There are three regions in Northern Ghana namely Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions. Thus, there's only one Northern Region in (Northern) Ghana.

Mr Vincent Achirinah should get up and doing. The people who cut shea trees for firewood and whatever else won't stop because Mr Anchirinah has held a press conference or released a press statement stating his unit's intentions. 100 miles north of Wa across the border at Hamile into Burkina Faso, one finds the 'environmental police' of that country who protect the trees from cutting and fires. Our police so sit in their dinghy offices and do nothing can bush burner and tree cutters. Incredibly any part of Burkina Faso makes any part of northern Ghana look a real desert.
Furthermore, the picking of the shea fruit which gives the nut from which comes the butter leaves a lot to be desired. Good start all the same. Let us hope Mr Anchirinah's outfit will walk their talk with the seriousness this issue deserves - working with the municipal and district assemblies and the police.

Shea occurs in the savannah zones of eight (8) regions of Ghana - UWR, UWR, NR, Volta, Brong Ahafo, Eastern and Ashanti. The key problem is tree-stumping for tractor or oxen ploughing. The solution is not to ban cutting but to allow (politically endorse and encourage) planting - something which is currently traditionally taboo due to land/tree tenure... Indigenous tree planting should be on school curricula so children grow up learning how easy the shea tree is to grow. I have proven evidence of 5-9 years to fruit from seed and we have got fruit from grafted scions in 2-3 seasons! Good luck.
