Suicide in any serious country is not considered criminal. People who attempt suicide need psychological help. Who in their right frame of mind would want to take their own life? Most people who attempt suicide or succeed at it have serious underlying psychological issues that need to be addressed. Sadly in Ghana, such people are taken to prison. When was the last time prison reformed anybody in Ghana? So these who rather need help go to prison and come out worse. Anybody can have psychological problems whether rich or poor: it could be you or your family member. So stop insulting the psychiatrist, you ignorant fool.

'“The judge, who will fail to realize that the person who attempted suicide is suffering from depression and will go ahead to imprison the person, should first be examined mentally”,...'
I have copied and posted the statement twice. In the first it appears that the one who attempted suicide should be examined first before attempting to jail them. In the second pasting, which I have inserted the commas, it is clear that it the judge who needs their heads examined first.
I hope this clarifies the confusion.
God bless.

"93-95% of all suicides and attempted suicides are from mental disorders, with over 80% as a result of depression.".... Sorry Doc., I have a different opinion. This is a typical bio- medical approach to issues that involve emotions. You nearly forgot to mention that some depression has a psycho-social foundation, therefore exploring the psychological and the social environment that influence depression would be much helpful, probably much better than medications. It is sad to see how easy doctors prescribe medicines to a basic psychological issue that can be overcome by psychological counselling.

The punishment for suicide must be made harsher than any other offence because the idea behind it is to punish those being left behind. Why should you kill yourself because you have a problem you cannot deal with yet, you expect that problem to be solved by society after you are gone. Not even taking into account that your own death is going to burden those you are leaving behind. Criminalizing it will cause people to know that whatever they ever attempt must be fully accomplished or they all together don't get involved. It is about responsibility and accountability for one's own actions and inactions.
Let us not encourage this nonsense which eventually gives birth to SUICIDE BOMBING. Let people get it deep into their mind that if you try it and you are caught, there is a severe punishment awaiting you. Even if you succeed, your dead body will face it. Even God the most merciful frowns upon this.
