This was a guy who orchestrated the 1981 Coup that overthrew Liman's Constitutionally elected Government for the sole purpose of taken Political and Economic Hegemony from the Akans, especially the Ashantis. When you make historical judgement, make sure you are well informed and have access to facts that can help you make an informed judgment. Judgments made solely on emotions are tantamount to biases. We can see from the comments. Rawlings is commenting on a serious international issue, but see the comments fellow Ghanaians are posting. It does show the dangerous polarisation we have in Ghana. If things don't change, we will one day ask ourselves: where are we? It might be too late then.

It seems whenever an African country makes a step forward, or even just holds its place, some lunacy or idiocy arises, either within the country or imported from abroad, to counteract all development that was done, and retrench the country to a place lower that it was before. Like Mali, a "merely" poor country that suddenly became so chaotic that peace required a French military intervention. The same for Ivory Coast. And a host of other incidents more violent than these "minor" conflicts.

Al Shabab and Boko Haram, and all the rest, are just yet more examples of "Divide-and-Rule" in Africa. I wouldn't be surprised if the funding and the weapons and even the ideology come entirely from outside the continent and are simply dispersed amongst troublemakers, as these groups certainly don't benefit Africans whatever their goals. Even more so than the well-known outsider-funded conflicts like Liberia and DR Congo, who benefits from Mali collapsing into Somalia? Who benefits from *Somalia* being Somalia?

In any event, African countries must have contingency plans in place when a separatist movement or a religious outbreak *suddenly* and *intractably* takes hold in the country, or in a weaker neighbor. Does Ghana have plans for counter-insurgency measures for the Southwest Coast, or a long-term peacekeeping presence in Burkina Faso?
