We have sat down to allow politics become the most lucrative and respectable job in Ghana. Politics is for service and not a place to look for prominence and amass wealth. We the voter can cut out propaganda, lies, the loud mouth, insults etc by voting for people who have already made it in life not people who never even worked after graduating and probably don't even have a bank accout.

Though Mr Kofi Bentil is raising a very important issue, he is totally wrong in blaming the middle class for not ensuring that the right thing is done in Ghana. The fact is that the middle class has never been the watchdog for society anywhere in the world. Revolutions, either peaceful or violent armed struggle are often the work of the masses and not the middle class. On the contrary, the middle class is often part of the problem because it benefits from the corruption of the ruling class and the silence or weakness of the working class. Therefore it is less worried about the suffering of the working class. Its position is that it is not responsible for the corruption but in reality the aim is to protect the little that it gains from from lack of action to hold the ruling class to account for its actions.

Moreover, the middle class cannot act alone to check the corruption. If anything, it would need the support of the working class. Ordinarily, the action to hold the ruling class to account is often led by the working class and do not even require the support of the middle class to be successful. The middle class is not a powerful group both economically and politically, especially in developing countries. It find itself in the middle and can choose to side with either the ruling or working class depending on which alliance it stands to gain most and depending on prevailing circumstances.

In other words, the working class and not the middle class is better placed to change things for the better in Ghana more than the middle class. For example, with the power and water problems, the middle class can afford to get generators or install solar energy on their houses. Again, the middle class can afford to buy big water tanks and hire tankers to supply water to their homes. By this the middle class gains by providing such services and also create jobs so there is no incentive on the part of the middles to ensure that the ruling class provides reliable power and water. The group that suffers most is the working class who cannot afford to provide their own power and water and may have to buy from the middle class. It is therefore the working class that is more likely to demand that the ruling class resolves the power and water shortages.

As usual, you have analysed the middle class very well. The middle class in any society are usually very content in their lives. These are usually the educated people who are mostly professionals with good careers. They usually adapt well to changes economically and therefore are not militants.

The problem Mr Bentil failed to realise is that, in developing countries like Ghana, the middle class is really very small and not politically vibrant. In Ghana for instance, we have few really rich people that Mr Bentil described and mistakingly referred to as middle class. Those that can call their friend Doctors in Ghana for medical care are not classified as middle class but are the rich and elite in society.

Ghanaian Politicians are very comfortable and not worried about the proletariats rising up and start a mass revolution because of our laid back attitude but it will get to a point where these poor people will have nothing to lose when they can't even afford one meal a day and will

I however wish to also add that the middle class - a capitalist creature or phenomenon in general, by their insatiable self-serving aspirations to dominate and rule others, has actually always been the problem. The corrupt ruling class in any situation, is actually the excrement of the so-called middle class.

In the peculiar case of Africa or Ghana, the pseudo-middle class elements are even more steeped in despicable acts corruption, mismanagement, patronage. In their pursuit of unbridled greed and power within the context of unpardonable poverty, the typical shameless verbal pretensions such as what Bentil, an avowed capitalist, avers to in his presentation, are to be expected.

When ever I visit Ghana on holidays, I cry within my self, seeing Kaya yoyo and other able bodied youth on the streets selling biscuits and sweets in the scorching sun, instead of being in school, just because the education system does not favour them- the dropouts from JHS.What type of society are we building, a CLASS SOCIETY? If steps are not taken to address the imbalance in the society, the marginalised will rise one day, and the result will be catastrophic, I tell you. The unabated cases of armed robbery is symptomatic of our failure to intergrate our JHS and SSS dropouts with vocational skills to make them employable. It is the whole public that has to find solution to difficult problems that they face but not the middle class.When we talk of public,it means the govt,you and I also have responsibility to help build the nation.We voted for politicians to manage the affairs of the country.Both the govt and the opposition parties have the responsibility to manage the national resources together,in unity we stand.This has nothing to do with the middle class who are economically secured or well educated.Mr Bentil should challenge the intellectuals who studied Political Science,Law and Administration to team up and find pragmatic solutions facing the country.It is not only by demanding answers from politicians that you can solve problems.IMANI GHANA as a think thank can also put forward pragmatic policies but not just to suggest that no Minister should be sent abroad for medical reason,this is very childish.Countries are not built from the middle only but by good direction given by leaders and the people together.What Mr Bentil is trying to do is to divide Ghana into 2 classes,the rich against the poor.He is cleverly instigating the poor against the rich or the lower class against the middle class.This is a very dirty propaganda from IMANI GHANA.A good leader is the one who unifies his people for a common good but not to divide them as enemies so that one should slaugther the other.Mr Bentil,I will give you 0/100 if I have to make your thesis.Thank you.

I am a Ghanaian leaving abroad I love my country and planning to return home soon. You have hit the nail right on the head. The middle class need to act now because the anger of the down trodden will not discriminate those who have made genuine wealth from those who made their wealth from corruption. We have example from our recent history to refer to. The June 4th uprising targeted all rich people and some innocent wealthy people suffered for no wrong doing. So if the middle class bury their heads in the sand and pretend nothing is happening they will leave to regret one day. The time to act is now let come together and demand accountability from our leaders on behalf of those who haven't got the means to do so. Let put politics aside and put mother Ghana and humanity first. I was in Ghana in August and think that what you have touched on is present and a clear danger and no right thinking Ghanaian middle class should have the luxury to ignore your warning. The majority ignorant and sometimes a few very foolish ones among them must be made aware that it is wrong to follow political parties (NDC/NPP) like we follow football clubs. (Hearts and Kotoko)These politicians have been hired to work for us, the people of Ghana, and it is our God given right to demand accountability from them. We pay them with our tax money, don't we? So they have no right to take what does not belong to them. They have no right to be rich overnight. (before their term ends, unless it is the legal payment they receive) The very foolish and sometimes poor who back the politician when they do wrong by comparing it to another wrong by a different politician must be discouraged through intense education on RADIO and TV that one wrong does not justify another. CORRUPTION, BRIBERY and other VICES in office is WRONG, and must never be condoned. Ghana is for all of us. If you are in politics, it does not make you more Ghanaian than those outside it or the less privileged. The Gold, oil, timber and other natural resources in Ghana belong to ALL GHANAIANS. The gentleman as a social commentator like most of us, was just pointing out what is happening in the country, and predicts that if it is not checked, those on whom the burden falls may react in a certain way. What is wrong with that. If you continue to experience constant power cut such that you can't even do your business unless you hire a generator and nobody seem to care, whiles prices for goods and this(electricity) and other services continue to rise, will you tolerate it till you die? Have you realized that those who can afford to find other alternative sources of water and electricity supply are doing so? Do you think everybody can do that? If no, why should they (those who can't) be left helpless? Think about it. This is not about any political party that you are sympathetic to, after all, they have all failed us. May Ghana be the winner.

Scrambling for government property and converting them into private ownership. Deal with those first, at least NDC is trying.
