Zorro, don't confuse the shutdown in the United States to the corrupt laden economy of the incompetent administration of Mahama which is sending Ghana back to HIPC state. However Joe Abbey's has exhibited massive intellectual laziness in his reasoning, in the sense that the so call doomsayers are not the managers of the economy and cannot ,in anyway, bring the progress of the economy to a screeching halt. This is the time for the incompetent haters in government to prove their critics( the doomsayers) wrong by mapping up strategies and skills to turn the economy around if they really get what it takes to accomplish that. Ghana is really gone to the hands of clueless and fearless looters who believe the only "barking dog" ( castrated Togbui Avaklasu ) who can check on them is tamed for good. That loquacious J L S Abbey has contributed in no small way to the destruction of Ghana's economy. FACT!

He was the Commissioner of Economic and Finance Affairs during the apogee of Col Kutu Acheampong's CORRUPT NRC/SMC Government. It was under his administration that the word and deed called KALABULE came into existence. I have since been following this man. His bosom friend was Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings' Father, JOT Agyeman, the Chairman of GNTC, which was instrumental or spearheaded the kalabuleism of Ghana's economy:

It was a simple device: Joe Abbey created artificial shortages of essential commodities and propelled prices up. The difference between the controlled prices and hyperinflated market prices went into their long pocket holes. Infact Joe Abbey had advised Acheampong to repudiate existing debts of Western creditors in their famous Yenntua policy. This led Kutu to appoint him Economics Commissioner, and he introduced his bogus Operation Feed Yourself concept. But in truth, Joseph Abbey was the fountain of corruption which metamorphosed into Gyinabu and created the foundations for Rawlings AFRC coup de tat...quack revolution.

Now what did he do? He hibernated in wait of an indolent leader who came along in the person of academically challenged Rawlings: The iniquitous smooth talker called Joe Kalabule Abbey resurfaced with his sentimental quips and holier than thou attitude praising Jeremiah Rawlings as a saviour of Ghana...And without long, he was once again appointed to the lofty position of Economic guru in Rawlings regime. And lo and behold: he was the one who proposed the idea of Divestiture, which led to the sale of all our State properties of Ghana to invisible cronies including Black Star Line ships; Produce Buying Division of CMB; All our State Hotels and Regional Catering houses; Factories; Gold mines; Diamond mines; SHC; PWD; SCC and the lot...And yet NOT a single penny was accounted for

I was still watching him and never understood why he had escaped prison; such a thief! I even saw him flirting with Kufuor's government but other patriots won't allow him into NPP.

he want to form this fake Foundation in his front room to write his sanctimonious economics bulletins until another weak leader, John Atta Mills appointed him back into government and within a short time the economy nosedived with $8 Billion deficits.

Joe Abbey now says we should not say anything about the Abbeyeconomics...

If therefore you have the mandate of the people and the pointers and indicators point to the buoyancy of the economy, the opposition will have little or nothing to talk about. Yes!Mahama and the NDC have failed the nation. Does Joe Abbey know some people take fat checks to think and fix the economy? He should come again because they don't see and feel like the rest of the masses since GHc2 can get them kenkey/fish and equally prepare Tuo Zaafi with no meat.

If a thief becomes president of a country, the whole country suffers because all his ministers are thieves, his cabinet is mainly made up of thieves and so NDC is the cause of the "doomsaying" of Ghana's economy and until Mahma is dead with all his stupid ministers, the economy will plunge Ghana into the abyss.

Now, if you were to open a textbook from years ago, you would have found that natural resources in abundance are a source of growth and wealth for
developing countries, or so it was supposed. Why not?

Dr. Abbey I respect your contributions to the debate and your inputs to improve the discourse and the dialogue to put the country on the right path and footing. The NDC administration from all indications have not demonstrated the intellectual ability, the mental sharpness and focus, the tunnel vision, the leadership, and the gumption to understand and take the necessary steps to put the country on the right footing and actually alleviate the suffering of the masses. All the indices from all the various sectors are dropping, and with the economy and our finances, it's extremely pathetic and all this is happening at a time, when the NPP team during the past 8 years they were in gov't, in the midst of global crisis upon crisis, in the absence of oil and gas, windfall profits from our minerals, revenues, cocoa, etc, etc, continued to grow the economy, such that, the projection of the world bank that Ghana would become a middle income economy by the year 2015, was actually reached way before 2015.
The NDC gov't have demonstrated time and again, that they just cannot do it. They mismanaged the economy and NPP, had to come in and fix it. We are experiencing the same trend with this crop of NDC team. These are the hard bare facts and it's important that, Ghanaians appreciate these facts, so together we can all move the country forward. As a country how can the likes of Fifi kwetey be a dep. minister of the MOFEP? Is this a serious country and are Ghanaians cannot be wrong in their verdict with respect to the direction of the economy. The current Vice President and now the head of the Economic management team was in the 90's, very much involved in the economy and the finances of the country and where did that leave us? The sheer ineptness and crass incompetence coupled with the pilfering, looting and outright thievery that has been visited on Ghanaians by this NDC gov't is legendary to say the least.

for the mere reason that when our lenders want to take pulse of the state of our economy, they may sparingly read publications by our think tanks, but their real barometer will be from forums like Ghanaweb where the average Ghanaians discuss the economy and other important national issues.

Let us look at our economy. Ever since Dr. Robert Darko Osei opened our economic can of worms in Ghanaweb on September 30th., and Ghanaians needed to know, there has been nothing but a damning ricocheting of blame and finger pointing, may be rightly so because of the direct impact of the debt on everybody. But the sad part of this is...the outside world read Ghanaweb too, and they are watching !

Part of what is fuelling this "duel" is the failure of our economists to educate the rest of us in daily our discussions in the differences between our two deficits
and how we can reduce them:

First, the CURRENT ANNUAL BUDGET DEFICIT:

The servicing of our current annual federal budget deficit, which every government has to deal with year in and year out as governments come and go, just like every household has total annual income and total annual expenditure, currently chips away 12% of GDP. Although that is a lot, it is nothing Ghana cannot easily handle considering our inflows from cocoa, minerals and our new-found black gold...everything else being equal.

What is crippling this country is the TOTAL NATIONAL DEBT, which at current estimates is serviced by approximately 52% of GDP, give or take. Now, that is a killer ! But that debt didn't rain on us overnight. It is the difference between all the money that Ghana has ever spent and all the revenue Ghana has ever collected since 1957, from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's era to the present government, because it keeps passing from government to government...and to posterity, all along picking up compounded interest upon compounded interest. And the debt keeps ballooning. That is why every government ought to or ought to have engaged in some form of belt tightening and austerity measures. But all said and done, it will be grossly unfair to blame Mahama alone for our total national debt because he just happened to be the last guy in the relay who received the baton. Oh yes...we could also talk about curtailing corruption but that is a different animal that we will continue to talk about for years to come.

we have been subjected to unfair and not too good policies from our politicians. politics like education is supposed to be similar everywhere. but just like our fallen educational standards, so is our political system.

our leaders prefer try and error, easy options and we eventually pay. no one really begged them to wrestle for power.

I dare say that we provide them with all the comfort and privileges so they can think for us.
