This article is half baked- the writer should give readers a description of the process first before going into the findings.
All products have to be registered with the FDA when first imported and/or when they are first produced in Ghana. Once registered the products have to be renewed after a number of years. I am unsure whether it is 3 or 5years, however, the question the writer of the article should be clarifying is whether the products mentioned in the article need to be renewed or were never registered in the first place.
If they were never registered then absolutely we have a problem. By the way, the cost of renewing the registration for your existing product, be it Panadol or Ampicillin is roughly $3000USD.
The FDA has been very complicit and has been known to take forever to renew some of these drugs, why? because they want folks to grease their palms before they will do the work they already get paid to do.
So the crux of the issue at hand is
1) Are the products really fake and is the FDA proving this using some scientific method?
2) Are the products genuine and just need to be renewed/re-registered?
3) Is the process just broken?
Inquiring minds want to know.....

BA, if you had followed the tobinco saga, you would noticed that FDA does not do any scientific search into medicines. they only qualify unregistered drugs as fake whether it fresh registeration or renewal. to address your concerns,
1. i dont think FDA can prove scientifically whether any drug is fake or not. the only prove they may have would be to get the importer or manufacturer to sign that the prodcut is fake...absurd huh!
2)whether genuine or not, all medicines must be registered so if FDA is making registration difficult then i think their boss OPUNI should resign and a pharmacist should be made to head FDA.
3) the process at the FDA for registration and re-registration is not only broken but rotten. IMPOSSIBLE!

Pharmacist from the pharmacy board? That board is even as bad as rotten egg. A visit to our local pharmacy shops and drugs stores will awaken you to the stark reality of the men and women who operate there by dispensing drugs to its customers. The crazy politicking has eroded any iota of faith we have in our enforcement organization. In developed countries, enforcement agencies are at the helm of making the country civil. What do we see here in Ghana, attending meetings, international conferences and talking about politics. The gov't needs to wake up if we want to attract foreign investors to Ghana. IT STINKS!

Releasing a list of registered drugs is not enough to check the abuse but the continual checks on these so called registered ones.Is not safe to only check them once and release them onto the market since the registered ones would be infiltrated by the fake ones.So continual checks on these registered ones on the market, let your men be on the trail and a way of coding them and making the information public so that if you are buying any single drug its code must pass the test before purchase. The fake drug empire is as wild as the cocain cartels.

Tobinco's situation is unfortunate, but we have lots of companies in Ghana who are going against the law in importing drugs that have not been approved. If we don't use this as a test case to weed out fake drugs and drugs that are not even approved in the host countries, then when is the time? IF A TEST IS CARRIED OUT TODAY BY ANOTHER AGENCY ON A PRODUCT THAT HAS BEEN DECLARED CLEAN BY FDB TURNS OUT TO BE FAKE, WHAT KIND OF PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE PRESCRIBED TO THE HEAD OF THIS INSTITUTION? SHOULD IT BE, TO BURN HIM?I DONT THINK SO. THAT IS WHY THERE IS THE NEED TO STREAMLINE THINGS, GETTING THEM REGISTERED AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE RATHER THAN RESORTING TO BURNING.

Instead of arrest, investigation and prosecution, the corrupt NDC chairman chose to mediate as if it is a personal or civil matter. The president also in his inefficient style chose to set up committee. Committee for what? Political are not suppose to interfere with such public scandals but police chiefs who don't know their left from right in their job will prefer to wait the president's instructions.

This supposed list that the CEO of the FDA has caused to be published to as it were, create the situation that he's doing his job and there are some unregistered products and as a consequence of that, those products are fake is neither here nor there. First and foremost, there's a classification of medicines which are regarded as OTC and prescription drugs and most of these drugs fall into the OTC category, and therefore would not fall into the same strigent requirements as one would, of prescription medicines. The inability of the FDA CEO to make a very clear distinction between these 2 categories of medicines clearly exposes his lack of knowledge and his expertise in the area of drugs.
Having made the point about the knowledge deficit of the CEO of the FDA, let's now tackle the very issue in contention, which is the introduction of Gsunate suppository on the Ghanaian market, which have been deemed to be fake by the CEO of the FDA, because they have not gone through the necessary processes of clinical testing and registration in the country of origin and the host country respectively. The recent and most current malaria treatment protocols and guidelines for the treatment of P. Falciparum malaria requires the use of ACT(ie artemisinin-based combination) therapy of which Gsunate which was brought in the country, is one therapeutic intervention with respect to children. The WHO have further gone to introduce dihydroartemisin plus piperaquine to the list of recommended medicines to treat malaria. Because of the endemic nature of the disease and the ability of the parasites to develop resistance to the drug molecule, as has been observed with chloroquine, the standards for the importation, distribution and use of these ACT medications are extremely high, since, we are gradually approaching a situation, where, there are fewer and fewer medications to treat malaria in the most endemic regions of which Ghana, is a part. And indeed, the WHO recognizes the enormity of the situation and appreciates the level of effort which the regulatory authorities of most endemic countries put into ensuring that in the overall scheme of things, the therapeutic efficacy and the effectiveness of such medicines is not compromised. And it is on the basis of some of these facts, that one wonders how come it is possible, that, the CEO of the FDA- mandated to ensure that, such ACT based medicines meet the strigent requirements, can sneak into the country without the knowledge, attention and without the requisite documentation to indeed, grant the admissibility of Gsunate in the treatment of malaria in infants in Ghana? The excuse given by the CEO of the FDA to suggest that, it was concealed in a consignment of other products clearly, makes a mockery of the intelligence of those well meaning and right thinking Ghanaians who are in the know of such processes. It cannot not be the case that Tobinco would bring in such ACT based medicines without the knowledge of the CEO of the FDA. If the contrary is the case ie the CEO of the FDA, did not know about this clear lapse in regulatory oversight, then I'm sorry, the said gentleman, does not have any business whatsoever, occupying the regulatory body in the country as the head honcho. It can be inferred that, in view of the strigent processes that is attached to the ACT based medicines, the CEO of the FDA must have known and willfully allowed the medicines to slip through, upon the greasing of his palms, whilst, the said company had yet to put in the necessary documentation to provide for it's use in the country. The CEO of the FDA, is clearly without any ambiguity not cut out for the job, he has allowed the trappings of the office, to affect his limited knowledge, inexperience and lack of training to put the lives of the most vulnerable members of our society in harms way, by his corrupt tendencies, and the most honourable thing for him to do is to resign or be forced out. This is one institution well meaning and right thinking Ghanaians are not going to allow the gov't to toy with, because of the very sensitivity of the outfit and it's purpose and function. The NDC gov't of Mahama-Amissah Arthur should act now.
