The spokesperson for the Christian Association of Nigeria, Oshodi chapter, Lagos State, Pastor Barnabas Otoibhi, said that Christmas was worth celebrating.

He said:

“The origin of Christmas, as we know it, could be traced to Roman Emperor, Constantine. Christmas was a day for celebrating the Sun God. However, because Constantine was a Christian, the day was changed to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.

“The tradition has continued to date and since the aim of Christmas is to celebrate Jesus since there is nothing bad in honoring Jesus. Also, the worship of the Sun God was done in Rome and not everywhere in the world, so it is not part of our history.

The history of Christmas reveals quite a bit of controversy. For one, the date of Christ's actual birth is unknown. It is not recorded in the Bible. History of Christmas on December 25
Not only did church leaders argue and speculate about the date, they also disagreed about the appropriateness of birthday celebrations within the Christian church. Much of the contention stems from the pagan customs associated with the origins of Christmas. Yet, today all Christian denominations and faith groups, aside from the Church of Armenia, celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25.

The History of Christmas

It is believed that the first celebrations of Christ's birth were originally grouped together with Epiphany, one of the earliest feasts of the Christian church observed on January 6. This holiday recognized the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles by remembering the visit of the Magi (wise men) to Bethlehem and, in some traditions, the baptism of Jesus and his miracle of turning water into wine. Today the feast of Epiphany is observed predominately in liturgical denominations such as Eastern Orthodox, Anglican and Catholic.
Even as far back as the second and third centuries, we know church leaders disagreed about the appropriateness of birthday celebrations within the Christian church. Some men like Origen felt birthdays were pagan rituals for pagan gods. And since the date of Christ's actual birth had not been recorded, these early leaders speculated and argued about the date.

Some sources report that Theophilus of Antioch (circa 171-183) was the first to identify December 25 as the birth date of Christ. Others say that Hippolytus (circa 170-236) was the first to claim that Jesus was born on December 25. A strong theory suggests that this date was eventually chosen by the church because it aligned closely with a major pagan festival, dies natalis solis invicti (birth of the invincible sun god), thus allowing the church to claim a new celebration for Christianity.

Ultimately, December 25 was chosen, perhaps as early as A.D. 273. By 336 A.D., the Roman church calender definitively records a nativity celebration by Western Christians on this date. Eastern churches maintained the January 6 commemoration together with Epiphany until sometime in the fifth or sixth centuries when the 25th day of December became the widely accepted holiday. Only the Armenian church held to the original celebration of Christ's birth with Epiphany on January 6.

Mass of Christ

The term Christmas appeared in Old English as early as 1038 A.D. as Cristes Maesse, and later as Cristes-messe in A.D. 1131. It means "the Mass of Christ." This name was established by the Christian church to disconnect the holiday and its customs from its pagan origins. As one fourth century theologian penned, "We hold this day holy, not like the pagans because of the birth of the sun, but because of Him who made it."
Although it is true that many traditional Christmas customs find their origins in pagan practices, these ancient and forgotten associations are far removed from the hearts of Christian worshipers today at Christmastime. So much so, it seems a pointless concern. If the focus of Christmas is Jesus Christ and his gift of eternal life, then what harm can come from such a celebration? Moreover, Christian churches see Christmas as an occasion to spread the good news of the gospel at a time when many unbelievers pause to consider Christ.

Why Do We Celebrate Christ's Birthday?

I am compelled to respond with a few simple questions of my own: Why do we celebrate a child's birthday? Why do we celebrate a loved one's birthday? Is it not to remember and cherish the significance of the event? What other event throughout all time is more significant than the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ? It marks the arrival of Immanuel, God With Us, the Word Become Flesh, the Savior of the World—his is the most significant birth ever. It is the central event in all of history. Time chronicles backward and forward from this moment. I find myself wanting to ask, how can we fail to remember this day with great joy and reverence? How can we not celebrate Christmas?

It's not that difficult to recognize what really drives the holiday in our age. Cal Thomas, an American syndicated columnist who often writes from a Christian perspective, acknowledged uncomfortable truths about Christmas in a December 2003 column.
"I'm not sure it's worth keeping Christmas anymore," he began, lamenting that the holiday has become a "road show of reindeer, winter scenes, elves and the God substitute, Santa Claus, who serves as a front for merchants seeking to play on the guilt some parents bear for ignoring their kids the rest of the year."
He asks a great question: "Why participate any longer in this charade where the focal point of worship has shifted from a babe in a manger to a babe in the Victoria 's Secret window? . . . No room in the inn has been replaced by no room in the mall parking lot."
But perhaps his most insightful statement is this: "It's instructive how just one season away from lusting after material things can break the habit. It's something like liberation from an addiction or lifestyle choice. Being away from it can cause one to realize the behavior is neither missed nor needed for fulfillment and enjoyment."
Having said good-bye to the Christmas habit several decades ago, I couldn't have said it better myself!
2. Christmas is nowhere mentioned in the Bible.
This is rather obvious, but most people never give it a second thought. The books of the New Testament cover 30+ years of Jesus Christ's life, then another 30+ years of the early Church following His death and resurrection, but nowhere do we find any hint of a Christmas celebration or anything remotely like it.
Yes, the Bible does give us quite a few details of His birth—the angelic appearance to Mary and then Joseph, the conditions surrounding His birth in a stable in Bethlehem, the heavenly choir's performance for the shepherds in the fields outside the town. But nowhere in the Bible is there any record of anyone observing Christmas or any hint that God the Father or Jesus Christ expects us to do so.
3. Jesus wasn't born on or near Dec. 25.
Surprising but true! Remember those shepherds who were "living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night"? (Luke 2:8
). December weather around Bethlehem is often miserably cold, wet and rainy. No shepherd in his right mind would have kept his flocks outside at night at that time of year!
The Interpreter's One-Volume Commentary says this passage argues "against the birth [of Christ] occurring on Dec. 25 since the weather would not have permitted" shepherds to be out in the fields with their flocks then.
And Celebrations: The Complete Book of American Holidays tells us that Luke's account of Christ's birth "suggests that Jesus may have been born in summer or early fall. Since December is cold and rainy in Judea, it is likely the shepherds would have sought shelter for their flocks at night" (p. 309) rather than keeping them outdoors.
Also, Luke 2:1-4

tells us that Jesus was born in Bethlehem because his parents came to that town to register in a Roman census. The Romans were well known as highly efficient administrators. It would have made no sense to have conducted a census in the dead of winter, when temperatures often dropped below freezing and traveling was difficult due to poor road conditions. Taking a census under such conditions would have been self-defeating!
4. The Christmas holiday is largely a recycled pagan celebration.
Again, surprising but true! Read it for yourself in just about any encyclopedia.
Consider the customs associated with Christmas. What do decorated evergreen trees, holly, mistletoe, yule logs, a jolly plump man in a fur-lined red suit, sleighs and flying reindeer have to do with the birth of Jesus Christ?
None of these things have anything to do with Him, but they have a lot to do with ancient pagan festivals. (Read the eye-opening details in our free booklet Holidays or Holy Days: Does It Matter Which Days We Keep? )
And what about the date of Dec. 25? How did it come to be assigned as the supposed date of Jesus Christ's birth? Historians Gerard and Patricia Del Re explain:
"The tradition of celebrating December 25 as Christ's birthday came to the Romans from Persia. Mithra, the Persian god of light and sacred contracts, was born out of a rock on December 25. Rome was famous for its flirtations with strange gods and cults, and in the third century the unchristian emperor Aurelian established the festival of Dies Invicti Solis, the Day of the Invincible Sun, on December 25.
"Mithra was an embodiment of the sun, so this period of its rebirth was a major day in Mithraism, which had become Rome's latest official religion . . . It is believed that the emperor Constantine adhered to Mithraism up to the time of his conversion to Christianity. He was probably instrumental in seeing that the major feast of his old religion was carried over to his new faith" ( The Christmas Almanac, 1979, p. 17).
It's difficult to determine the first time anyone celebrated Dec. 25 as Christmas, but historians generally agree that it was sometime during the fourth century—some 300 years after Christ's death. And then a contrived date was chosen because it was already a popular pagan holiday celebrating the birth of the sun god!
Similarly, virtually all of the customs associated with Christmas are recycled from ancient pagan festivals honoring other gods.
5. God condemns using pagan customs to worship Him.
Since Christmas is supposedly a day to worship and celebrate God the Father and Jesus Christ, wouldn't it be a good idea to look into the Bible to see what it says about how we should worship God?
The answer is quite clear. God gives specific instruction about using pagan practices to worship Him— the exact thing Christmas does! Notice what He says in Deuteronomy 12:30-32

: ". . . Do not inquire after their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.' You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way . . . Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it" (emphasis added throughout).
And lest some think this is simply an Old Testament command that no longer applies, the apostle Paul makes the same point in 2 Corinthians 6, where he addresses whether unbiblical religious customs and practices have any place in the worship of God's people:
"What fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial [the devil and/or demons]? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God . . .
"Therefore 'Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.' 'I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.' Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" (2 Corinthians 6:14-18

; 7:1).
Rather than relabeling pagan customs as Christian, or allowing members of the Church to continue their old pagan practices, the apostle Paul told them in no uncertain terms to leave behind all these forms of worship and worship God in true holiness as He commands. Jesus likewise says His true followers "must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24
)—not revel in recycled pagan customs and symbolism.
6. Christmas is worshipping God in vain.
Since Christmas is a jumble of ancient pagan customs invented by men, and a holiday found nowhere in the Bible, does God honor or accept such worship?
Jesus provides the answer in His stern rebuke of the religious teachers of His day, men who had substituted human traditions and teachings for God's divine truths and commands: "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites . . . 'in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' . . . All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition" (Mark 7:6-9

).
In the 17th century Christmas was actually outlawed in England and some parts of the American colonies because of its unbiblical and pagan origins. They knew something most people today have forgotten or have never known!
7. You can't put Christ back into something He was never in.
Some people admit the many problems with Christmas. But rather than face up to those problems, some assert that we should "put Christ back in Christmas."
However, it's impossible to "put Christ back in Christmas" since He never was in Christmas in the first place! He never so much as heard the word "Christmas" during His lifetime on earth, nor did His apostles after Him. You can search the Bible cover to cover but you won't find the words "Christmas," "Christmas tree," "mistletoe," "holly," "Santa Claus" or "flying reindeer."
Putting Christ back in Christmas may sound like a nice sentiment, but it's really only a misguided effort to try to justify a long-standing human tradition rather than what the Bible tells us we should do.
8. The Bible nowhere tells us to observe a holiday celebrating Jesus Christ's birth —but it clearly does tell us to commemorate His death.
As noted earlier, the Bible nowhere mentions Christmas or tells us to celebrate Christ's birth.
This is not to say that the Bible doesn't tell us to commemorate a highly significant event in Jesus Christ's life on earth. It does —but that event is His death, not His birth.
Notice what the apostle Paul, conveying the instructions of Jesus Himself, tells Christians: "For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, 'Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.'
"In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.' For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes . . . Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup" (1 Corinthians 11:23-28

).
And yes, many believers do what they consider a form of this today in taking communion or "the Lord's supper." They fail to realize, however, the full significance of these acts, or that what Paul is actually describing here is the Passover — which is what Jesus Himself called this observance (Matthew 26:18-19

; Mark 14:14-16

; Luke 22:8-13

, 15).
And many have no idea of the real date of Christ's death and the annual Passover observance, but that's an issue for another time. (Hint: It isn't "Good Friday" prior to Easter as so many mistakenly believe. See our booklet Holidays or Holy Days: Does It Matter Which Days We Keep? for details.) The point is: Jesus clearly expects His true followers to commemorate His death—not His birth—by observing the Passover.
9. Christmas obscures God's plan for mankind.
Passover, mentioned above, has enormous significance in God's plan for humanity. The Old Testament Passover, described in Exodus 12, was symbolic of Jesus Christ's future role and sacrifice. As the blood of the slain Passover lambs on the Israelites' houses spared them while the firstborn of the Egyptians were slain, so does Jesus Christ's sacrificial death on our behalf spare us from death— eternal death.
Paul alluded to this great truth when he wrote in 1 Corinthians 5:7
that "Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us." Similarly John the Baptist, speaking under divine inspiration, said of Jesus, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29
).
Peter wrote that we are redeemed "with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:19
)—a clear reference to the Passover lambs (Exodus 12:5
).
A central key to God's plan for humanity is Jesus Christ's sacrificial death on our behalf. He is "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13:8
)—meaning His death for our sins was planned before the first human beings were ever created (1 Peter 1:18-20

). Only through His death to pay the penalty for our sins can human beings receive God's gift of eternal life (John 3:14-17

; Acts 4:12
; 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

).
Christmas, in contrast, teaches us none of this. Regrettably, because it is a hodgepodge of unbiblical customs and beliefs thrown together with a few elements of biblical truth, it only obscures the incredible purpose of Jesus Christ's coming—as well as why He must return to earth a second time! 10. I'd rather celebrate the Holy Days Jesus Christ and the apostles observed.
God in His Word sets out many choices for us. Will we do things His way or our own? Will we worship Him as He tells us to, or expect Him to honor whatever religious practices we choose regardless of what His Word says?
It's always good to ask the question, What would Jesus do? The answer, from the Scriptures, is quite clear as to what Jesus did. Jesus didn't allow His followers the option of adopting pagan practices in their worship. He and the apostles plainly kept God's Holy Days and festivals that we find recorded in Leviticus 23.
As noted above, they kept the Passover (1 Corinthians 11:23-26

). Scripture shows they also observed the Days of Unleavened Bread (Acts 20:6
; 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

). The New Testament Church itself was founded on the Feast of Pentecost (Acts 2:1
), another biblical festival they clearly observed (Acts 20:16
). They likewise kept the Day of Atonement (called "the Fast" in Acts 27:9
) and the Feast of Tabernacles (John 7:2
, 10).
Christmas, meanwhile, is totally missing from the biblical record.
Most people don't know that the Bible includes a whole list of festivals that God commanded, that Jesus Himself observed and that the apostles and early Church were still keeping decades after Christ's death and resurrection. And unlike Christmas, these reveal a great deal about Jesus Christ's role and mission.
Each one teaches us a vital lesson in what Jesus has done, is doing and will yet do in carrying out God's great plan for humankind. The differences between these and the tired old paganism and crass commercialism of Christmas is truly like the difference between day and night. Why not look into them for yourself?

Second, the roman emperor (constantine), according to history, after he sought for direction in a battle, had a vision of a descending cross and a voice from heaven (which he claimed was the LORDS') telling him to go for the war. Third, what impact is the celebration of xmas to us? Just after the church service is a display of several desires of the flesh such as drunkeness, sex, partying, gluttony, and the likes. My questions are; is there not a spirit behind this celebration? Is this celebration expedient? Why not invest such time to inculcate in the pple spiritual things of eternal value and have them prepared for heaven? SELAH.

I'm not convinced modern Christians should be celebrating the Jewish holidays either. Paul seems not to think so -- Romans 14-15 seems to indicate that the position of the "stronger brother", the one Paul holds himself, is that Christians shouldn't observe ANY days as holier than others. While he tells the Romans repeatedly to tolerate each other's differing position on holidays (and food laws), he has a stronger word for the Galatians:
"But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces [or principles]? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you. I plead with you, brothers and sisters, become like me, for I became like you" (Galatians 4:9-12).
The broader context of the letter suggests that has Jewish holidays in mind: throughout Galatians, Paul has harsh words for Christians who insist on adopting Jewish traditions in general, even those God had explicitly commanded the Israelites to follow (e.g., the rather extreme suggestion for people who think Christians should be circumcised). Jesus and his disciples were Jewish, and so celebrated Jewish holidays and kept Jewish food laws -- but an astonishing portion of the New Testament is devoted to correcting those who were teaching that the Gentile Christians needed to do the same.

it's interesting to note that the holy days are not Jewish holy days. They are God's holy days. Lev 23:1 "The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts."
Furthermore, the subject being talked about in Romans 14 is regarding whether or not to fast on certain days and on whether to be vegetarian. It is not required to be vegetarian or to fast on any certain day of the week over another. However, this has no bearing on keeping God's festivals. They are still to be kept. With regards to Galatians, Christians are most definitely still to be circumsised. But now, our circumcision is circumcision of the heart through baptism. Paul had to correct the misunderstading of the parts of the old covenant that were changed. ie, the ceremonial and animal sacrificial laws. Again, this does not affect the need to keep God's holy days. They teach us His plan of salvation!

Besides, Pastor Kumuyi is still one of the men of God of our time who constantly maintains the true word of God. I have been a leader in Church matters for the past forty years and I personally understand the Bible through the Holy Spirit; presently a pastor in New Covenant Church. From the Bible point of view, it a mockery of the principles of Jesus to present yourselves as Jesus people by celebrating a day for Jesus when you live in bribery, corruption, fornication, adultery, deceits, and all other vices; it amounts to idolatry. The religion of the Bible was Judaism, but because religion alone cannot make man to please God,Jesus came primarily to die for our sin and to empower us with the Holy Spirit and to enable us to live holy lives. If you have not fulfill what the Bible requires what justification do you have to celebrate Christmas which is not in the Bible in the name Jesus Christ? In Matthew 8:20, Jesus said "son of man has nowhere to lay His head", this never meant where to sleep, rather whom to take what was in His mind and follow His footsteps. The church leadership blame politicians for problems of society, but how far have they led the church as really instructed by Jesus. The early church had power because some witnessed what Jesus did and followed same, what about today? Even things that are normal human experiences are miracles????.

The point is we can choose any day, consecrate it and make the day we will set aside to honour Jesus or any ruler. Case in point haven't the English chosen to celebrate the Queen's birthday at a date and month different from her actual date of birth. If the day was previously sat aside as the day ancient people worship the sun, who says we cannot change it for different purpose? Don't we always rename landmarks after famous people who have passed away, even though they have pre-existing names? Go figure. Lead Christ-like life, for from where I sit, everyday is his day.

A. Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness celebrated between December 17-25. During this period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman law dictated that no one could be punished for damaging property or injuring people during the weeklong celebration. The festival began when Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.” Each Roman community selected a victim whom they forced to indulge in food and other physical pleasures throughout the week. At the festival’s conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man or woman.

B. The ancient Greek writer poet and historian Lucian (in his dialogue entitled Saturnalia) describes the festival’s observance in his time. In addition to human sacrifice, he mentions these customs: widespread intoxication; going from house to house while singing naked; rape and other sexual license; and consuming human-shaped biscuits (still produced in some English and most German bakeries during the Christmas season).

C. In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in converting to Christianity large numbers of pagans by promising them that they could continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.[2]

D. The problem was that there was nothing intrinsically Christian about Saturnalia. To remedy this, these Christian leaders named Saturnalia’s concluding day, December 25th, to be Jesus’ birthday.

E. Christians had little success, however, refining the practices of Saturnalia. As Stephen Nissenbaum, professor history at the University of Massachussetts, Amherst, writes, “In return for ensuring massive observance of the anniversary of the Savior’s birth by assigning it to this resonant date, the Church for its part tacitly agreed to allow the holiday to be celebrated more or less the way it had always been.” The earliest Christmas holidays were celebrated by drinking, sexual indulgence, singing naked in the streets (a precursor of modern caroling), etc.

F. The Reverend Increase Mather of Boston observed in 1687 that “the early Christians who first observed the Nativity on December 25 did not do so thinking that Christ was born in that Month, but because the Heathens’ Saturnalia was at that time kept in Rome, and they were willing to have those Pagan Holidays metamorphosed into Christian ones.”[3] Because of its known pagan origin, Christmas was banned by the Puritans and its observance was illegal in Massachusetts between 1659 and 1681.[4] However, Christmas was and still is celebrated by most Christians.

G. Some of the most depraved customs of the Saturnalia carnival were intentionally revived by the Catholic Church in 1466 when Pope Paul II, for the amusement of his Roman citizens, forced Jews to race naked through the streets of the city. An eyewitness account reports, “Before they were to run, the Jews were richly fed, so as to make the race more difficult for them and at the same time more amusing for spectators. They ran… amid Rome’s taunting shrieks and peals of laughter, while the Holy Father stood upon a richly ornamented balcony and laughed heartily.”[5]

H. As part of the Saturnalia carnival throughout the 18th and 19th centuries CE, rabbis of the ghetto in Rome were forced to wear clownish outfits and march through the city streets to the jeers of the crowd, pelted by a variety of missiles. When the Jewish community of Rome sent a petition in1836 to Pope Gregory XVI begging him to stop the annual Saturnalia abuse of the Jewish community, he responded, “It is not opportune to make any innovation.”[6] On December 25, 1881, Christian leaders whipped the Polish masses into Antisemitic frenzies that led to riots across the country. In Warsaw 12 Jews were brutally murdered, huge numbers maimed, and many Jewish women were raped. Two million rubles worth of property was destroyed.

It is Him that we are looking for when we are trying very hard to acquire wealth or get high on drugs or booze. Personally, i dont idolise christmas. I dont but special dress, increase my commitment to Christ or do anything special for chrismas sake. but i like the holidays bit and all the sales and the family gathering. I am strict follower of Christ and i only do what the Bible say i should do. Christmas is a whole heap of troubles! accidents, clubbing, drinking, immorality, but i only part take in the biblical way such as family gathering, dine and wine, go to church -not because is christmas- and rest! anyway... ive got my turkey out of the freezer already

Yes some pagans were using the date for their celebration before constantine became a christian nd decided to use it to remember christ.There is nothing wrong with that and we use it to draw attention of the world that the saviour of the world was born.In gh xmas nd easter are the only times that jesus's film is shown on telly.

A Sunday when the believers have met in the upper room (Acts 2:1 down). In 1 Corinthians 16:2 down, Paul admonished the believers to get their offerings ready when they meet. "Upon the first day of the week... as God has prospered him..." Obviously, that first day of the week is Sunday. So in the Bible, the believers met on Sundays. Besides, Christ resurrected on Sunday, so after all these events, the believers saw the need to meet on Sunday's not Saturdays anymore. I hope it makes sense.

There has been no occasion in the life of Christians has it ever been established, admitted, affirmed or confirmed Christmas is an act of faith or a dogmatic belief. It is ONLY a tradition that, like other traditions, only help to put a perspective to Christ's birth!

Jesus Christ who embarked on preaching and healing crusades didn't advocate or call for Churches springing after his death. Churches were created in his honor as instrument to enforce his doctrines about love and unity and spiritual approach to God. Taking the season's most important occasion literally just kind of takes away the substance from it, and that's misunderstanding it's precepts.

Even old or orthodox Christian faiths don't have any complexes in admitting 25th December is an arbitrary choice based on when Jesus was supposed to have been born following certain traditions and signs prevalent at the time. But that has nothing to do with the mystery and power of faith that gives certain people peace and perspective and meaning to their life.

Nobody's worshiping Christmas. In a very mutable and troubled world where peace continues to elude even the most peaceful mortals such celebrations are a welcome break in the monotony.

The reality and the whole truth about the Christmas celebration is that, the first Roman Empire to turn Christian, Emperor Constantine, wanting a festive moment for his subjects to make them happy as Christians inculcated the idol worshiping of the Roman agricultural festival celebrating the sun into Christianity.

The solution here is even made more simpler if Christians will challenge the fact, the Bible tells us that when Jesus was born there was this shining star that led the three Shepherd to his birth place to enable them worship the baby messier. How could that be for a shining star in December when thick snow covers the whole Middle East where Jesus was born?

The fact also is, the Western enterprising bourgeois has seen Christmas as a major event to promote their products and sales to maximized profit and enjoy fat on the poor so they see Christmas as a major opportunity for commercial and they do everything through the media, TV, social net working, organizing things like partying, music and dancing competitions for social gatherings and advertising their products for attraction to promote sales. Time for the non- believers to make money.

Meanwhile the Western musicians singing the Christmas chorus Christians follow are mostly homosexuals, lesbians, pedophiles, drug addicts, child abusers and demonic rock stars, yet Christians despicably led by greedy myopic minded Pastors are encouraged to celebrate Christmas as if its the real date of birth of the Messier and our soon coming King, Jesus!!!

Let me also add here that the ten percent tithe demanded by Pastors is as well NOT biblical.

The New Covenant under the Grace through Jesus Christ has made all old things pass away. We are no more under any obliged mosaic laws to pay one tenth of our income to anybody, it's a pastoral crime.

We serve a generous God and He wants us to give generously by our own free conscience and free will. As and when He touches our hearts, the Generous Jehovah God we worship will cause us to give generously beyond the one tenth of our income.

My question here is, which is more easier and rewarding? Giving under a free Grace through Jesus Christ our Savior or giving under obligation of an old passed law which was passed according to the needs of the time of a particular generation?

The truth has never been hidden that, December 25 is a day the Church has set aside to commemorate the birth of Jesus. This should be understood by most Africans who do not know their birthdays but set aside a day in the year to celebrate their birthdays.
The gospels actually did not indicate when Jesus was born - but they present no ambiguity about the fact that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea and that he was born to save the world from our sin.
There is nowhere in the Bible where believers have been forbidden from commemorating the birth of Christ. Instead, the bible makes it clear that Christ who is truly God, is also truly man as a result of his birth and life as a man - " ... the Word became human and lived here on earth among us." John 1:14. There cannot be anything ungodly about rejoicing over this great mystery that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The fact that the world has turned into a commercial festival does not mean that this is what the church does.
Those who oppose the celebration of Christmas are just being hypocrites particularly as they celebrate their own birthdays those of their loved ones.
Arbitrary interpretation of the Bible leads nowhere but confusion. For instance to interpret the fact that the Bible gives no clue about when Jesus was born to mean His birthday should not be celebrated is shallow thinking.

This is just porous theology. Emperor Constantine simply wanted to replace the orgy or drinking, open air sex and sacrifice of children, among other depravities that characterised their pagan celebrations into something more decent, during which gifts were exchanged, animosities settled and families re-united.

What is wrong with that? What is wrong with celebrating the birthday of the King of Creation when ordinary mortals concoct frivolous anniversaries and celebrate them with stolen state funds?

I appreciate people expressing their views on the above subject without insulting the man of God and I pray that God's Children will learn to speak to each other in love but firmly in the light of His WORD if they do not agree with what people say. Unbelievers may do so but let us who are Children of God in accordance with John 1:12 learn to honour God's men who have laboured hard for Him.

Regarding the subject in question what comes into mind is Luke 1:8 - 14. Verse 11 tells us that God announced the day His Son Jesus was born to men through Angels and verses 13 and 14 tell us that "And suddenly there was the angel a multitude of Heavenly host praising God and saying; "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will towards men"

I therefore believe that if the angels sang praises to God on the day Jesus was born then it is worth praising God Almighty, by thanking and praising Him for the birth of Christ and this is what I believe Christians do in December. And if Constantine changed the sun god celebration to Christmas then it is a defeat for the sun god and a clear message to that so called god the we the successive generation will worship God Almighty and Jesus our Lord. Further, all the 7 days were created by God Almighty as written in Genesis and we His children are not prepared to give a fraction of it to demons

I know Pastor Kumuyi, his church and his teachings very well so I am not worried about his teaching. His teachings brought confusions and caused a break- away in many churches in Lagos in the late 1970's and early 1980's. He used to wear one particular shirt anytime he appeared to do Bible teaching and strangely many of the brothers who were attending the study also started doing same I know that we are saved by our faith in Jesus Christ and not because we celebrate or we do not celebrate X'mas and other occasions. I refer to Rom 14: 3-9.It says whoever observes a day should not condemn whoever does not observe it because to one person a day is important to another it is not, as such we should dwell on our convictions. The Holy Spirit directs our conscience and convinces us to please God in all things,including our eating, drinking and celebrations. Kumuyi's followers are people who follow all that their leader says without asking questions or praying for their own convictions or even trying to find out from their Bibles even though they carry big reference bibles with them. The Question: Is God angry if we celebrate the birth of Christ , Is he angry if we do not celebrate The birth of Christ. I think you should leave the pastor alone to prepare his congregation for the coming of The Lord. He is only cautioning his members not to be carried away with festivities and celebrations, he did not ask you none members to stop celebrating Christmas. If you decide to celebrate Christmas everyday fine, go ahead but stop abusing the man of God. There are much more important things probably said in that sermon that could help us to be blessed and the so called reporters refused to hear that. We need to be careful what we say about others, especially reps of God. If Mahama believes in christmas as a Christian, why has chosen to spend Christmas where people don't spend Christmas?

Obviously, that first day of the week is Sunday. So in the Bible, the believers met on Sundays. Besides, Christ resurrected on Sunday, so after all these events, the believers saw the need to meet on Sunday's not Saturdays anymore. I hope it makes sense.

Mark 9:41 "For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Crist, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward." A cup of water is the least one give to another. You know today water is not free in your city where you live in the US. You can also read Matthew 23:23, it's kind of confusing if you are not careful, but the Lord Jesus was admonishing them to do both; ie: collecting paying tithe for upkeep of the ministers and also doing justice to the law and showing mercy too. Also in the Old testament, God instructed Israel to take care of the Levites. If you not satisfied wit these ref, I will help you with that of the Old Testament. God Bless You.

Where in the Bible do you find "Rev Somebody?" Where is ordination service in the Bible? Where can one find Pastors' Appreciation Day or Prophetic Messages Day? How about deliverance Day?

Certain traditions of the Church have grown as part of the Church's responsibility to its less able members and the rest of society.

So all over the world, Christians use the period to look after prisoners, the sick, the lonely,the dying, the homeless and destitute.

Most of these so-called charismatic churches have no schools, no charitable causes, nothing that benefits society. They only take from their poor congregations to live it big and propound porous doctrines!

The Last Supper was actually a Jewish "seder" - the Passover feast celebrating the exodus of the Jews from Egypt.

At "Christmas" (in December) Christ and his family would have celebrated "Hanukkah" - the Jewish festival of lights.

I sincerely believe there's nothing wrong with celebrating the birth of Christ if we can celebrate our own birthday. Yet these so-called evangelists and prophets would mount the podium and make speeches that demoralizes the children of our Lord Jesus Christ. It's time for the congregation to read the Bible and be enlightened on the Holy Scriptures. It's okay to be thankful to the Lord when He sent His only begotten son to save us. There's happiness in the Lord yet these men of God are asking Christians to be sorrowful all their lives, I suggest.

The Savior said in John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," but we love the lie, because as He said in John 8:44, 45 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not."

There we have it: we don't like truth, but prefer the lie, because our minds have been blinded by 'the god of this world ... lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto' us.

Puny men seem to forget that the Father has not granted to us to determine when and how to worship Him! These are His preserve alone. This kind of presumption leads to death. Remember Uzzah (2 Chronicles 6: 6,7) and the Savior's words in Mark 7:6-9, "Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition." Again, He warned in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Is it the Father's will that His children celebrate Christmas to commemorate the birth of His Son? Each of us must determine the answer on the basis of His Word, and live with our choice!

Finally, let me throw in this too: Watch-night Services on December 31 do not honor the Creator God because the tradition is also based on a lie! You may insult me all you can, or you may want to research it. If you choose the latter option, and I hope you do, you may start with Exodus 12:1,2 and Romans 3:1,2. Then proceed to the internet.

I really do not want to waste any of my precious scarce time to border anybody about Deeper Christian Life Bible Ministry and their willful ignorance about the scriptures. But just to say a few, it has come to my notice from the Ghanaweb that founder and leader of Deeper Christian Life Bible Ministry pastor Kumuyi says celebrating Christmas is idolatory and unscriptural.
Before I answer him I want Pastor Kumuyi or any member of his ministry to provide me with the scriptural basis of the following.
1: that wearing of earrings is forbidden by God, One must see his partner in a dream before marrying, and one must always shaved his beard to be ritually clean. That watching television is evil and that television is the devil’s box. That communion should only be taken with fruit of the vane (is fruit juice same as wine?) and that the King James version of the Holy Bible is the most recommended book for Christians.
It is because of the doctrines of people like this that Christ prayed for the CHURCH that FATHER let them be one just as we are one. All churches belong to God and He alone qualifys to judge the world. If Pastor Kumuyi and his folks will not celebrate Christmas they should not criminalize it. We do it because wise me went and worshiped the baby Jesus when he was born.

If the world like what you preach it means you are not preachin the word of christ and you ar leadin peoples to hell! Those religious leaders when last the world hate your preaching and speak evil against you falsely like this? Those religious leaders who feed their belly with christmas gifts will not take to it. Celebrating of christmas is idolatory and unscriptural. The early church had no celebration for the birth of Jesus. The date was unknown. No living, heavenlyminded and bible believing church of christ will celebrate it as well. Moreover if christmas is all about holiness, righteousness, repentance and accept Jesus as lord and personal saviour that will take someone to heaven, the world will not partake in it. Look the way the world is demostrating their sins thinking they are celebrating the birth of Jesus the sinless man on earth our lord saviour. Celebrating of christmas on earth does not matter most to Jesus, what matter most is for you to celebrate with him in heaven. Are you born again?

It has no basis in the Bible and therefore should not mingle with the death of Christ which the servant of God never touched on in His message delivery. He may celebrate His birthday as rhetorically asked as a Pastor and is normal because that is what mortal men do, but with Christ, HIS DEATH IS TO BE CELEBRATED RATHER THAN HIS BIRTH BECAUSE HIS BIRTH DID NOT MAKE MEN SONS OF GOD BUT RATHER HIS DEATH. In the early 80's when deeper life was started the leaders deceived many to throw away their television sets, their couches, and many valuable things claiming that all these are worldly. Now Pastor Kumuyi is on television, he wears coat and has more than one shoe. He should not remove the landmark our forefathers have set. Proverbs 22:28. celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christ is biblical. Jesus said in John 12:32 And I if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. The Apostle Paul saw how important the birth of Jesus was so in 1Timothy 1:15 he said This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. We who are sinners celebrate the birth of our children. We get excited when our wives give birth to our children. I believe Pastor kumuyi has a passport and in his passport he has his date of Birth in it that has permitted him to travel world wide. Without his date of birth it would have been very difficult for him to plant churches around the world. Why should we celebrate the Birth of Christ which is Christmas. 1. The birth of Jesus was predestinated before the world began Eph.1:4-5 1 Peter 1:20. 2. The birth of Christ was promised by the father Genesis 3:15 3. The birth of Christ was prophesied by the angel Isaiah 7:14 Isaiah 9:6 Micah 5:2. 4. God planned where he was to be born Luke 2: 1,4-5. 5. Jesus was presented in the fullness of time. Galatians 4: 4-5. 6. The birth of Jesus was announced by the angel. Luke 2: 10-11. 7. The birth of Jesus was a preparation for salvation. Mathew 1:21 John 1. 10-14. Once upon a time Jesus was born. Christmas is not about a date per say but an event that took place in Bethlehem so if Christians are celebrating this day and some people want to kill it. I would encourage Christians to go ahead and celebrate it. It is not a time of drinking alcohol or getting involved in any immoral activity but a time of praising God for bringing salvation to the world. Christmas is worth celebrating.
