This may sound petty, but if you live outside Ghana, for instance, and family and friends have your phone number, you will appreciate the increasing number of folks who can not pay their kids school fees, medical bills or even the day's meal. Ironically, an increasing number of politicians keep holidaying in the West - sometimes, only to deposit their loot. I have African and Middle Eastern friends who tell me the same things. None of these remittances is a result of (or results in) direct investment. Increase in remittances, anecdotally, is the result of increased poverty. Survival, if you like.

The cost of sending money or anything to Ghana is too expensive. I also send barrels to family in the Carribean and it is cheaper than the Ghana door to door.
