The main cause of corruption in the education system is the sheer number of students chasing the very few university places that are available. I have always maintained that it is time we shift our emphasis on tertiary education. We have enough second cycle schools now, let us expand the existing universities to take more students in the short term before we think of putting up new ones. Let the decisions of our leaders be guided by the larger national interest rather than personal egos. We can alongside this expansion upgrade some polytechnics to offer degree courses. Any country which thinks they can get there without investing in high caliber manpower is dreaming. Our human resource is the best resource we have.

It will take one and only one thing to get where we need to be with Ghana's education system; taxation. Anyone who believes otherwise is living in lala land. Education system in civilized Western nations, including those who like the UK and or Ireland system, or the North American system is funded through taxation.
In Ghana there are those uneducated, under educated, the less travelled and less read who allow politicians to feed them nonsense about some free education without cost to society. When owners of every property in Ghana worth taxing can and is identified, every property appraised and equitable tax levied on these structures just for education, Ghana's school structures and infrastructure will be adequately funded. We may just have to fight to ensure those revenues are placed in the care/trusted with honest, virtuous and moral Ghanaians. There is no country anywhere in God's earth where education comes free; someone pays and pays dearly for education in the civilized world where education is a priority.
We have a Ghanaian society where the rich can pretend things will get better if education is free knowing darn well education can never be truly free and thus allowing or relieving them of human guilt to send their wards to privately well managed schools while children of the majority poor foot soldiers and political party idiotic followers to languish in run down structures and or under trees. We need to wake up in Ghana and stop allowing tribal and party politicking fools to lead us by the nose to our own downfall. Our forefathers and mothers were not all college educated but they fought and gave us the opportunity to go to school; they did not acquiesce to the notion that education is reserved for the children of the rich and politically connected.

Corruption in a educational sector is like an infectious disease which is spreading like a bushfire in a harmatan season. Imagine a training college of education or a nursing training which is supposed to admit about 300 students will be selling about 1,500 application forms the applicants. In such a situation, what do you think will happen? Just visit the teacher training colleges of education to see for yourself the calibre of students being admitted into the various institutions. Most of them could not make or write any meaningful sentence because their "palm kernels" were cracked for them by teachers whose consciences were bought because WAEC make so much money and VEHEMENTLY REFUSE to pay the "WATCHMEN" who do the invigilation. CORRUPTION GALORE and that is why some teachers can collect money from some students and help them do the wrong thing with impunity.
