Is it necessary for dead brain Nkrumacrats to come out at this time to make such comparisons? Trust me, if you feel compelled to come out to defend Nkrumah because the whole world is memorializing and honoring Mandela, then either you are an idiot or Nkrumah was not great after all. What have this attention seeking Nkrumacrats done for themselves and the country since Nkrumah passed? You are behaving like Kwame Nkrumah, in one fell sweep, collected all the wisdom in Ghana and put them in a pot and took them to a tree top. Get real, Kwame Nkrumah trampled upon the rights of his fellow citizens, made himself a secular monarch and set the tone for autocratic rules all over Africa, the debilitating consequences of which we are still reeling off. Not one political prisoner was recorded under Mandela's rule; can we say the same for Nkrumah? Stop irritating our ears. If Kwame Nkrumah was good he wouldn't have been overthrown by the army. Get on with it; you cannot force Nkrumah's "greatness" down our throats.
If one has to come out at this particular time while we are mourning the loss of Mandela, to assert or push Nkrumah's greatness down our throats, then I am afraid he was not greater than Mandela. Nkrumah died alone in exile, the world barely blinked at his passing. Compare that with Mandela, not even close.
There are two observations that can be said of the CPP and Nkrumah; firstly they are intolerable of sharing the limelight or power with anybody or party. Secondly, that dictatorial and autocratic tendencies have reduced their so-called populist party to single digit opinion polls and if at all, one-member MP in parliament. So much for the legacy of Africa's "Showboy" greatness. Unlike Nkrumah, Mandela's greatness is spoken in superlative terms and not confined to Africa alone, but the whole wide world. Nkrumacrats are just envious someone else is stealing the spotlight. Just stop it, the timing of this comparison is just so inappropriate, it is comparable to somebody pissing on your parade.

It is useless to dwell on Obama's hypocritical speech in South Africa. He didn't apologize for the US role in the imprisonment of Mandela and the existence of apartheid. Obama also maintains the "Terrorist Watchlist" of several ANC veteran freedom fighters. Tokyo Sexwale, the former SA Housing Minister, was detained because of this list when he arrived in JFK Airport, New York on October 28th! It is clear Obama's words don't match his deeds.
Asante should stop seeking attention in the media and use his wisdom and experience to help current generation Nkrumahists to organize and save the country from the corrupt NDC and NPP.

Nkrumah died in shame at Guinea and Mandela died with his glory intact. Nkrumah was a political "Maradona" who cornered his colleagues and slap from behind to take power. Mandela got power unopposed and all the blacks were behind him. He did not betray any anyone. Mandela relinquished power voluntarily at the hight of his glory. Nkrumah ruled for 16 years and finally turned Ghana into a one party state and make himself a president for life.
Nkrumah sacked the whites and Mandela welcomed them. Nkrumah was a show boy and Mandela was a humble man. Mandela preached democracy and Nkrumah preached dictatorship and one man show.

Mandela did nothing spectacular. Other African leaders, including Nkrumah and Jomo Kenyattah, had come out of prison to reconcile with the white exploiters and oppressors. But his posture was just like that Jomo Kenyattah. He appeased and sold out to the whites for what the ANC elite could grab for themselves! Practically all of them have become multi-millionaires, as they were co-opted into what had become Global Apartheid based on wealth, with blacks in the bottom.
Yeah! What they fail to point out is there is no black in the colour rainbow in the Rainbow Nation they were creating.
Nkrumah, on the other hand, lived and died for the emancipation of the whole of Africa and Africans not only from colonial yoke but also neo-colonialism. His writings shall outlive Mandela, whom posterity will remember as the Great Appeaser who bought some more time for the exploitation of Africans by foreigners and the black elite, the new Buthelizis in the era of Global Apartheid with jet planes when the roads to their villages are not tarred.

Didn't dictator Kwame Nkrumah drive his political opponents out from Ghana? Why did Nkrumah political opponents fled from Ghana? Was he not trying to kill his political opponents?. Who killed JB Danquah? Wasn't Kwame Nkrumah? Have you heard any political opponent Mandela killed?
Didn't Kwame Nkrumah surround himself with uneducated people like Krobo Adusei so that Nkrumah would be 'god' among his cabinets and receive no opposition from his uneducated cabinet? Nkrumah was selfish and mean politician. If Nkrumah had implored the help of few educated Ghanaians in his administration at the time of our independence, Ghana would have been better than this. Nkrumah and his CPP elites looted the treasury of Ghana like P/NDC are doing now. If any other person had been in the helms of affairs of Ghana political affairs at that time, I bet you Ghana might be like Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan etc. These countries were not better than Ghana at that time. For the simple reason they had well meaningful leaders to lead them, look at where they are now.
Nkrumah did something good for Ghana. No doubts about that. Every district in Ghana had a secondary school. But we should not forget to talk about his bad sides. I believe, if it had been any other person like JB Danquah or Busia who had led Ghana at that time, Ghana would have been in a better place.
Nkrumah behavior made 1966 coup justified. Nkrumah dictatorial behavior paved way for these useless soldier to taste power, and saw that power was sweet. These useless Ghanaian soldiers continued to staged coup, which has rendered our country in a deplorable conditions now. If Nkrumah had been inclusive, perhaps Ghana wouldn't have seen any coup.
It was Nkrumah disastrous governance that pave way for tribal king like Rawlings to steal power for further destruction of Ghana. So, Nkrumah worshippers should know that Nkrumah was not so good for Ghana. The decadence and bad corruption in Ghana can be traced back to Nkrumah era.

Good one Elder Tettey. You can add this one too; For the over 400 years that they were here, our oppressors from the West never ever found the sense or the need to introduce democracy in Africa. It was Kwame Nkrumah who taught them how and it was he who also brought democracy to Black Africa. We are eternally grateful to him for this.
Today they and their local puppets the UP/ NPP, claim that Nkrumah killed democracy in Ghana. Kwame Nkrumah did not only introduce democracy for the first time in Ghana and Black Africa but he went beyond that old form of slave & master democracy in which the masses are fooled into voting for liars and tricksters every four years whilst they the people get poorer and poorer every four years. For doing this, the enemies of true democracy accuse Kwame Nkrumah for killing their decadent kind of democracy in Ghana.
Kwame Nkrumah attempted to introduce a kind of socialist democracy, a more decent and sensible kind of democracy in which there is only one national party like in China and all eligible citizens of the country vote for any aspiring presidents, ministers all the way right down to District Assembly Executives and other public office holders. In this way, no section of the people will be isolated and harassed when their particular party is not in power as happens in Ghana and elsewhere. In this way, all members of society will not and cannot be ostracized or ignored because their party will always be in power.
Another advantage of this is that development continues and thrives uninterrupted and unabated. There is no undermining of the achievements and development projects of one political party by another as has continued to happen in Ghana much to our collective disadvantage. Also there can be no dangerous tribal politics and there can be no NDC Police, NPP church, NDC Judges, NPP Civil Service, NPP Medical doctors or even hospitals and all those stupid politicization of public institutions that continue to hamper and stifle our much-needed development.
Because of the harsh and unfortunate consequences of 400 years of slavery and colonialism, it is only the Black man who will continue to practice a system that has not worked for us, 50 whole years after it was introduced, without considering the necessity of change. This is not only because we cannot seem to think for ourselves, but it is also because we are afraid of change for the better.
60 years ago, Kwame Nkrumah saw that the old western type of slave democracy which we still continue to practice today, and in which only a handful of people gain to the disadvantage of the majority, cannot possibly promote national development or the ultimate well-being of Africa. Africans are by nature a socialistic or a Christian-like race of people. We care - or we used to care about each other and even other races of people. Today we have adopted the ways of the devil / Satan. We worship only mammon (money or material) and any kind of vice which can enable us acquire mammon, so that like our slave masters, we too can pompously and arrogantly lord it over our own brothers and sisters.
We are beginning to lose that divine exquisite quality that distinguished the God-like superiority of the African race from all other decadent races of some other people on earth.

The whites all over the world are praising the greatest human being that ever lived. And the Nkrumahists are throwing fit all around. They are criticizing and blaming the whites for doing so because Mandela dance to their tunes.
Yet, the same people are happy that a BBC (white establishment) decided to do a survey about "who is the greatest African" And we have the Afrikanists and Nkrumahists who have accepted this stupidity or "divide and rule" because it fits into their diabolical agenda. I am restraining myself here for not calling them names. But can you believe the illogical nonsense here. What they are saying is this- we will accept the whiteman's opinion or undertaking if it favors us, but we are Afrikanists and Nkruamahists (whatever that is) and will only believe something that comes from Africa and Africans. What a hopeless bunch.
Yes, a hopeless bunch who live in whitemans land and keep on with such nonsense about Afrikanists and Africa for Africans nonsense. Can't even live in the so called called continent that their god (Nkrumah) changed. What a logic!
I am embarrassed. Can you imagine this idiot, I mean a useless stupid womanizer like that wanted to be the head of our Country?
The nation that was "founded" by Nkrumah still does not have water and electricity for its people after 50 years. We still shyt on our beaches.
The Party that was "founded" by Nkrumah was even lucky to have one MP in the parliament.
The people that were "educated" are so useless and corrupt that they don't even know where this country is heading to.
So United States of Africa that Nkrumah proposed was rejected in 1963 and by 1965, the idea was dead.
So tell me why should we even have this comparison about the 2 men? I have said that, Ghana is cursed to have idiots as leaders and that is why Nkrumah still remains significant in our world.
Does anyone think there would be a comparison among the two men in any country aside of Ghana?

Again how much difference is between the
Indemnity Clauses and the One Party State aside from other people having the chance to ascend the throne to acquire wealth and fool about to the detriment of majority of the people,as have been the case since the overthrow of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
During his rule in Late Cote d'Ivoire, the late President Houphet Boinne(excuse my spelling, please) never stop by saying:
"He was not afraid to died, but his concerns and worry was the person who has a good balance of intuitive Senses and reasoning,to take over from him".The question is,what has become of once Petty-France(Ivory Coast)after his passing to eternity.
Nkrumah's ideas and ideals were far in advance of his generation at the time.Though he didn't not personally said that himself,I suspect that might have been the reason behind his idea of One Party State.
After the overthrow of Dr Nkrumah, what has Ghana become.
Has those Vice president been proven to put the President in order ?.
When Kofi Abrefa Busia later became the leader, what did he do on record.
He devalued the Cedis immediately,
Transfered his 1 full year's Salary in bulk
from Jan-Dec(which is not yet due)to Britain,
Expelled foreigners from Ghana, most of them from neighboring African Countries (Nigerian) etc.
What Kofi Abrefa Busia did was just what
Nelson Mandela refused to do but rather used
Common Sense approach to resolve issues.
Though that was the only sensible solution available to him,if he did not want his Country to suffer Resections and Economic Collapsed. And now we call him a hero!
So,I personally see Mandela as a Sensible person.

Mandela is endowed with a rare ability to forgive, he served 27 years in jail, became president of South Africa for only 1 term and handed over power. Sterling qualities that we can find in other African leaders.
But how does these beautiful qualities emancipates the continent from the shackles of colonialism, and develop a nation? Show me one economic developmental thing that Mandela did for South Africa, let alone the rest of the African continent?
Have you read the black Harvard professor's (Henry Gates') article that claims Ashantis traded in slaves, used the proceeds to buy gold for themselves and used the rest of the money to educate their children abroad? Oh my brother OYOKOBA, your mind need to be really washed. You are still an educated but ignorant African, like most Africans are.
1.Nkrumah knew Mandela and the ANC was an appeaser to white supremacy so refused to meet with Mandela when he visited Ghana. After 27 years of hard labor in prison, Mandela comes out waving the white flag of surrender to the racist white oppressors, even stood side by side with his white oppressor to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
2. On the night of the declaration of our independence of Ghana on March 6, 1957, Nkrumah stood on the podium and announced the freedom of the entire black race, not just that of Ghana, or Africa, but the entire black race of the world.
Nkrumah formed the Non-Aligned Movement to fight colonialism anywhere in the world by supporting every nation under colonialism at the time, and there were many, especially in Africa.
3. You talk about political prisoners under Nkrumah's rule? Of course, if anyone destabilizes or even attempt to destabilize a nation that person must be arrested and imprisoned. There is nowhere in the world that a political party can form a terrorist group for the purpose of destabilizing a nation and the government will not do anything about it, not even in the so called democratic societies.
4.Some of you opponents of Nkrumah always try to doctor the history of Ghana to favor your argument.Set the record straight that Nkrumah offered the idea of a union government to the United Party and they refused and walked out of Parliament whereby Nkrumah declared a "One Party State". The opposition was bitter because they could not defeat the CPP due to Nkrumah's organizational skills, so Kofi Abrefa Busia and J.B Danquah appraoched firs the Queen of England and the American CIA to help them overthrown Kwame Nkrumah. If you look the trend in removing African leaders from office, the west will first create a situation by supporting dissent in the particular country and use that as a pretext to overthrow the leader. They did that in The Congo to overthrow and even kill Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba using an African General Mobutu Sese Seko. They are still doing and using the same tactics today.
5. I could go on and on, but you will never accept the fact Africa's problems are that we are not united on anything for the progress of our people. South Africa under the African National Congress is now one of the leading corrupt governments in Africa. The crime rate is so high brother due to unemployment. Nothing has changed for the blacks except a few blacks siphoning and looting all the money into their private offshore accounts. The litany of the conditions prevailing in Ghana at the time that you have listed here is just the smoke the west blew into our eyes to camouflage the progress a young nation was making towards industrializing its economy. If Nkrumah succeeded in making Ghana a model of the African renaissance, the west was finished. Ghana will be drilling our own oil today with our equipment and engineers. The EO Group, consisting of President Kuffour, Edusei, and Owusu, could not have pocketed $200 million dollars by themselves. That could never had happened under Kwame Nkrumah.

Nelson Mandela when was released from prison by his captives, did not act upon any form of vengeance, even he went as far as to appointed he who jailed him as
a Deputy President in his administration, he appointed Nkata Freedom Fighter his bitter political opponent as his Minister of Foreign Affairs and he even extended his invitation to his Prison Warder when
he was being inaugurated as First African President of South Africa,
but Nkrumah what did he do, he arrested and imprisoned all his political opponents until some of them even met their death while in prison,
that is the difference between Nkrumah

In the international community even in Africa opinion is widely divided over the palce of Nkrumah becuase of his suspected sabotage of other leader as he gave Ghana's moneys in support of only fatcions in a ny given country which supported his communist tendencyies. He did not even support ANC but PAC because PAC was not willing to admit whites and was more pro Soviet and refused to support Mnadela That is why Mandela went to Cote d'Ivoire first before coming to Ghana because Houphouet Boighy supported ANC AND NOT PAC be Ivory Copat was not pro Communist. My friend, dont you think that with the shameful level of development of our country and continent we should rather be thinking about who can raise us from the depths of poverty rather than how long people stay in power?
Any African or Black man would be proud to be compared to Robert Mugabe who is the only African leader who is fighting to keep the lands and the wealth of his country for the citizens of his country.
Brainwashed feeble-minded Africans like you Ewurade Kasa who cannot think for themselves or see anything in this world until your evil oppressors tell you what to think or see, of course will not see any merit in the kind of Africans who have achieved the little that we have gained for Africa so far.

He wakes up in the morning and only think about having his tea and cheese to eat. That is all they care about. After 100 years of colonial rule Gold Coast had only a few elementary schools in the country. Let me ask Ewurade Kasa where he went to secondary school and most like he attended one of the several schools Nkrumah built.Ghanaian children are still going to school under trees 56 after our independence. Ewurade Kasda, the very fact that you can post your illiterate comments on Ghanaweb means that at least you are internet literate. Please, I therefore beg you to use the same medium to find out a little bit more about the socio-economic conditions of South Africa. If you can, you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that the economic conditions of the Black majority population in South Africa begun to get even worse and the settler white racists gained even much greater socio-economic advances when Mandela was made President till the present.
If you are really an African, you are a disgrace to the African race because your ignorance continues to justify the problems that undermines our progress.
Nelson Mandela is not really a bad person as such but his only real achievement was that he spent 27 years in jail and allowed his evil oppressors to gain even greater advantages over him and his people when they finally decided to release him at the time he had become a broken man. That is why for the first time in human history, we have white people and their Black puppets praising Mandela.

What Mandela stood for was clearly captured in the S African Ambassador’s speech at his memorial service in Ghana where he said Mandela's dream is for equality, human rights for all races, children and women, and the abolishment of sexism in all its forms in S Africa which he by and large succeeded.

JB, please tell us or explain to us the specific area in which Nelson Mandela excelled. As far as some of us are concerned, he was just simply part of the group of Africans in South Africa who were fighting for independence of their country from genocidal tyrants, murderers and oppressors. Mandela was not a particularly outstanding personality until he was jailed. And for your information whilst he was in jail for the 27 years leading to the independence of South Africa, many of his Comrade colleagues contnued the struggle under the supervision, direction and assistance of people like Kwame Nkrumah, Fidel Castro as well as the then Soviet Union and China.
It was these same people and countries who made so much noise in the world about Mandela and the Apartheid system. And again, it was them who provided all the wherewithal for the Black African liberation fighters to continue the struggle that America in particular, which was fiercely against the release of Mandela and also Black African rule, was forced to give in and tell their racist white brothers and sisters in South Africa to release Mandela.
The comparison betweenn mandela and Nkrumah has come in because the global white imperialist hegemony want to use Mandela as the paragon or icon of excellence of what African leaders should be like or behave like, so that with weak African leaders, they can continue to rip us all off like they are continuing to do in South Africa. It will not happen.
Much as we are not opposed to Mandela, we must expose this fraudulent attempt to raise him above his station in this yet another imperialist scheme to emasculate African leadership in the same way as they did to Mandela in prison before they released him so that they can use him to continue to exploit us more and more whilst we get poorer and poorer in spite of all our abundant raw materials.

In many respect the western leaders found in Mandela a compromised African leader. Mandela was a great liberator but left the core business of delivering the greater mass of the African people from humiliation in their own land virtually untouched. Mugabe, with all the economic circumscription, appears to be doing well building authentic Black empowerment in Zimbabwe. Friends it must be obvious that Mandela traded too much of his people rights for true freedom in South Africa

The reality that most fellow Ghanaians are missing is: anyone courted by the imperialist West had always been someone who sold his nation for a pittance. Mandela was the hero of the west because he accepted their terms, which had rendered South Africa politically black but economically white. The person who wields economic power, wields the true political power. Blacks in South Africa are not better now than they were under apatheid. They may be politically free, but the meaning of freedom is relative and subjective. Kwame Nkrumah was a true Pan-African, a man who fought to liberate the whole of Africa. The man who built the international students hostel for students from South Africa, Zimbabwe and other African coutries with full scholarships to study in Ghana. Was he a friend of the West, or celebrities, oh hell not. There's no comparison between Kwame Nkrumah and Mandela, that's why the African Union had honoured Nkrumah with a statue at their headquarters. Kwame Nkrumah still towers over any dead or living Blackman. Not even Obama.

OYOKOBA, this is one of few occasions I disagree with you. You don't have to be pro CPP or NDC to recognize what Nkrumah did for the Black race, Africa and Ghana in particular, his socialist economic policies not withstanding. People like Dr. King, Mandela and others were emboldened after Ghana's successful run for independence, also if you consider the amount of economic and political capital he expended on African Independence.
For the 'total liberation of the Black Race and Africa' in particular Dr. King and Mandela share a distant second to Kwame 'Ahoohuwaa'.

I put it to you that it's your hypocrisy - in the face of the historical record of the Danquah-Busia tradition's opposition to the African Liberation struggle and its most shameful, treasonous collaboration with Southern African white racists. Busia was financially backed by these racists in what is now Zambia and he also met secretly with Botha in Cote d'Ivoire while Mandela was wasting away in jail. Tell us just one benefit of Busia's dialogue with the devil? How many ANC freedom fighters were released as a result of Busia's betrayal disguised as "dialogue"? Did Busia's betrayal stop the executions, torture, imprisonment of SA freedom fighters and even peaceful activists? Did it stop Apartheid SA's military aggression against frontline African states or the assassination of ANC members living in exile? Shame unto Danquah-Busia alliance with Apartheid and imperialism!

The harder they come the harder they fall. The enemies of unity of Africa and social economic emancipation shamelessly tried to take advantage to use Nelson Mandela's funeral to distort political history of Africa and possibly create confusion in our mind set as to who is the greatest African leader of the 21st century.
Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah take his rightful place among leaders like Abraham Lincoln of America and Wilson Churchill of the United Kingdom as the undisputed greatest leader of Africa.
Certainly, Osagyefo is the unchangeable tall pillar of hope and light of Africa even long after his death. Nelson Mandela could be respected as the last of the reliably trustworthy great African leader but I'm afraid not the greatest leader in the 21st century of Africa, he is not.
Our great heroes like the Lumumbers, Steph Bikoes, Amilcar Cabrals, Muarmar Gaddafis, Chris Hannis and co they murdered in cold blood are those we buried with pain still burning within our hearts.
Osagyefo was the only African leader who created a special outfit close to his heart under presidential supervision and scrutiny, the Bureau of African Affairs with Mr. Kofi Batsa as its head from where financial and material support was sent to most African states which were under colonial white oppression and domination, including all the South African states, now SADEC.
Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah delegated most of his time and political attentions to the support for the total freedoms of Africa. Strongly proposing for Africa Unity, Africa without boundaries, Africa High Command, Africa common currency, Africa common market and the common Africa common communication which are all adopted and being used by the European countries today in a Union.
Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah won the first African country south of the Sahara independence (Ghana) and never failed on his promise to his fellow members who included Jomo Kenyatas, Julius Nyereres, Dr. Kaundas, Awolowos and many of the Pan-Africa Student Movement memberships who eventually by the support of Osagyefo won their countries freedom.
Africa and world leaders should just think about the enormous energy, the huge moral and spiritual support Osgayefo Kwame Nkrumah gave against all the attacks by local enemies and internal traitors sponsored by foreign imperialists on his person yet resisted to support the liberation struggles in Africa for total political ans social economic emancipation.
Nelson Mandela himself on his visit to Ghana, paid a profound ans respected tribute to the greatest among Africa leaders when he visited Ghana as President of South Africa at Nkrumahs historical burial grounds with a humble solemned respect and we should not allow these same international political charlatans and cacophonouses crooks to use Nelson Mandela's death to create enemity among us when they have branded Mandela a terrorist and call for him to be hanged.
Asawaba! Uhuru! Amanla Ngewethu.

To Graça Machel and the Mandela family; to President Zuma and members of the government; to heads of state and government, past and present; distinguished guests - it is a singular honour to be with you today, to celebrate a life unlike any other. To the people of South Africa – people of every race and walk of life – the world thanks you for sharing Nelson Mandela with us. His struggle was your struggle. His triumph was your triumph. Your dignity and hope found expression in his life, and your freedom, your democracy is his cherished legacy.
It is hard to eulogise any man – to capture in words not just the facts and the dates that make a life, but the essential truth of a person – their private joys and sorrows; the quiet moments and unique qualities that illuminate someone's soul. How much harder to do so for a giant of history, who moved a nation toward justice, and in the process moved billions around the world.
Born during world war one, far from the corridors of power, a boy raised herding cattle and tutored by elders of his Thembu tribe – Madiba would emerge as the last great liberator of the 20th century. Like Gandhi, he would lead a resistance movement – a movement that at its start held little prospect of success. Like King, he would give potent voice to the claims of the oppressed, and the moral necessity of racial justice. He would endure a brutal imprisonment that began in the time of Kennedy and Khrushchev, and reached the final days of the Cold War. Emerging from prison, without force of arms, he would – like Lincoln – hold his country together when it threatened to break apart. Like America's founding fathers, he would erect a constitutional order to preserve freedom for future generations – a commitment to democracy and rule of law ratified not only by his election, but by his willingness to step down from power.
Given the sweep of his life, and the adoration that he so rightly earned, it is tempting then to remember Nelson Mandela as an icon, smiling and serene, detached from the tawdry affairs of lesser men. But Madiba himself strongly resisted such a lifeless portrait. Instead, he insisted on sharing with us his doubts and fears; his miscalculations along with his victories. "I'm not a saint," he said, "unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying."
It was precisely because he could admit to imperfection – because he could be so full of good humour, even mischief, despite the heavy burdens he carried – that we loved him so. He was not a bust made of marble; he was a man of flesh and blood – a son and husband, a father and a friend. That is why we learned so much from him; that is why we can learn from him still. For nothing he achieved was inevitable. In the arc of his life, we see a man who earned his place in history through struggle and shrewdness; persistence and faith. He tells us what's possible not just in the pages of dusty history books, but in our own lives as well.
Mandela showed us the power of action; of taking risks on behalf of our ideals. Perhaps Madiba was right that he inherited, "a proud rebelliousness, a stubborn sense of fairness" from his father. Certainly he shared with millions of black and coloured South Africans the anger born of, "a thousand slights, a thousand indignities, a thousand unremembered moments … a desire to fight the system that imprisoned my people".
But like other early giants of the ANC – the Sisulus and Tambos – Madiba disciplined his anger; and channelled his desire to fight into organisation, and platforms, and strategies for action, so men and women could stand-up for their dignity. Moreover, he accepted the consequences of his actions, knowing that standing up to powerful interests and injustice carries a price. "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination," he said at his 1964 trial. "I've cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."
Mandela taught us the power of action, but also ideas; the importance of reason and arguments; the need to study not only those you agree with, but those who you don't. He understood that ideas cannot be contained by prison walls, or extinguished by a sniper's bullet. He turned his trial into an indictment of apartheid because of his eloquence and passion, but also his training as an advocate. He used decades in prison to sharpen his arguments, but also to spread his thirst for knowledge to others in the movement. And he learned the language and customs of his oppressor so that one day he might better convey to them how their own freedom depended upon his.
Mandela demonstrated that action and ideas are not enough; no matter how right, they must be chiselled into laws and institutions. He was practical, testing his beliefs against the hard surface of circumstance and history. On core principles he was unyielding, which is why he could rebuff offers of conditional release, reminding the Apartheid regime that, "prisoners cannot enter into contracts". But as he showed in painstaking negotiations to transfer power and draft new laws, he was not afraid to compromise for the sake of a larger goal. And because he was not only a leader of a movement, but a skilful politician, the Constitution that emerged was worthy of this multiracial democracy; true to his vision of laws that protect minority as well as majority rights, and the precious freedoms of every South African.
Finally, Mandela understood the ties that bind the human spirit. There is a word in South Africa – Ubuntu – that describes his greatest gift: his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others, and caring for those around us. We can never know how much of this was innate in him, or how much of was shaped and burnished in a dark, solitary cell. But we remember the gestures, large and small - introducing his jailors as honoured guests at his inauguration; taking the pitch in a Springbok uniform; turning his family's heartbreak into a call to confront HIV/AIDS – that revealed the depth of his empathy and understanding. He not only embodied Ubuntu; he taught millions to find that truth within themselves. It took a man like Madiba to free not just the prisoner, but the jailor as well; to show that you must trust others so that they may trust you; to teach that reconciliation is not a matter of ignoring a cruel past, but a means of confronting it with inclusion, generosity and truth. He changed laws, but also hearts.
For the people of South Africa, for those he inspired around the globe – Madiba's passing is rightly a time of mourning, and a time to celebrate his heroic life. But I believe it should also prompt in each of us a time for self-reflection. With honesty, regardless of our station or circumstance, we must ask: how well have I applied his lessons in my own life?
It is a question I ask myself – as a man and as a president. We know that like South Africa, the United States had to overcome centuries of racial subjugation. As was true here, it took the sacrifice of countless people - known and unknown - to see the dawn of a new day. Michelle and I are the beneficiaries of that struggle. But in America and South Africa, and countries around the globe, we cannot allow our progress to cloud the fact that our work is not done. The struggles that follow the victory of formal equality and universal franchise may not be as filled with drama and moral clarity as those that came before, but they are no less important. For around the world today, we still see children suffering from hunger, and disease; run-down schools, and few prospects for the future. Around the world today, men and women are still imprisoned for their political beliefs; and are still persecuted for what they look like, or how they worship, or who they love.
We, too, must act on behalf of justice. We, too, must act on behalf of peace. There are too many of us who happily embrace Madiba's legacy of racial reconciliation, but passionately resist even modest reforms that would challenge chronic poverty and growing inequality. There are too many leaders who claim solidarity with Madiba's struggle for freedom, but do not tolerate dissent from their own people. And there are too many of us who stand on the sidelines, comfortable in complacency or cynicism when our voices must be heard.
The questions we face today – how to promote equality and justice; to uphold freedom and human rights; to end conflict and sectarian war – do not have easy answers. But there were no easy answers in front of that child in Qunu. Nelson Mandela reminds us that it always seems impossible until it is done. South Africa shows us that is true. South Africa shows us we can change. We can choose to live in a world defined not by our differences, but by our common hopes. We can choose a world defined not by conflict, but by peace and justice and opportunity.
We will never see the likes of Nelson Mandela again. But let me say to the young people of Africa, and young people around the world - you can make his life's work your own. Over thirty years ago, while still a student, I learned of Mandela and the struggles in this land. It stirred something in me. It woke me up to my responsibilities - to others, and to myself - and set me on an improbable journey that finds me here today. And while I will always fall short of Madiba's example, he makes me want to be better. He speaks to what is best inside us. After this great liberator is laid to rest; when we have returned to our cities and villages, and rejoined our daily routines, let us search then for his strength - for his largeness of spirit - somewhere inside ourselves. And when the night grows dark, when injustice weighs heavy on our hearts, or our best laid plans seem beyond our reach - think of Madiba, and the words that brought him comfort within the four walls of a cell:
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
What a great soul it was. We will miss him deeply. May God bless the memory of Nelson Mandela. May God bless the people of South Africa.

What at all did Mandela do for Africa. He sat down for Mugabe and his country to be destroyed by the West. He did not criticise the slaughter of Gaddafi by the West. He appeased the Whites by forgiving them but he did not forgive his two former wives. He had not vision for Africa and in fact he was a crap president. He could not change the lives of his own black South Africans. The whites got richer and the blacks got poorer. He was a stooge for the West. Ask yourself why president Putin did not attend his funeral. He knew this man was a puppet adored by the West. Mandela could not even help his neighbour Zimbabwe when the West gang up against them. He forgot the support Mugabe gave to ANC when they were banned from South Africa. He forgot the number of times Zimbabwe was bombed for helping ANC. President Samora Mashal was killed by South Africa and all he could do was to marry his wife. Let face it this man is not a saint. He contributed nothing to Africa other than becoming a president of his country. Being in prison for poltical stance is nothing new. Aun San suu Chi was in prison for many years. Some even died of the course. Lumumba,Malcom X and Dr King died for their people.

We are talking about great leaders in which one achieved higher than the other. Have you read about BBC poll 2000? Nkrumah was declared as the best African leader in terms of achievement. Mandela was around but he did not get it. We are not compering countries. In this world people sing your praises only when you are dead.
Gorbachov brought pease to this world and liberated East Germany. He also gave independent to former Soviet countries and transformed Russia. He brought cold war to and end by signing treaties for world peace. He is alive now but nobody is singing his praises. The day he dies you will hear what the whole world will say.

It is like the non-achieving kid who always points to his father's achievement but not his own accomplishment....It really does not matter whether its Nkrumah or Mandela....it is how the individual country build on the achievement....If racial war breaks out in South Africa in 5 or 10 years, it will negate all that Mandela is said to have achieved....that is my point...long live Africa

Nkrumah foughtagainst colonial rule and thus gave us our independence. South Africa has been independent since 1910, Mandela fought against apartheid or white supremacist rule in South Africa, more like Martin Luther King in the USA. So their trajectory is quite different.
Nkrumah is the greatest leader from Africa and forged the path for the independence of the rest of black Africa. Mandela is our present day light showing our current crop of leaders how to rule in our present day independent Africa.
Believing in ourselves and living above corruption which is lacking in virtually all black African leaders. Look at how our infrastructure lacks behind but we have funds for useless visciuos election campaigns. My take

The two were Africa's two greatest prophets.
The difference is that while Mandela was a prophet accepted and revered by his people, Nkrumah was a prophet rejected and disgraced by an ungrateful country ..... In a way, just like Jesus was rejected and disgraced by ungrateful Israel. Had Ghanaians allowed the great Nkrumah to die honorably in his own country the world would have accorded him the praise and honour he deserved. It is interesting to note that notwithstanding his rejection by Ghanaians, he was adjudged the greatest African of the past millennium and his statue rightly towers over the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Shame on Ghana, the ungrateful country.

Whereas both Nkrumah and Mandela were freedom fighters that helped to liberate their people, they operated in different eras and under different circumstances. Mandela's era was paved by the successes of Nkrumah and earlier freedom fighters, however, Mandela and other southern African leaders were faced with whiteb settler domineers who were entrenched and philosophicall were not and had no intention to leave or move from the Southern Africas. Hence, the liberation of South Africa, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and even Kenya were more bloody than Gold Coast (Ghana). Under the circumstace where we had a white dominant settlers who had no place to depart to, Mandela's racial reconciliation policy was more welcoming and solidified the South Africa industrially and politically than Nkrumah and others whose philosophies were Africanization of their nations. In the longer run South Africa, Namibia, Losotho, Kenya are better with political and industrial democracies than Ghana and others. Hence, Mandela inherited a situation that required a much more bloddy revolution and guerrila fighting than Ghana. Today South Africa is more of a tecnological partner to Ghana even though we were first to achieve independence. They are both liberators of their nations with differing nationalist ideas.

I rest my case....................
Mandela stood up against white oppression for as long as he could and eventually; he humanly tolerated everything just for the sake of peace in only South Africa without considering the dignity of all Africans against racism, oppression and mental enslavement.
He eventually kowtowed for white minority say but, black majority rule. Which has kept many black South Africans still in bondage today.
They are still suffering as we write.
He only saved South Africa from bloodshed not from white oppression. It still goes on there..............
Osagyefo was against racism, colonialism, imperialism, oppression of the black race and believed that we can handle our own affairs, hence his overthrow to bring in puppets of imperialism and colonialism.
Osagyefo stood for the dignity of ALL AFRICANS and laid positive foundations to be built upon.....but unfortunately, the AFROPEANS amongst us, have destroyed and derailed all his positive efforts and achievements; and as such, we sadly remain mentally enslaved. Hence, selling ourselves to all foreigners and continue to beg and import toothpicks from China??????
It's so obvious to all AFRICANS, what Nkrumah stood for.....AFRICAN UNITY AND BLACK DIGNITY! PERIOD!

Mandela was a hero who fouhgt against apartheid in his Country, and became an icon in the world, but Mandela could have use his noble status to help the people in the towship, there is still racism in South Africa, the blacks are still suffering. The good economy of South Africa has nothing to do with Mandela. It is still the white minority who controls the Financial network. Mandela fought before going to prison, but when released did les in terms of human rights and dignity to the laymen and women in South Africa.
I've stayed in most African Countries, most African nationals will never compare the 2. Mandela is an anti-apartheid icon, but never fought for African dignity in any international circles when released while NKRUMAH, maybe with dictator character fought against imperialism and to implement the dignity of Africans. NKRUMAH IS THE GREATEST MAN OF AFRICA while MANDELA is an anti-apartheid icon who reconciliated for peace IN HIS COUNTRY South Africa(and nothing to Africans). NKRUMAH INITIATED or INVENTED AFRICAN LIBERATION AND AFRICAN UNITY while MANDELA continued with the spirit of NKRUMAH to fihgt against apartheid in South Africa.

MADIBA TATA showed the way for the emancipation of the oppresed in both SA and world. Hence the world has lost a light that shone on the oppressed. How popular was Nkrumah at the time of his removal from office? Do not forget how Ghanaians celebrated his removal from office clearly attests to the factthat he was nobody in his own country. Mandela like Princess Diana have great impact with their lives on millions and millions of people all over the world. MADIBA IS FAR GREATER THAN Nkrumah. THE SELFISH...WAS BROGHT INTO HELP WHAT HAS BEEN INITIATED BY THE THOUGHTFUL ONES...BACK-STABBED THEM...ACCUSED THEM OF BEEN TRAITORS AND FALSELY TOLD THE MASSES AS THEY NOT BEEN PATROTIC TO THE CAUSE (WHEN STRATEGICALLY THEY KNEW WHAT WAS TO BE DONE & HAD A GAME PLAN WITH A ROAD PLAN TO A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH)...DECEIVED THE INGNORANT & ILLITERATE MASSES TO GO FOR HIS PUPULIST IDEAS.....AFTER WINNING ... ABANDONED THE CAUSE TO DEVELOP HIS NATION AS A MODEL FOR AFRICA.....NAIVELY RUSHED TO TAKE UP THE CAUSE OF THE CONTINENT AFRICA...IN THE CAUSE OF THAT WASTED HIS MOTHERLAND GHANA'S RESOURCES WITHOUT ANY SUCCESS TO ACHIEVE NOTHING FOR AFRICA & GHANA...TODATE 2013 AFRICA STILL IN THE STRUGLE TO ACHIEVE ONE AFRICA AS A NATION..IMPOSED ONE PARTY STATE, ELECTED HIMSELF AS LIFE PRESIDENT OF GHANA....CAUSING CHAOS AND STRUGGLE AGAINST ONE PARTY STATE/FIGHT TO SURVIVE AGAINST THAT.... IN THE LONG RUN GOT OVERTHROWN FROM OFFICE......NOW THE POLITICAL PARTY HE BUILT IS IN SHAMBLES, HIS OPPONENTS HE IMPRISONED AND KILLED'S PARTY UNDER THEIR IDEOLOGY IS GROWING STRONGER & STRONGER .........THE NATION HE RUSHED TO GAIN INDEPENDENCE FOR GHANA & AFRICA HE TRIED TO INCLUDE WITHOUT ANY STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN INTO A SUSTAINABLE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT AND UNITY GOAL IS STILL IN THE STRUGGLE TO GAIN INDEPENDENCE FROM THE SHACKLES OF NEO-COLONIALISM DOMINATION AND SUPPRESSION.
WHO SHOULD BE JUDGED AS THE GREATEST AMONG THE 2 DESCRIPTIONS ABOVE??????

Nkrumah coined the term neocolonialism more than50 years ago. He stood on the shoulders of other great African forebears to project the Black Star across the globe and far across time. Mandela stood on the shoulders of great Africans of old, but lived the life of forgiveness - an essential building block for peace. Nkrumah sowed the seeds of African advancement by creating and inspiring a critical mass of leader liberators, Mandela included.

Ghana was emancipated politically long before South Africa, and Nkrumah was the spearhead. Nkrumah is a pathfinder (Osabarimah - master of the forest - trailblazer). The third verse of our national anthem reads: Raise high the flag of Ghana
And one for African advance
Black Star of hope and honour to all who thirst for liberty
Where the banner of Ghana freely flies
May the way to freedom truly lie
Arise, arise oh sons of Ghanaland
And under God, march on forever more.
Ankrumah saw accross the parapet, great Africans emerging on all fronts and in all fields of endeavour, including Nelson Mandela. Nkrumaism is an ideology in itself- an inner guide and poise for the proud African. Mandela's example is a way of live - choosing a path to peace even with oppressors.

I think is useless for these comparison to even start just after a half baked African, Obama spoke out of momentous sentiments. It is clear that Obama is very ignorant on and about Africa and issues that has to do with our history, politics and social well being, because he is not one of us and of course considers himself as such. No African after Marcus Garvey has ever walk the surface of the earth coming from Africa is greater than the Osagyefo, not because he is a Ghanaian but that is the fact.

Your comparison are like Is the type writer better than the desktop? Note: Each was the best at its era and each was useful for the purpose.Nkrumah was also granted the accolade as the best in his time. Mandela went to see Nkrumah because of his greatness. Nkrumah was not alive to see Mandela Leaders like Obama visited Mandela and made that comment. Both Nkrumah and Mandela had their weaknesses, each contributed to the eveolution of the Africa. None is better than the other and non towers above the other.

MANDELA WAS MOTIVATED BY NKRUMAH AS HE STATED IN HIS BOOK 'LONG WALK TO FREEDOM PAGE 279.
ANC AS A PARTY LOOKED AT KWAME NKRUMAH FOR THE STRUGGLE TO THE EXTENT THAT OR TAMBO OPENED AN ANC OFFICE IN ACCRA UNDER THEPOWER OF NKRUMAH
MANDELA AND OTHERS WERE IMPRISONED BECAUSE AFRICANS DID NOT UNDERSTANT NKRUMAH.
MANDELA IS CONTEMPORARY AND MOST YOUTH DID NOT SEE, HEARED OF, AND READ ABOUT OSAGYEFO DR. KWAME NKRUMAH.
MANDELA TOWED THE LINE OF BRITAIN AND AMERICA WITHOUT ANY SIDE LOOKS SO THEY MADE MANDELA THAT POPULAR BUT NKRUMAH WATCHED ALL AROUND BEFORE HANDLING THE WEST SO THEY DIDNT LIKE HIM.
THE TWI SPEAKING GHANAIANS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF BRITAIN AND AMERICA DESTROYED NKRUMAH BECAUSE OF HIS VISIONARY PROWESS WHICH NO OTHER AFRICAN LEADER HAS EVER COME CLOSE.

Nkrumah had done more for Africa and the black race than Mandela. This is a fact. It is also a fact that he singlehanded opened the floodgate for Africa emancipation through which also South Africa passed. The fact that no one mentioned him in Mandela's tributes was due to that fact. He was a hated man because he showed the way of freeing the black race from white domination across Africa. Not only that, he proposed practical ideas and strategies which could be used to make Africa progress. Most of these ideas have been adopted by Europe. Mandela was great in two aspects; he stoically absorbed incarceration for his belief and reconciliation advocate. But, let us face the fact; what else could he do in prison or outside it? War would have been suicidal as the enemy enjoyed superiority in armament. Gorilla warfare would take years to achieve its aim with untold loss of life. So, all in all, forgiveness was the only solution to getting power back to the black people in South Africa, ultimately.
