Mandela was already burnt out when he got out of jail, so what could have been the impetus for hanging on?
Granted he was selfless and gave his all to his country, our lesser, self-seeking not so genteel lowlifes can learn a thing or two about human dignity and responsibility. May he rest in peace. Mandela is the greatest.

The truth must be told, anokware John Mahama cannot do the job.
This guy came to the job offering no real vision for the nation, instead he only served up absolute nonsense - Ede be keke - which for some, loosely translates into just existing at the wheels, not knowing which direction to go. To add insult to injury, he is telling us that, like a car, he is only in the first gear in a four-year term, so we can expect to see a fourth gear only in the fourth year. To hear that allegory from a guy and a president who had been a vice-president for the previous four years, and claims that because of the ill-health of Atta Mess, he John Mahama was really the one in charge behind the scenes, then we have reasons to conclude nothing good or extraordinary can be expected that is different from what we have seen from the last four years. The value is going to be the same, and corruption is going to consume all of us under Mahama. Our people tell us, 'Edwa beso'a efiri anopa', to wit, one can gauge the prospects of a good market day from the signs the morning activities project. Right now the country is sinking fast from all reliable indicators. In the last four years, the cedi has depreciated a whole 100 percent under Mahama and Atta Mess. What other assurances are we waiting for? To be hit on the head with bricks?
Look, John Mahama is not cut for prime time, he does not know how, and all his protestations are excuses to cover incompetence and corruption in high places, of which him and his party are direct beneficiaries. What the fuck is Ede be keke? Nonsense!

Nelson Mandela can not be compared to any World leader let alone an African one. I was moved to tears when I saw former President Mbeki on BBC news saying that Nelson Mandela gave him the task of assembling the cabinet when Nelson Mandela was the President elect. The wisdom Nelson Mandela displayed by asking him to leave the position of Vice President blank was amazing. He told him that after consulting with President Kaunda, he had slotted him as vice President.
African leaders should learn from this man or if they can not do that, strive to put bitter divisions which engulfs our politics thus depriving the poor citizenry as victims to one side. If an opponent has a good idea to improve the country embrace it. In opposition, when the Government in power does something worthy of praise say so.It does not make you any a lesser personality but elevates you a higher height. NELSON MANDELA REST IN PEACE!

I still believe the greatest African and Ghanaian of our generation was Kwame Nkrumah...his impact was more far reaching than Mandela's.....While Mandela avoided bloodbath that would have occurred in South Africa, Nkrumah was instrumental in liberating most of the continent....That said, none of the ghanaian leaders after Nkrumah would be so dedicated to the national cause to delegate the assembling of cabinet to another person...Mbeki was on the outside while Mandela was a lifer with Mbeki's dad so was more familiar available talent than Mandela was. I believe that was the reason behind asking Mbeki to assemble the cabinet...It is not like the government in ghana presently where beauty and hip-size are criteria to get into the cabinet...How low has Nkrumah's ghana sank.....Do not forget Jerry Rawlings who came to power through the barrel of the gun was seriously campaigning for his wife to succeed him.....He sees Ghana as his personal property..compare rawlings to the selflessness of Mandela

What is so great about serving one tern in office? Personally I think that it is a defeatist attitude and failure on Mandelas part to turn his back on his people at a time that they needed him most.
The reason why all the imperialists and their drooling subordinates across Africa are pointing to this insignificant factor and the fact that he was a peaceful man, attests to the fact that he achieved virtually nothing for the Black people of South Africa and nothing at all for Africa. They still idolize him because the global white imperialist media has propped Mandela up as the model African leader who will not publicly censure the ills of the continuing exploitation and oppression of Africa by others. As any discerning African knows, this is the only kind of Black man that white can live with. The ones who will meekly turn the other cheek when the white man spits on him, slaps him, kicks him in the groin, jails him for demanding the most basic human rights and even lynches him.
The poverty of the majority Black people started to worsen even before he Mandela decided for whatever reasons, to step down. This trend has continued to worsen ever since, whilst the prosperity of the white minority has increased exponentially.
It is interesting to note that those, like Nkrumah, Castro, China and the European Communist Block who provided material, financial, military, diplomatic and the moral support which he Mandela and all the other liberation fighters in southern Africa stood on to become men of stature are being denied their due.
Can someone please tell me what all the fuss about Nelson is about?

You are the first person who I have heard explaining the reasons why Mandela stepped down after his first term. I do not know hwether that explanation is a figment of your own imagination or a confidential slip from Mandela himself.
Please I asked if anybody can tell me what makes Mandela a great man and whilst denying me an answer you claim that I am being controversial. Why?
It seems that you are just another poor victim of the manipulative western media. Their enemies are your enemies and their great men are yur great men. You have become their puppet. What is this other rubbish about about Mugabe that you threw in? What do you independently know about Mugabe which is not from the racist BBC? Go and check out how Mugabe has survived the western subversion of the Zimbabwean economy into one of the most prosperous in Africa by Africans.
If Cuba, China, Iran and Russia all see Mandela as a great man of an unimaginable magnitude, they have every right to do so because they made him so against those who labeled Mandela a terrorist, a communist and an evil enemy that must be killed.
Wake Bro' its getting late in the day.

Abuzzo,I hope during the time of Nelson Mandela's trial and imprisonment either you were a kid or did not know what was going on in African political scene. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah and some African the leaders (except Kofi Busia, and West African Francophone leaders, led by Felix Houphouet Boigny) spearheaded the fight and campaign tooth and nail to seek the release Mandela whenever there was any international conferences and on the floor of the United Nations Assembly. Osagyefo led the fight to expel South Africa White government from the British Commonwealth of nations. Many South Africa young men and women such as Steve Biko visited Ghana on orientation trainings to prepare them for their struggles against the white Apartheid system. So Abuzzo, or whatever your name may be, you do not know the immense help Africa gave to Mandela and his fellow freedom fighters. It is very ironic to hear that four (4) former U.S. Presidents are trooping to Johanesburg to attend Mandela's funeral. It is nothing but America's guilt because according to News Dispatches at that time,it was the US CIA which revealed the hideouts to the for him and his comrades to be arrested and their subsequent trial and imprisonments. Kofi Annan has no wisdom of any kind to offer Africans. Even when he was Gen Secretary of the UN what did he achieve for Ghana and Africa? Let us wake up and stop behaving like the proverbial 'stupid Africans' that others call us simply because we refuse to think.
Was it not Kofi Annan who was UN General Secretary when the US bluffed their way through the UN and accused Iraq of possessing weapons of mass destruction and in the process killing over 2 million innocent Iraqis and more still counting? Kofi Annans failure to act in the Rwanda case that led to the deaths of so many hundreds of thousands of people is also well documented and known.
I suspect that you admire Kofi Annan only and simply because he became the first African to become UN general Secretary. But what he did with that job for Africa is another question that must be asked.
I would be happy if anyone can put facts and not sentiments down about the real achievements - if any, of both Kofi Annan and Mandela. It seems to me that Im missing something that everbody knows about.

But one very fact we shouldn't & wouldn't forget Mandela is that he sacrificed his life for his folks & focused mainly internally down south there rather than the entire African continent, despite the fact that he was a Pan Africanist & a Freedom Fighter.
On the otherside of the coin is our own Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah who was more external focused to liberate the entire African continent, the entire Black World in the Diaspora & pride for the black identity but not only internal struggle for independence & freedom for his folks in our homeland Ghana.
Just match these two late great African leaders, two of them fit perfectly on a single African coin- head & tail.
But which of the African countries will take the lead to come out with such a historical & memorial money unit; perhaps Ghana can pioneer that initiative.

THANKS TO THE TIRELESS EFFORTS OF JJ AND WIFE KONADU WHO HELPED TO KICK OUT KUFUOR AND HIS NPP.
THE NPP WILL STAY IN OPPOSITION FOR A VERY LONG TIME. CRIMINALS AND TRIBAL BIGOTS!!!
KUFOUR, IN A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO OWN GHANA'S CRUDE OIL WITH HIS FAMILY AND OTHER ASANTE TRIBES PEOPLE, "PLANTED" THAT "EO GROUP" IN PLACE TO IMPLEMENT THAT WICKED DREAM OF KUFUOR AND HIS CLIQUE OF THIEVES.
NOT SUCCESSFUL IN HIS BID TO OWN GHANA'S CRUDE OIL WITH THE "EO GROUP", KUFUOR FORMED A FUCKING COMMISSION TO AWARD HIM "KILLER" EX-GRATIA BENEFITS FOR LIFE TILL THY KINGDOM COME WHILE MANY POOR GHANAIAN CHILDREN CONTINUED TO GO TO SCHOOL UNDER TREES.
