I don't agree with those celebrating Awonoor's death as death awaits all of us but this Awonoor was a bigot and the truth about him should not be sugarcoated.

I was somewhere in this great University in the mid-west and I chanced upon the African writers section. Immediately, I wanted to see the Ghanaian writers and guess what I saw --- Nkrumah, Awoonor, Ama Ata Aidoo, Adu Boahen, Ayi Kwei Armah, Kwame Arhin, Ekwensi, etc.. From that time on, that section became a place I used to unsettle and rest my clotted brain cells after studying all my science books.

In the name of politics, we keep on "killing" our prophets. That must stop. May he rest in peace.

The first time I heard about Prof Awoonor was in 2009 when the newly enstooled Otumfuo Osei Tutu Ababio paid a visit to the Osu Castle for the first time to express his gratitude to the gov't and the Ghanaians for their support during the funeral of the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware. The nation was shocked when Rawlings, without any provocation launched a scathing verbal attack on the Otumfuo over what he claims that an Asante called in a radio station in Accra and said Asantes were superior to every tribe in Ghana, and so he expected Otumfuo to publicly come out and condemn such statements. It was after that Prof Awoonor said that though he was an Ewe, he traveled with Ghana's passport. It was a very sad event to see Rawlings addressing the Otumfuo with his left finger. It was very clear to any discerning mind that the whole episode was planned. I personally saw the event on GTV. Later Rawlings apologized but his apology was treated with contempt by the various think tanks and groups of Asantes.

All I'm trying to say is that Prof Awoonor was a great man, his posture and demeanor very gentle but because he couldn't hide his political ideas, he is remembered today for the bad reasons. There is a lot we all can learn from his life. What would you like to be remembered for?
