Rwanda has banned the importation of plastic bags and all forms of plastics which choke the enviroment. When will the governement of Ghana enact such a law? It takes political will and resolve to get ahead. Talking without acting is just hot air. We need politicians with backbone not whiners and cluesless leaders who run to the church or moschee for divine intervention when they are at their wit ends. Politicis and religion does not mix.
Jesus, who christians follow made a clear distinction between religion and politics.
Mark 12:17 Jesus said to them, “Give what is Caesar's to Caesar and what is God's to God.” And they marveled at him.
So can anybody tell me why our charlatan politicians and pastors are mixing religion and politics? They are all fake and thieves.
When I was growing up our parents used to go to the market or shopping with rattan baskets which is enviromental friendly; what happened to all that and more? Why is our land being plunderred? Because you politicians, pastors, chiefs etc have all lost orientation. Religion does not produce smart phones or cars etc science and engineering does. In the 60's the town council worker will summon you before court for not keeping a healthy compound. 50 years on we have lost everything we did better those past years. Our country does not need new laws; what Ghana needs is a law enforcement unit to see to it that citizens adhere to the rule of law and order.
What a bunch of cluesless leaders!

"First of all Nana, let me correct your friend. I think he or she must be very young and knows only of JJ Rawlings. It is sad that even our history has been distorted by the people who for hatred of their own kind, distorted history to make it downplay the achievements of Kwame Nkrumah.
AT least I have had a chance to not only meet Nkrumah personally as a child from 5 feet away standing in front of him as a 6 years old, listening to his reasoning for FREEDOM from the British, and then see the changes he brought in our lives in terms of pipe-borne water, roads, schools and even electricity by the time I was going to Secondary School. At Abetifi Boys Boarding we had a huge Generator that was turned on at night only between 1957-60 when I was there, but later changed to electricity.
Rawlings could have done something for Ghana were it not for the greed of his own wife, as I have studied and heard, and the people around him he started with, meaning PV Obeng, Ato and Kwamena and Kwasi Ahwoi, The Tsikatas, Kwesi Botchwey, Totobi Kwakye, Kwamena Bartels and others.
Their greed translated into setting up what Profs. Acemoglu and Robinson call “extractive political and economic” institutions, meaning power is still in the hands of the same people making the laws and getting contracts. Ghana has a constitution that allows only one man, the President to appoint over 4,000 Town and Metropolitan city mayors, District Chief Executive and Regional Governors. Why do you think a Biometric registration system that cost Kenya $10 million cost Ghana $150 million?
Nana, the greatest damage that has been done to Ghana has come from Jerry Rawlings and his PNDC in the last constitution. Ghana is not a democracy at all. No! Forget it! Ghana has incurred over $13 Billion in loans from China alone and yet there has never been a detailed list of the Projects for which these loans are procured. Why? From your knowledge from UK to America, is that your understanding of how democracy works?
I think Osofo’s waiting for a Messiah is the thinking of the people, as Ghanaians and Africans are really very religious and have a very strong belief in the unknown. However a better word would be superstitious! As a child growing up 60 years ago we believed in dwarfs and ghosts and good and bad one who made some people rich and could solve certain mysteries. In the last 4 weeks when a Manager working for me got her Laptop and Smart phone stolen, the police, unable to use any modern detective systems told her it could be spiritual theft!
Such irrational belief systems make people stop half way when it comes to finding solutions to problems and occurrences, including malaria and other health problems. When a people think like that you cannot blame colonial Gov. Lord Frederick Lugard who observed that our peoples’ thoughts and emotions were for the day and had “no apprehensions for the future”. Somehow or the other this inability to solve problems correlated to a lower IQ, which many would not even like to consider. Intelligent people fathom problems and find solutions. Less intelligent people, unable to find solutions, resort to the blaming others, their fate, the supernatural, the devil, spiritual or at best give it to God, aka “fama-Nyame”.
Dr. Kodzo has explained it well as to why we don’t seem to take any actions.
NOW to YOUR QUESTION: What can we do?
See, Nana, I have never met you but I can judge you of the higher intelligence group. That is the first question one asks in order to improve on one’s fate or destiny or events that occur.
1. The first thing you do is compare and analyze and find out how others did it. For ever problems i the world, somebody has solved it before or there are methods by which they can be solved.
As a Failure analyst in my career, when say a Computer, chip, Memory device, Circuit, etc, fails, the first thing you do is find a good device and compare the characteristics of the good one. That is why I think everybody who cares should read Lee Kuan Yew’s “From Third World to First”. The world we live in is not or was not created at random as some people think. No! there is a formula for everything God created, and you will find that a Good Computer or Cell phone or smart Phone will have certain input and output currents or voltages, frequencies, and other electrical characteristics. So is Nation Building! It took Lee Kuan Yew only 35 years from 1965 to 2000 to do what it had taken America 200 years to do, in terms of UN and WB statistics such as GDP per capita, under-5 Mortality rate, Literacy rate, Agricultural Productivity rate, etc.
2. Having found why we are behind, the actual implementation is not that difficult. There are Management gurus and people with experience and technology to help us set up systems to monitor corruption, to detect thefts at the ports and even if need be a terrorist on the streets and to help us design budgets!
You cannot do any of these without the legal mandate, and that comes from a constitution that authorizes one person or a TEAM of people to manage.
Without changing the political system we have now, there is no way Ghana will make any development UNLESS and UNTIL the Messiahs shows up. Sure, it is possible to have one person win election and select say 5 people with whom to work to change Ghana in ten years. In fact I think we can do it in less time since all we have to do is attract the right dedicated Ghanaians itching to come home and use their talent or hire others.
Nothing we are doing makes a difference unless we change the POLITICAL system we have now were all decisions are made by one person and he can choose to declare he paid $150 million for something we all know should cost say $10 million.
At one time in our lives one man said: “SEEK YE FIRST THE POLITICAL KINGDOM” (and all other things shall be added). Kwame Nkrumah was right.
All the ideas we are giving to our friends in power will get to nowhere and all the 12 pages of suggestions I submitted to President Mills was perhaps thrown in the trash, and all you guys are writing today will not make an impact till Ghana CENTRALIZED ELECTED DICTATORSHIP is changed.
The greatest Political lost opportunity has been the rule of J.A. Kufuor. He will go down in history as one of the most selfish and useless leadership. He had the chance to change the constitution and he did not.
I am tired! I am selling my house and I am out!"

VERY TRUE STORY ABOUT THE UAE, 14TH MOST HAPPIEST NATION IN THE WORLD.
ASAMOAH GYAN "BABY JET" WILL LIVE TO TELL THE HAPPY TALE ABOUT HIS WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE IN THE UAE.
READERS SHOULD REMEMBER THAT THE UAE WAS A DESERT WASTELAND JUST ABOUT SOME 20 YEARS AGO.
By: Yasmine Hamdy
Emirates News Agency WAM reported on Sunday that the UAE is the happiest Arab country in the World and the 14th globally in the second United Nations World Happiness Report, quoting HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai on this occasion as saying:

UAE: always a reason to smile?
Dubai in top three ‘most improved’ cities
"Achieving happiness, welfare and dignified living for nationals and their families is the preoccupation of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This ranking would not have been possible without the efforts of sincere men, excellent teamwork and full coordination and integration between all local and federal government sectors.
"Our goal is to achieve the happiness of our people, and their satisfaction is the gauge of our success. All development plans that we approved, all initiatives that we launched and all the government policies and laws, have one common goal: achieving the happiness of our people. What we have already achieved is only the first stage, which will be followed by more work and achievements in order to become one of the world's best countries, God willing.
"Countries can only be built with happy and satisfied people. Happiness of individuals is only the start for a stable, productive and safe society. That is why relevant international organisations started to review the real yardstick for the success of governments and to increasingly focus on measuring the satisfaction and happiness of people as the main way towards sustainable development,"
HH highlighted the importance of embracing this criterion by all government officials, saying, "We gave directives to all government teams, during the recent Government Summit, that they should make their decisions and policies based on one goal, which is making society happy. No doubt happiness and satisfaction is something psychological for individuals, but the government's mission is to provide dignified living and welfare for its citizens, to make life easy for them as well as to create opportunities for them to achieve happiness for themselves and for their families. All this requires, among other things, joint efforts and policies and laws that are suitable for society, achieving security, justice and safety, taking care of underprivileged groups and the continuous development of infrastructure. This cannot be achieved without having clear-cut plans and excellent teams and taking the best advantage of the resources that are available to us.
HH Sheikh Mohammed finalized his great words adding:"We will continue forward to serve our country, achieve happiness for our sons and to invest all that we have to prepare people to make them able, strong, and skilled enough to achieve success. I say to all our people: be hopeful because we all overcame a lot of challenges in the past, and because our present is full of achievements, and our future is promising and is based on the highest ambitions" His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid concluded.

COMPARE THE UAE'S TRANSFORMATIVE HARDWORKING LEADERSHIP TO GHANA'S LAZY VISIONLESS FREELOADING CORRUPT LEADERSHIP, AND YOU'LL REALISE HOW USELESSLY HOPELESS WICKED AND CORRUPT GHANA'S SUCCESSIVE "LEADERS" ARE.
AS FOR GHANA'S 275 LAZY DUMB CORRUPT MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT AND THE GARGANTUAN NUMBER OF FREELOADING WICKED SUCCESSIVE PRESIDENTS AND PRESIDENTIAL STAFFERS, THE LITTLE SAID ABOUT THEM, THE BETTER.
I NOW REST MY CASE, BUT READ THE ABOVE ABOUT THE UAE AND ASK YOURSELVES THIS QUESTION:
ARE THE UAE LEADERS NOT AS HUMAN AND HUMANE AS THEIR GHANAIAN COUNTERPARTS?
NO WONDER MAHAMA AND HIS DUMB GHANAIAN ENTOURAGE WERE WELCOME THERE LIKE FOOLS BEGGING TO BE TAUGHT ON WAYS TO DEVELOP THEIR ECONOMIES FOR THE GOOD OF ALL GHANAIANS, INCLUDING THEMSELVES (GHANA'S DUMB CORRUPT VISIONLESS "LEADERS".

"Ghana needs to let VRA or the Giant Companies such as Bui Dam (under names such as Osagyefo Barge or whatever they call them, etc) do the Generation, and allow Smaller Private Companies do the Distribution and be regulated and with a direct Contract with the Consumer. Not only will this generate new Capital but it will also create lots of jobs and keep lawyers busy and rich as inefficiencies can be blamed not on Government but on AZAR ENERGY SYSTEM or DIBI-MAMENIBI ENERGIES.
As a fellow Electrical Engineer, I know what Ben is saying and with all due respect, our President and his staff and Ministers have no clue what he is talking about, since I have also emphasized this difference about reliability of electricity delivery many times in articles, with pictures of damages being done to appliances in Ghana, as well as letters. They just don’t get it! This was since the Kufuor administration, so please don’t think this is a Mahama problem.
There is a major vacuum of knowledge about electricity in Ghana at the executive level. Let’s face it, how many of them can differentiate and explain the concepts of what these mean:
Electrical Energy, Watt, Volt, Amp; kilo, Mega and Giga; Impedance, Resistance, Inductance; Hertz; VA, KVA;
Look, every Profession like Law, Medicine, Psychology, Brain Science (smile), have their terminologies of trade and I challenge even those on the forum besides Michel and Ben and K. Asare and few others how many can really explain these concepts here. Dr. Kwabena Donkor, Prof. Mike Ocquaye, Ato Ahwoi, Tsatsu Tsikata and many others parading the corridors of power are mere pretenders as experts in energy, but at heart they have very little understanding if any, and at best a mere rote memorization of what these concepts are. Most of them did not even take A level Physics, let alone EE 101. How the heck can we allow a whole nation’s energy to be in the hands of Historians and Political Science Majors? Even in Engineering there are specializations, just as in Medicine or even in Law! You don’t let an Eye doctor operate on your Spine and neither a family Law practitioner take your case when you are accused of a murder you did not commit and on death row.
Look, truth be told at heart some of these men may even be praying and think that will help in electricity!
If anybody doubts me, I will generate a quiz for them to take privately and I will grade them. No embarrassment since this will not be published. Dr. VB, are you there? Please tell your colleagues. I don’t mind saying this since some of these big men seeking the Presidency were my own students in High School and at the age I am society gives me the authority and privilege to point these things out, and there is nothing they can do!
PLEASE, give advice to the President! Let him hire the retired Engineers in Electrical and other Professions, to help him, if he is sincere. Making promises by themselves will not cut it. It was 2010 when I made that one-man desperate demonstration and he came on the news making promises and he did not make this a Project and never really understood the full picture, believing explanations of non-experts, or that Bui Dam or Osagyefo Barge will generate 110MW or 200MW, is the answer, when in fact they also have to be distributed over antiquated electrical Transformers and lead to the same problems! I am disappointed they did not take Ben for advice, but that is up to them."

Yoo Kwesi oh, eyime bebia, the elephant in the room is NDC under John Mahama turning a blind eye to the galameseyers from China. They are arrested and with a wink and a node lets them loose on the environment through the revolving door. Until Mahama enforces the laws in the books on the environment and uphold the constitution he swore to defend, the foreigners, the mining companies from South Africa and their likes will continue to thump the noses at Ghana. How does the country cave into mining companies threating to lay off workers if the they are required to fulfil the social responsibilities sim[ply by paying their fair share of taxes to Ghana government? Akuffo Addo is coming and they will pay when is in the Flagstaff House and Osu castle concurrently. Nana will restore the Osu Castle and put it to use instead of NDc under mahama let it go rot. Mahama is only and NDC in name only, "Nino." Nahama would havebeen better off joining PNP to save out party. Enforce the laws on the enviroment and tremo ve the galameseyers from China in our midst. Today they have resorted to do their galamesey in the dark of the night. wake up NDc, wake Ghana. The Ninos in leading NDC must be removed or risk going into opposition come 2016. Its not about Akuffo Addo or Ndc, it is about saving Ghana and restoring honor to the presidency and our beloved country.

If we empower the youth to have a reason to clean their environment, they will do it. It has been done in Ghana before where residents were scared of the metropolitan officers coming to their homes. These days under our very corrupt gov'ts we dole out huge sums of money to one company called ZOOMLION, who apparently bought a copy of this book for 10,000. Under SMC1, when Gen Acheampong instituted OFY (Operation feed yourself), this was so successful because every Ghanaian got involved and was termed OSR (Operation self reliance). We can look at this model to clean up Ghana. Setting up white elephants to dole out huge sums of money won't cut it!

"The idea that smaller private companies distribute electricity is a very good one. It may generate jobs etc - all good in theory. Will it work in Ghana in the current climate I ask myself and the unfortunate answer is no.
Let us look at the telephone service providers for example. They are mainly private companies. Are they providing what you and I may describe as even a fair service? I do not need to answer that. Let us look at the state of the various public/private partnerships. Have they worked? I do not need to answer that either. I think you live in Accra when you are in Ghana. Another little example-the motorway. The toll collection is in private hands isn't it? How much do we envisage they collect a day? What do they do with the money? Any inclination as to improving the condition and expanding the road? I doubt it.
I believe that if systems and regulations and education are not improved so the ordinary person understand what his responsibilities are as to the utility companies and these companies on the other hand, what is expected of them and the consequences if they do not meet targets set for them, going down the road as suggested by you will be another recipe for disaster. It will be just another means by which people in authority who have no clue and any nation building feeling will fleece the ordinary Ghanaian without any improvement in efficiency.
You have continuously said it: Ghana has no leadership, we have no plans, we do not seem to know where we want to be, in say the next ten years. Most decisions taking by government seem to be reactionary instead of it to be proactive so we are forever chasing our tails. I hope I am wrong
I have always said the duty of a good government is to put the structure (systems) in place (legal, infrastructure, call it what you like) to facilitate growth be it by private or public means."

The issue is we as a country should work at pollution prevention practices such as source reduction thus reduction in waste generation and end-of-line practices such as recycling, reuse etc in case we generate them. We should look at green practices in general. The issue of generating the waste, collecting them and dumping them at site is just like paying Peter with Paul". The country should start charging the companies that generate the waste for not just to collect them but the incineration. There should also be an incentive(monetary) to anybody who use manufactured product and keeps the package for collection by the manufacture's agent. For example, coca cola pay "X" amount of money for every can drink sold out. This will prevent throwing of refuse all over the country.
