The Catholic church is one of the pioneers of education in Ghana and for their contribution to be obliterated by a latter-day 'pastor' is unpardonable.

If you give these schools back to these foreign religious organizations, our children risk being indoctrinated with decadent foreign principles such as pedophilia, homosexuality and other weird and vulgar alien cultural habits.
Just last week, the head of the Anglican Church wrote to its local clergy here in Ghana instructing them that they should tolerate and defend homosexuality. As for the Catholic Church anybody who has been following world news over the years should be familiar with the fact that it is a bastion of orgiastic pedophilia. For those who dont understand what that means, it means that certified child molesters who are homosexual inclined will be posted to Catholic run Ghanaian boarding schools to teach our children. Now what do you think will happen in such a volatile situation? Well your guess is as good as mine.
As for you Sarpong, your slave-like imperialist understanding of govt disqualifies you from being taken serious on a serious issue such as this.
If in a socially under-developed country such as Ghana that has systematically been impoverished by several hundred years of slavery, then colonialism, who will supervise the welfare of the roughly 80% of the vulnerable population outside the urban areas who are so poor that they do not as much as have the most basic necessities of life, much more potable water, food, clothes, medical care and education? And you think govt must relinquish more of its responsibilities to the private sector? You are a damn fool if you truly think so. You must be one of those wretched star-crossed converts of the World Bank or the IMF.
The rising costs of basic utility services of even state run institutions scare away many deprived users even in Accra. Are you aware that most inhabitants of Accra do not have access to medical care, electricity, water and schools because they cannot afford it? Are you aware that over 70% of Ghanaians do not have access to common domestic toilets?
Now even if it made any viable or moral sense for govt to abandon more of its its functions to the private sector, how many Ghanaian businessmen have the capital, ability and the expertise to take over those sectors of the economy?
Because of people like you, we have ended up living in a country in which nothing of any significance belongs to the state or its citizens anymore. The choice, juicy and strategic parts of the Ghanaian economy all belong to private foreign interests.
Now Mr Imperial Sarpong do you know what this means? No! I dont think you are smart enough to understand the implication of what this means. For your benefit, what this means is that foreigners will discreetly control this country of ours and determine how it should be governed. Just last week foreign companies impudently told our President and govt in the face that they will not honour the wind-fall tax law of Ghana. And what happened? For reasons best known to themselves our President and govt meekly backed down from putting that law into force. More of this will inevitably happen in the near future until Ghanaians will be reduced and relegated to the class of hewers of wood and drawers of water in our own country. Perhaps that is what you want to happen.
Common-sense should tell us all that if govt lets go of more of its areas of supervision, it is only foreign entities that have the capacity and the ability to take them over. Even then, the private sector operators who understandably are not welfare or charitable organizations, will only go for the more comfortable and profitable areas of the economy, leaving areas like the North where presently there are parts where one single medical doctor serves over 50,000 people.

Hi Gye Nyame
This is a very good idea. Returning Ghanaian schools will ensure discipline, instill moral values to our kids and the standard of education will be higher than what we have now. The parliamentarians may not see this as important due to the fact that most of them educate their kids overseas. They ensure that their kids get excellent education so that when they get their almighty degrees, they will become the future ministers and as well via for presidency in Ghana. Imagine what Rawlings paid to educate his kids overseas. Why do you think that he paid that hefty amount of money to educate his kids overseas? With the missionary schools back in Ghana, the poor kids who are academically good can get scholarships in the schools and in the end a bright poor child can get the chance to complete his/her education and become a great person who can contribute to the betterment of mother Ghana and the rate of drop outs will decline. We will have citizens with Christian values who dignify Ghanaians but not people like JJ Rawlings who stage coups all because he could not make end meet as a result of poor salary. Come back mission schools, come back to do the Job.

Can Opuni-Frimpong be for real? What Century does he live in? He must better understand that the Christian Council cannot import the hypocritical " holier than thou" assault on Public Schools by the far right Christian South of the USA to Ghana.
The existence of Private religious Schools can only be accommodated if they live side-by-side with the secular Public Schools. Surely, the Religious Schools present a certain level of competition for the Public Schools but no empirical evidence can be offered to render Public Schools an endemic failure.
If the resources required can be honestly used to educate the Students, all kids would have the opportunity to have quality Education. Most of our Educational personnel were, and are still, deeply involved with the churches to be morally responsible to run Public Schools well.
Yet, these Officials who would be otherwise working in the Religious Schools are the same that mismanage the Educational System.
The Christian Council must rather take their Congregations to task in getting the to exhibit the needed piety anywhere they are called upon to perform. I suspect that it is the lure to channel as much money into their Churches that is the principal motive in this call to give all our Schools to the Churches.
People do not want the Churches to control their lives anymore, let alone restrict their choices of where to be Educated.
Nobody is stopping the Churches from building the best Schools ever. But they could do so on their own with the necessary help from the Government. It is absolutely unthinkable to hand over all Public Schools to the Churches. What about those who do not want to be inculcated into the Religion of the only existing Religiuos School in their areas?
I am a Christian but this notion that only religious Schools can produce the best students is balderdash.
Let the Churches do more work to establish in their Congregations a solid set of moral principles and the Public Schools would be in good hands for all. That is the only way to have Politicians who are incorruptible to disburse our Efucational Funds appropriately. Teachers would be paid well and motivated to teach well.
Long Live Ghana!!!

You said it will be the same people running the government schools that will run the mission schools so you don't see what difference it will make. You are definitely very wrong. Even if the Churches leave the same Teachers and Headmasters at these schools, there will be discipline and good monitoring system introduced.
Do you know Ghana Telecom was losing close to $200 million every year before it was sold to vodafone holding 75% of GT now? GT(Vodafone) is now a profitable company saving the government almost $200 million it was budgeting to run GT.
Giving the mission schools back to the churches will reduce the government expenses on education and helping the government to balance its budget.

Right now, no law prohibits the Mission Schools from establishing their own Schools. If the Christian Council has the resources to do so, let it do that without taking over what the Government controls.
The idea that Public Schools cannot excel is ludicrous. The main reasons why most Missionary Schools do well are:
1). The small sizes of their classes that allow Teachers to have much closer interactions with Students to help them solve their problems.
2). The assurance that Salaries and other needs of the Schools would be always available bring the best out of the Educators.
Discipline that you suggest hinges on how we make applicable Laws work. Whether those Laws are religiously inspired or are driven by fear of inevitable legal penalties does not matter much. Gone are the days when Students could be spanked till their skin peeled off for not memorizing stuff, including verses in the Bible. If that kind of discipline is what is you are talking about, it can only go a little distance to get the Students study harder.
But the bulk of our Educational problems have to do with the delivery not the assimilation by the Students. Students could be ready to absorb the lessons but if the Teachers are not doing their best, the outcomes would not be pretty.
Remember that even in the olden days people craved for access to the few so-called Government Schools. That was because those Schools had some of the best performing Teachers who were motivated with Government incentives.
We now place Teachers everywhere as a way to provide jobs for graduating Teachers without much of any supervision that they are doing their work well. If we could find the Funds to boost regular Teacher inspections and evaluations as done in the 60s, along with good pay and bonuses to Teachers for persistently great performances, we would have the public Schools do as well as the Mission Schools.
We should not also forget the political ramifications of letting Christian Missions take back most of the Schools. How about the Moslems? And others who do not want to be controlled by any particular Church? Many of the current denominations like the Penticostal Missions do not run Schools. Are we going to allot them some Government Schools, too?
If it is only the Schools that used to be run by the Missions that the Rev. was referring to, note that those are now too few to admit enough of our Students. I think the Rev meant the wholesale transfer of all Government Schools to the Missions. The few Schools that the Missions had, if reverted to them, cannot make any significant impact on the entire Student population of today.
Public Schools must stay but we need stronger commitment, more Funds and new and more aggressive inspectorate for the Schools. The greater commitment by our Educators and more Funds to provide relevant School materials and lucrative service rewards for the Educators would go a long way to improve our Education. Use of modern Educational infrastructure, including Technology which the Teachers could all be trained to use well, too, all need money.
Proper modern School Buildings equipped with everything from Labs to Cafeteria and Gyms would inspire the Students to stay in and like School and do better in class.
Imagine what Woyome's loot alone could provide to modernize the Schools! It could provide better salaries to many despairing Teachers, if nothing at all. Or, modernize a few existing Schools to start.
But for time and space, please, allow me to end here, for now. Keep your opinions coming.
Long Live Ghana!!!

The plead did not place the emphasis on private versus Public Education. It asked that the Schools be handed over to The Churches who used to run them.
Meanwhile, are you resigning into the belief that Ghana as a Nation cannot ever have a competent Government that can well manage our Schools? If the Government had stayed out of our Education and left it all to the Missions and Private profit-making Enterprises most Ghanaians would never have had Education. Period! Most of us did not have the means to even pay for fees at the Elementary level. Besides who would have controlled the philosophical direction of our Nation?
Our Education must not be viewed solely within the context of mere Academic laurels but our ability to think critically and aspire to improve ourselves and the Nation. Building self-confidence in who we are leads us to greater self-worth that translates into spiral achievements. I seriously doubt that "Dark Continent" mentality that largely restricted the Missionaries and early foreign businesses to truly partner with us could have made us any better educated.
So, Government has a large role to play in our Education. It is only that we have let corruption eat into our commitment to provide the best gif our kids that we are even discussing the issue here. Therefore, I suggest the Churches use their moral power to challenge their members that enter into Government jobs to do the right things, including our Law-makers and Judiciary to enforce the Laws of the Land.
So long as we get away with ineptitude and corruption, not Private schools can solely save our Education.
Some rigorous basic standards must be agreed upon for delivery of Education in all forms. Most people cannot afford Private Schools in Ghana.

This Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong is as dunce as they come with some of Ghana's educated elite class. As a member of Ghana's elite class I would have expected some common sense and or logical thinking processes and proclamations from him. For starters, we are in a financial mess in Ghana because of several reasons. The critical attribute to our mess is and continues to be the moral bankruptcy of our political and educated class and the intellectual dishonesty brought on by loyalties to tribe and political party over nation.
Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong knows good and darn well there are men and women in Ghana with riches not earned through hard work but by way of political thievery and mismanagement. Yet the people in the NPP and NDC while they publicly bicker to deceive most of Ghana's population of voter age that they are better equipped to manage the nation’s affairs only look to the opportunity to have their hands on Ghana's coffers. If the government of Ghana that has been led by either the NDC (mostly) and the NPP had engaged in government that ever sought to improve the lives of Ghanaians our school would be the first to benefit. After all, majority of members of Ghana's parliament, Ghana's judiciary and at the executive office obtained their advanced degrees outside Ghana where they were privy to school building structures and school operations in those civilized nations that are well suited for humans and for learning. Do the thieves that masquerade as members of parliament, of the judiciary and or out of our executive offices not attend churches in Ghana where they are treated as royalty for their contribution? Why do the Roman Catholic excommunicate members especially women over divorce, adultery, abortions etc and yet all you men of “God” in Ghana sit idly by as political elite members of your churches steal and partake in your house worships? Ghana's churches do not have a record of truth and or effective management than the national government in fact you have become enablers and mouth piece for those tribal political parties of your preferences.
The facts are while government officials steal us blind because of our stupidity for voting them into office come election time the churches have cynically used God's name in vain as they enforce biblical verses on contributions and live as kings over paupers as congregation. The Rev. Dr. Opuni-frimpong and all the other reverends with doctorate degrees from God knows where did not go into preaching because they preferred self sacrifices for Ghana's poor to make lives better but because they get to collect money without tax and or without public scrutiny that enables them to enjoy lifestyles that has been taboo to be questioned. As Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong knows at the time of Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples the son of God did not get to ride healthier, well fed and groomed donkeys over those of his disciples; in fact Jesus was poorer in wealth than most of his disciples. Our culture has allowed reverend ministers to get away with abuses because of the fear of God’s presumed wrath and retribution upon congregants who dare expose church leaders and yet the very men of God continue to justify their life styles amidst the suffering lot or their own flock. I would rather see corrupt governments run our schools than see corrupt, hypocritical and morally bankrupt men of "God" collect all the marbles in the name of God as they lead their respective congregation as the pied piper did to their death.

Return schools to the various well organised churches but if the Christian council were to be well run better than this could be the result of the poor state of our academic standard in the state run schools where the grammar and the English is very rotten together with the moral standard.

For Christ sake, it shouldn't be an either or situation - government/public versus church/mission schools. We should have the option to choose the schools we want to send our children to. Private, parochial or public. It is time we look into charter schools - where a group of highly motivated teachers get together with parents to start their own schools with the knowledge of the educational authorities, making sure that the core requirements are covered.
There are other bodies/associations that are itching to provide quality education to our young people. A group of educationalists, for example, forming charter schools to cater for all kinds of academies - marine academy, agricultural academy, digital academy, space academy, etc. PTA's forming partnerships with interested and motivated teachers to start neighbourhood schools. And parents who want to send their children to either government schools or mission schools have the option to choose the school they want to send their children to.
I wouldn't want send my children to church schools now because their mission now, unfortunately, has become 'money-making'.

Return the Schools and the hospitals to the organised Churches to manage with grants from the Government.
Government should not run business like the Schools and the hospitals but focus on running the government.
Many good schools overseas are run by churches or in private management with good academic performance.
State schools in the UK perform badly against private schools, most of them are church schools.
State Ministers of education have no skill or training in managing schools or business.
The state in Ghana failed to provide discipline needed by students and parents. Without discipline in the schools, education standards suffer.
Parents are happy to contribute towards the education of their wards in a good school and reluctant to do so in a bad state school. Parents regard contribution towards their wards' education in a well-managed school as investment.
That explains existence of private schools worldwide; they meet expectations of students and parents.
The students have no problem in getting employed with the best salary.
I am speaking from experience with my four boys and girl.
So return the Schools to the Churches and they will help to deliver us from evil.

You are absolutely correct about that. The churches will do much better. But the governemt must infuse cash to them to transition to them to help reorganize its structures.
