First, who the hell told these people Ashanti's were singled out during 79 revolution. Was the head of the AFRC, Boakye Gyan not an Ashanti? Haba!! Is Rawlings wife not an Ashanti? Didn't we have hundreds of Ashantis released from prison in 79 by Rawlings, including Effa Dateh and co.?

Was the finance minister, education minister, even the general secretary of the PNDC not Ashantis? Why? We are being so selective and very intellectually lazy in our TRIBALISTIC utterances.

Which of Awoonors poems and books did he show any form of anti-Ashanti sentiment? Which one? Someone tell us now in truthful terms. The only political tribal comment Awoonors made which these evil groups have escalated over the years is his comment that there will have been a total Ashanti dominance in our political landscape if not for Ewes. Nothing more and nothing less.

Does it show he's ANTI-Ashanti? Isn't that an observation which is clearly true, considering Gbedemahs role in Nrkumah coming to power and Rawlings defeat of the Ashanti-lead NPP?

Just a year ago, we had a man who openly called for the killing of Ewes and Gas on radio. These idiots see nothing wrong with it, but will escalate, hype, add more stories and lies, just to denegrate someone just because of his tribe and political inclination.

And those who are childishly and naively making mention of Awoonor killing anybody, they should go back to the National Reconciliation Commision which Kuffour instituted and see if anybody came out to mention Awoonors name of perpetrating and evil against him or his family. We are tired of these sectional lies. They lie lie lie and when given the opportunity to prove it in court, they all vanished and made the NRC a fiasco.

THERES ONE THING I KNOW FOR SURE, IF AWOONOR WAS AN ASHANTI, U WOULD NEVER HAVE SEEN ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON HIS DEATH. Ewes on this forum woud never have made such comments on the bereaved because of their tribal and political status.

I received news of the death of Prof. Awoonor, Agbonuga of Anlo with shock. It is a death I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy in spite of family squabbles which saw Prof Awoonor on the opposite side to mine. I therefore wish his family my deepest condolences. I understand a son he was traveling with was wounded. Speedy recovery to him. Our families go back a long way. Torgbui Sri II even lived and worked with his Sa Leonean kinsfolk in Freetown after working in one of their shops in Keta. That was in the C19th. His father the surveyor (I supposed that was his father), upon commission by Torgbui Sri II from 1907, designed and planned Anloga after the great fire in the early 1910s, a plan so-called better educated people are now destroying by building on areas left for roads!

In spite of our present misunderstandings, I think I've been the strongest voice in defending his good name in cyberspace against the skewed allegations made against him by taking a single sentence out of a whole chapter in his "Ghana Revolution" out of context.

Those who attacked Awoonor for adopting a perfectly accepted linear, dichotomy in Western explanatory academics, albeit a methodology I personally object to when it comes to exploring the complex articulation of interests in African/Ghanaian politics, are just dubious and mischievous, if they are read or educated enough at all to discuss the subject. Awoonor made it clear that he was reducing the problem, "in simple terms", to a struggle between Ewes on the one hand and Akans/Asantes on the other. Can any one of you dispute this? It is simplistic but isn't that kind of reductionist scenario we constantly view on these pages and in the utterances of even NPP leaders/politicians, from Busia to Adu Boahene to Kufour and Nana Akufo Addo?

If Awoonor hated Asantes, he wouldn't have married one.

If Awoonor hated Asantes, he wouldn't have devoted a book to them in which one cannot find a single insult or hate word, but rather the elevation of the Asantes, together with the Ewes, to the crux of solving Ghana's problems. That's the book I find more worrying but not for his detractors who find their own self glorification elevated to national level in that book and thus gratifying to them! Never heard a word of criticism from any Asante or Akan about that book! Or they are ignorant of its existence? Both of those books of his were actually copied for me by an Asante in far away Norway, precisely by the late Dr Francis Apppiah of NEPAD under K4, grandson of Baffour Akoto himself, so I don't believe that they are not aware of the existence of that book. Francis only objection, btw, was that he adopted a "Chazan-like" approach, which he Francis objects to, just like myself. That put both Ewes and Asantes on target to snipe at by non-Ewes and non-Asantes alike even though those people are major parts of the conumdrum.

A pity I had shipped both copies to Ghana in one moment of madness when I was contemplating re-locating to Ghana in the late '90s. But, we shall deal with the issues he raised posthumously, as they are still there.

I just hope his new book, which I heard was one reason why he was in Nairobi, dealt with some of those issues. I never liked the way he remained silent in the face of all that animus maliciously directed at him and fellow Ewes 'cos of his book.

They rather resulted to trade and that gave them the marketing and purchasing power. Before the Asantehene's educational fund, most businesses were transacted in Twi. Go to even non Akan speaking regions, not to mention Accra and see the language of the economy. This is a proved fact. If it were not so, why would Awoonor have talked about breaking the Akan hegemony on the economy.

First, who the hell told these people Ashanti's were singled out during 79 revolution. Was the head of the AFRC, Boakye Gyan not an Ashanti? Haba!! Is Rawlings wife not an Ashanti? Didn't we have hundreds of Ashantis released from prison in 79 by Rawlings, including Effa Dateh and co.?

Was the finance minister, education minister, even the general secretary of the PNDC not Ashantis? Why? We are being so selective and very intellectually lazy in our TRIBALISTIC utterances.

Which of Awoonors poems and books did he show any form of anti-Ashanti sentiment? Which one? Someone tell us now in truthful terms. The only political tribal comment Awoonors made which these evil groups have escalated over the years is his comment that there will have been a total Ashanti dominance in our political landscape if not for Ewes. Nothing more and nothing less.

Does it show he's ANTI-Ashanti? Isn't that an observation which is clearly true, considering Gbedemahs role in Nrkumah coming to power and Rawlings defeat of the Ashanti-lead NPP?

Just a year ago, we had a man who openly called for the killing of Ewes and Gas on radio. These idiots see nothing wrong with it, but will escalate, hype, add more stories and lies, just to denegrate someone just because of his tribe and political inclination.

And those who are childishly and naively making mention of Awoonor killing anybody, they should go back to the National Reconciliation Commision which Kuffour instituted and see if anybody came out to mention Awoonors name of perpetrating and evil against him or his family. We are tired of these sectional lies. They lie lie lie and when given the opportunity to prove it in court, they all vanished and made the NRC a fiasco.

THERES ONE THING I KNOW FOR SURE, IF AWOONOR WAS AN ASHANTI, U WOULD NEVER HAVE SEEN ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS ON HIS DEATH. Ewes on this forum woud never have made such comments on the bereaved because of their tribal and political status.
