You hardly meet an Asante who doesn't say he is from a royal family but the fact that both the free and scions of slaves come from the same "ahenfie" doesn't mean all are the same. The scions of slaves, who btw, form 335 of the Asante population, are not told certain secrets about their origins because the dreaded "afisem" taboo forbids that. For those of you who don't know what that taboo implies, breaking it by revealing the origin of a person, even of slave ancestry, once he/she has been assimilated into the ahenfie fully, is punishable by death! That's one one way the Asante ancestors insured integration of outsiders. Other Ghanaian/African ethnic groups, including Ewes of course, also have similar taboos though not all of them carry the death sentence. But it doesn't mean such a person can claim all the rights of "pure" blood members, even if that person shares blood with them, for instance, being a scion of the patriarch but "unfortunately" from a slave mother or grandmother. If such a person, for instance, wants to contest for a chieftaincy post, the king makers would come out of consultation to say " we don't know you" and that should be taken as a cue to drop out of the race. If you persisted, then you'd be told the truth about your origins. Doing that hasn't stopped the disputes though, as it only make some of those people more intransigent and spoilers. Especially, when the issue involves land, with the usufructuary rights their progenitors had enjoyed being taken away from them. This is an issue the legal system in Ghana is yet to come to grips with.

From my experience tackling these Internet yobos in the habit of insulting Ewes, they always turn out to be scions of slaves or low class Asantes/Akans who want to be recognised as more Asantes/Akans (for (Ahoofe, it is Akyem even though his father was from Peki!)than bonafide Asantes/Akans.

The late Dr Francis Appiah of NEPAD during the K4 era, grandson of Akoto Baffour himself and my course mate in Legon and Dept colleague in Univ. Bergen, used to try to calm me down, saying those people just spoke for themselves and not the inner core Asante royalty or traditional leadership. Of course, JJ at the time had more rapport with the Asantehene than the Awoamefia of Anlo. When it came to light that one such loud mouth person actually descended from a West Indian scion of a slave who returned to Ghana, he said, I told you so! They were a problem for them just as much for us too! He'd point out that, just as those Ewes in the NDC were not controlled by the traditional leaders and do what they like in their own interests, so does those so-called Akans, esp. Asantes, always beating the war drum and insulting Ewes on behalf of Ewes. His argument has served to restrain me a lot from going on an all out attack on the jerks, as the collateral damage could be felt near and wide. But I think the time has come to launch a counter-attack on these vermins and put them in their place, esp. when the current generation of the Akan leaders in the NPP hold views not dissimilar to them. Let the chips fall where they may!

However, I personally feel Gabby was right to point out the fact that the sc decision was not a logical one as their decision had no basis. The facts of the matter was clear. Over voting took place. If the judges decide to disregard these facts, Gabby has every right to question their motive. Tsikata however was crude and insulted a judge merely because the judge did not rule his way. If tsikata wants to make stupid arguments in court, of course a judge who uses facts and the law will always rule against him.
Gabby on the other hand based his arguments on the fact that the sc ruling was not consistent with the facts and the laws of the land

He compared Canadian Elecoral matters to that of Ghana, and that is beyond any honest argument. Elections Canada hires tempoarily workers during elections just as Ghana Electoral commission does. The fact of the matter is that you can't compare Canadian society and Canadian Institutions with regard to their adherance to the rule of law to Ghanaians and Ghanaian Institutions. Ghanaians and Ghanaian Institutions are corrupt and flout laid down procedures at will contrary to Canadian Institutions. Atuguba refused to grant the petitioners request of annulling some results where Electoral Commission Officers failed to sign forms they were supposed to sign just because the Party representatives signed their parts. Did it occur to him that in some cases different results were announced than those the Party representatives attested to?
Election Canada is currently prosecuting a guy from the current Federal ruling Party for directing people to wrong and non-existent polling stations during the last Federal election.
Atuguba should tell Ghanaians and world at large how many Ghanaians has EC brought charges against and prosecuted for the ballot snatching during the 2008 elections and those who disrupted the biometric registrations. It's very disappinting that the NPP is shirking their responsibility by not seeking for a review of the decision. What they are doing by not seeking a review is allowing an illegality to become legal in Ghana. With this ruling anybody will be emboldened to behave anyhow and that doesn't bode well for Ghana's democracy.

We are trying to compare ourselves to the advanced world - but the truth of the matter is that there are no perfect elections anywhere - not even in the US. We are not in heaven yet so let us make allowances when hungry human beings make what Justice Atguba rightly referred to as "administrative errors" which could be corrected. How do you cancel elections wholesale because of "infractions" - just because a re-election will give you a second chance to try to win?? Are we really looking at the national interest or our own selfish desire to rule at all cost?
