closely associated with the deported Amadu Baba who orchestrated much of the N.L.M.’s violence in the run up to independence.
A week after the strike was declared the executive of the opposition United Party met in Dr. J.B. Danquah’s House in Accra. Present at the meeting were the strike leaders, Ishmaila Annan and Atta Bordoh ostensibly in their capacity as party executives and not as trade unionists or strike organisers. However, as Dr. J.B. Danquah was later to confirm, the central issue for discussion at the meeting was the railway strike and the 1961-1962 budget.
At the end of the meeting, the United Party executives issued a press statement calling on the government to recall parliament and revise the budget or resign. In public, however, the opposition did not condemn the illegal strike but criticized the government for failing to control it.
A week after the executive meeting of the United Party, Dr. J.B. Danquah travelled to Sekondi to meet with the strike leaders in Kwesi Lamptey’s house in Fijai Secondary School. Those present included members of the United Party executive, and far from seeking to resolve the dispute, the meeting discussed how to steel the nerves of the striking workers and to persuade them to continue with the dispute and not to respond to Nkrumah’s overtures such as ending state of emergency and releasing persons arrested, after he had returned from his trip
It later transpired that members of the opposition helped drafted and paid for telegrams on behalf of the unions (using fictional unions names and a private mail bag addresses belonging to the Ishmaili Annan) to International Railway and Maritime workers unions in Nigeria, U.S and UK requesting funds to ensure the “survival of parliamentary democracy “ in Ghana. The strike was no longer about workers’ grievances against the 1961 budget, but the survival of parliamentary democracy in Ghana. It became clear that not only were the UP financing the strike, they were involved in the design of an illegal activity that soon took on a politically subversive character.
Dr. K.A. Busia , who was in self-imposed exile moved to Lome to provide proximate support to the strikers and other subversives, and was joined by number of opposition leaders including Obetsebi Lamptey and Ekow Richardson. Dr. Busia disclosed he had been offered £50,000 to fight the democratically elected government of his country.
The government also discovered that among the plans of the Lome group was a series of bomb explosions to be launched from neighbouring Togo on national monuments and at the residences of prominent ministers orchestrated by the personal assistant to K.A. Gbedemah (who had by now become estranged from the C.P.P. administration) Victor Yaw de Grant Bempong.
It became clear that as in 1954, when a defeated opposition took advantage of the grievances of farmers to re-launch itself on the political stage, having lost the 1960 elections, they were once gain taking advantage of the genuine grievances of working people about an austere budget to bring down the elected government of Ghana. This time the colonial government was not around to indulge them and thee C.P.P took decisive action and leading members of opposition politicians were including Dr. Danquah and Joe Appiah were arrested under prevention detention for the first time in the three years since the Act’s introduction.
The violence did not, however, end there: numerous attempts were made on Nkrumah’s life in the years following the introduction of the PDA, including the infamous Kulungugu bomb outrage, the bomb outrages in late 1961 that preceded the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1962, and the repeated assassination attempts on Nkrumah throughout the early 1960s and especially in 1962 and 1964. By the fifth assassination attempt on Nkrumah’s life, a death toll of 30 Ghanaians, men, women and children, had been recorded with the wounding of some 300 others.

THE USA PATRIOT ACT ALLOWS THE US GOVERNMENT TO DETAIN ANY ONE MERELY SUSPECTED AS A THREATH TO AMERICA FOR UNLIMITED TIME PERIOD WITHOUT TRIAL, EVEN IF SUCH SUSPICION HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN, WHICH MAKES THIS A FLAW.
IN THE CASE OF JB DANQUAH, THIS DANQUAH MAN EVIDENTLY REFUSED TO HEED TO GOVERNMENT WARNINGS AND CONTINUED TO UNDERMINE NKRUMAH'S GOVERNMENT. IT WAS REPORTED THAT JB DANQUAH ATTEMPTED TO SABOTAGE THE CONSTRUCTION OF AKOSOMBO DAM, THE TEMA HABOR, AND THE TEMA MOTORWAY, AMONG OTHERS. JB DANQUAH WILL LOBBY AGAINST NKRUMAH ABROAD AND TRY TO DISCOURAGE NKRUMAH'S ALLIES FROM HELPING NKRUMAH TO DEVELOP GHANA. CONSEQUENTLY, JB DANQUAH WAS ARRESTED AND THREW INTO NSAWAM PRISON TO BE FED WITH GARI AND SALT.
I AGREE THAT JB AT A POINT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN A REDUCED SENTENSE BY BEING PLACED UNDER A HOUSE ARREST,OR BY AN ENTIRE AMNESTY OR PARDON, ESPECIALLY ON HEALTH GROUNDS.
BUT WE MUST KNOW THAT JUDGING FROM THE NATURE OF HIS CRIME, JB WOULD HAVE RECEIVED A LIFE SENTENCE IF HE WAS AN AMERICAN AND COMMITTED THE SAME KIND OF CRIME IN THE USA.
IN CONCLUSION, I THINK THAT JB SHOULD HAVE RATHER SERVED HIS TIME UNDER HOUSE ARREST IF AND ONLY IF HE AGREED TO DESIST FROM ATTEMPTS TO SABOTAGE GHANA UNDER NKRUMAH'S LEADERSHIP.
WE GHANAIANS LOVE JB, BUT HIS CRIMES UNDER NKRUMAH IS WHAT WE HAD ISSUES WITH. JB COULD HAVE BEEN SHOT UNDER IDI AMIN REGIME IN UGANDA FOR HIS CRIME AGAINST THE STATE!
MAHAMA'S BOGUS AND CLUELESS GOVERNMENT AND THEIR BOGUS INCOMPETENT PARLIAMENT CAN GO AHEAD AND PARDON JB IF THEY WISH TO DO SO, SINCE THEY ARE SIMPLY CONFUSED AND DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING IN THAT PARLIAMENT THERE.
