The people should not allow anybody- politician- to form a coalition government in our land. It would end up becoming a 'COUNTRY CLUB' for the big men.
When we talk about "winner-takes-all," most people make it to seem that it is wrong for the elected party to use its own members to rule the Nation, and at all cost should bring on board other party members. That is silly. As long as the party could get honest people to do the work, why bother bringing in someone from another party. Not that NDC as a party does not have the members to bring development in the country, but rather it is because of wickedness and vindictiveness that is why they are not bringing in people Spio, Botchway, and others to come and help them but rather using babies with sharpened teeth.
Fact is, the constitution needs to be changed to allow the people to elect their own Regional and DCE leaders. That is the first thing to think of if we don't want the winner-takes-it-all. I don't see any sense in NPP or JAK choosing a leader for the Voltarians who voted over 90% for the opposition and likewise Mahama imposing his minister on Ashanti Region. This is common sense; if the Regional minister failed to perform, the blame will not put on the doorsteps of the President. The people will remove him or her and that will force that leader to perform.
Unfortunately, because of "jobs for the boys and girlfriends," no party is willing to suggest that. And now they come with this senseless talks about coalition government. In the end, people might as well forget to vote since it would "left hand washes the right hand and right hand washes the left hand." Who would have raised anything about GYEEDA, SADA, FORTIX and the rest of the rot going on.
The people should resist this senseless talk.

I cannot believe a Political Scientist is making such a dangerous suggestion. First, there are no conditions for a coalition government in Ghana. One party has a clear majority in the Legislature and the same party holds the Executive. For the two reasons, there is no reason whatsoever for a coalition government in Ghana. He should study Political Science well and not make unscientific suggestion.
Second, NDC and NPP at the moment are at each other's throat that make the conditions are remotely suitable for them to come together to form a coalition government. Just look at what happened in Parliament yesterday. Second, there is too much corruption, particularly within the Executive arm of governance. That requires a strong Legislature and particularly, an active opposition to be a check on the Executive. For the two leading parties to enter into a coalition government is to give a free licence to the two main parties as well as the Executive and Legislature to create, loot and share.
This suggestion is daft and should be treated with contempt that it deserves and consigned to the dust bins of political obituary.

Western democracies have established strong institutions that generally do not permit corruption on the large-scale that is rife with the system in Ghana and elsewhere in the 3rd World. Mr Jonah knows this too all well as a distinguished political scientist, academic and a Ghanaian. The problem of the 2 major political parties in Ghana is not one of opposing ideological or even political difference. There is none. The 2 groups have cosmetic differences. And even more important, they are united by their massive corruption and thievery of the national coffers. Is anybody in Ghana blind to all the corruption scandals of both parties? In fact both parties were involved in the that criminal activity known as "judgement debt payments." The NDC and NPP are not fighting because they have any differences. The ruling NDC resents being hampered in its looting. And the opposition NPP is deeply aggrieved that they've been deprived of the chance to loot! Politics is the only growing industry in Ghana! Politics is the fast way to fabulous, astronomical riches! All at the expense of national development and the welfare of the people. One cannot deny reality and advocate theoretical concepts or adopt foreign systems that have no bearing to a country's reality. When we have established strong, anti-corruption institutions and have honest political parties too then you can talk about coalition governments and such. A coalition government of NDC and NPP is a coalition of two looting gangs in different clothing - which will simply put the last nail in Ghana's coffin!

That said we cannot cast prudence to the wind. The only way forward as propagated by the genuine and true son of Ghana/Africa Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is a united front i.e ALL-IN or union government. When the cats eat from one bowl or same saucer you can bet that one cat (NPP) will not allow the other cat (NDC) to have the lion’s share of the food (booty). That way they become watchdogs and afraid of their own shadows.
Yes, Germany a wealthy nation and the economic locomotive of Europe has formed a coalition soon to be ratified by SPD basis. They have reached a social market economy consensus for the good and welfare of the people of Germany. We can also emulate that in the best interest of the good people of Ghana. ALL-IN is the only way forward no doubt about it. Where there is political will there is a way/solution. Seek ye first the political kingdom and everything will be added unto it; another axiom from the greatest Ghanaian/African Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. AFRICA MUST UNITE; it starts with Ghana.

Well said for Germany. How many parties do we have in Ghana? For some political scientist to make such a suggestion is funny. These politicians have demonstrated over the years that they cannot work together. It goes back to 1957. When you read some of the parliamentary proceedings, it becomes clear that the opposition have the believe that any policy idea from the ruling party , no matter how good it is must be rejected. It was also true for the ruling party. If we have tried so called multiparty democracy for this long to no avail, why would some form of "UNION GOVERNMENT" work now? Like someone said it will quickly turn into a 'COUNTRY CLUB'.

A government that limbs from one crisis to another should not be a model for a developing economy like Ghana!!
More decentralization from Accra will be in order. Too much control from Accra. Let the government regulate and guide depending on which political party wins an election and allow the people and business to lead the development.

I thought NPP ( or more precisely Nana Akuffo ADDO) was rejected by the majority of Ghanaians during the last election. Nana Akuffo Addo tried to use the courts to get the presidency but that failed miserably and now instead of putting in the legwork required to make the NPP electable the NPP party leadership is now resorting to these desperate and outlandish suggestions. Are they hoping that by drumming up these suggestions they will develop enough momentum to make their suggestion become reality? Could it be that some people in the NPP now suspect that the party in its present format with Nana Addo et al at the helm will never be voted into power ? The NPP must restructure itself to reflect the aspirations of ALL Ghanaians rather than that of the narrow interests of some tribalisitic minded members. The NPP NEEDS to shed its Akans only image if it wants to ever win an election in Ghana. The whole leadership structure of the NPP IN ITS PRESENT FORM simply lacks the know-how , will or vision to be able to lead the party to an election win. The painful reality is that a 2016 election win for the NPP is now beyond REACH,A PIPE DREAM. Too much time ,resources and energy was wasted and squandered persuing a futile and self defeating litigation in order to massage the wounded over-sized egos of a failed leader. To be honest as things stand A 2020 win by the NPP is a more realistic target, provided much needed gut-wrenching reforms are courageously carried out. IT IS SIMPLY TOO LATE NOW FOR THE NPP TO GAIN ENOUGH TRACTION AND MOMENTUM in time to unseat the NDC IN 2016.IT WOULD TAKE A MIRACLE FOR THE NPP TO WIN the 2016 ELECTION.EVEN THE DOGS IN THE STREET COULD SEE THAT THE LITIGIOUS PATH EMBARKED UPON BY A SORE LOSER OF THE LAST ELECTION WAS DOOMED TO FAILURE.

Is he trying to re-write the Constitution? He was talking yappy yappy when kuffour was in power but he never talked about winner takes all. Now that his godfathers are out of power he is advocating for bringing them in through the back door. He should have known that until the constitution is so amended what he is advocating will be unconstitutional. That makes his submission academic dishonesty. If the NPP learns to accept defeat and wait for their turn, Ghana will be very peaceful and development can go on in peace.

What we do not need are immature, greedy and down right imbeciles cohabiting to rob the country. Our politicians graduate from the universities, have no life or working experience and go straight into politics to become ministers. Our political system is top heavy with everybody wanting to become an MP or minister. We must build from local government institutions upwards. Decentralization is key.
The problem is not parties sharing ministerial posts but having teams of intellectuals whose aims transcend partisan loyalty craft and implement our educational, land administration , taxation, etc. You can share the posts but if the beneficiaries are of the same incompetent, corrupt and greedy stock, nothing will be gained.

Acheapong was right after all. Africans do not want to use technology to fight corruption. We need to use technology to bring corruption under control instead of relying on preachers because that is what is keeping us pinned down economically; NPP & NDC are both very corrupt parties. The idea of a union government backed by some technology (use of computer software to track government transactions and decision making, so no one forgets what he or she signed a while ago etc..)will be the proper evolution of our politics. We need to go back to the way our ancestors governed, but give it a modern twist. There must also be very strong local governance, backed by funds originating from the very locality through local taxes, so roads, drains, schools, garbage disposal can be taken off the hands of the government. Independent candidates must also become prominent, because there are a lot of prominent Ghanaians who do not want to be associated with the two parties NDC & NPP which are both very compromised by scandals at this stage of our political evolution. Independents can play a very important role in Local Government governance and also at the national level. Multi party democracy has not produced one single success story in the developing world; all the great economic achievements in the last 5 decades in the developing world have been recorded under dictatorships or de-facto one party political dispositions.

With all due respect, Dr Jonah's idea is insane - even anti-patriotic! To suggest a coalition of the two political parties that have equally ravaged the economy of Ghana through sheer thievery in all forms and manner does not make sense and is inherently dishonest. YES, A COALITION MOVEMENT OF THE VICTIMIZED PEOPLE OF GHANA TO ASCEND TO POWER AND USE OUR MONEY FOR THE WELLBEING OF ALL NOT THE PERSONAL ENRICMENT OF THE CRIMINAL POLITICIANS. There is absolutely no ideological difference between the NPP and the NDC. In fact, the NDC has done and continues to do the most damage to the Nkrumahist legacy.
Only Dr Jonah knows what God he worships and what ethics and standards he upholds at this time in his life and career. But his shocking suggestion makes no sense whatsoever and is inimical to the interests of the vast majority of the people of Ghana.

The opposition must fall in line under the ruling government and play their role as a responsible opposition and stop impeding the government in its business of running the country. Besides there is no constitutional reason to form a coalition government and the will of a few disgruntled individuals must not not be forced onto the entire populace.

It is impossible to change a fool to become a human being. This can only be done by Almighty God. Which party in Ghana deals with cocaine more than NDC Party? Tell me? Think twice!

Look what happened to Kwesi Botchway, Tsatsu Tsikata, Tony Aidoo and on and on. They've become some of the greatest politician-thieves on the African continent. It's all about the stomach. Stomach politics!
NDC can do that with the other parties but not with NPP since they see nothing good from NDC with the insulting Urusla Owusu, Sir John and co around. Forget!! NDc cannot work with these TObias and Sambalats, period
Kwasi Jonah and his NPP wait until they come to power to form that coalition.
That is very sensible and laudable suggestion which needs no insult.A good one there, I support your idea.
Dr. Jonah!!!is it a joke or what? These two parties will drain the country dry. This will be a coalition of the kleptomaniacs(NPP) and unorganised thieves(NDC)

Lions and lamb cannot be in the same stable bcoz those NPP sharks and crocs will be scheming to loot and destroy then blame everything on squeeky clean NDC. Baad proposition.
TALK ABOUT THE LOOTING AND NOT POWER SHARING. THE MAHAMA GOVERNMENT HAS LOOTED AND RAPED GHANA SO MUCH AND SO BADLY THAT IT NOW SEES POWER SHARING AS THE ONLY MEANS TO AVOID BEING THROWN INTO JAILS IN FUTURE. TELL THE TRUTH !
IS IT PRACTICAL FOR THE DESTROYERS OF GHANA (NPP) AND THE WELL WISHERS (NDC) MOVE TOGETHER? Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (AMOS 3:3)
This is a very naïve isead. Are you proposing Unigov ? Some of you guys are not thinking at all. It is a very retrogressive idea. Bury it !
This Idea is brilliant but for the all time criminal Togolese Trokosis Red Devils this wont happen . Ghanaians are fed up with their audacity to steal anything they set their eyes on, ranging from cats, cars and even onions.
