This phenomenon of the carcass of whale washing ashore is not a new thing. It happen most of the time, mostly in Europe, Asia and USA, (even recently here in London, about three years ago), where scientists always studied the caused of death.
But there in Ghana, this backward people would rather build a shrine to keep the carcass and worship it as their new 'god' haba! Because these Ghana people would worships anything and everything, including Indian Bosom Ba. What a back sort of people!

Gulf of Maine whale deaths raising fears of toxic algae
-----------------------------------
More than 15 years after dead whales washed ashore at Cape Cod, history may be repeating itself.
Scientists investigating a cluster of whale carcasses in the Gulf of Maine say a near-invisible, toxic algae blamed for at least 14 whale deaths in 1987 may have struck again.
Blubber, skin, waste products and stomach fluid collected this week from 6 dead whales floating hundreds of miles off the Maine coast will help determine whether the culprit is an algal bloom, often called red tide because of its appearance when heavily concentrated.
Marine experts say the naturally occurring neurotoxin in the algae may have been passed to the whales by the small fish they eat. The toxin could have incapacitated the whales and kept them from breathing or feeding properly, said Donald Anderson, a principal investigator and senior biologist at Woods Hole (Massachusetts) Oceanographic Institution.
A team of researchers planned to revisit the carcasses on Monday to take water samples, knowing full well the difficult task they face searching for clues in a dynamic water system.
But, Anderson said, "If we can find the toxin in the whale tissue and find that there are still a lot of toxic cells in there, then we'll have the smoking gun, or at least the best we're going to get."
Authorities say at least 10 whales have been found dead in July near Georges Bank, an underwater plateau that extends from Cape Cod northeast to Nova Scotia and separates the Gulf of Maine from the Atlantic Ocean. It is about 200 miles southeast of Portland.
Casualties include one fin whale, one pilot whale, and between 6 and 12 humpback whales, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries in the Northeast. Dead whales are also cropping up in Canadian waters. Canadian news reports put the number at more than a dozen.
The whales had been dead for between a week and a month when they were found, said Teri Frady, spokeswoman for the federal agency, which is charged with large-whale protection.
If the test results, expected by next week, are inconclusive, experts may try to pull a more recently deceased animal to shore for more complete testing, Frady said.
Toxic algae has emerged as a probable cause as other suspected causes grow less likely. Anderson said veterinarians did not notice viral symptoms in the whales, and NOAA Fisheries said there were no obvious signs of trauma.
Large numbers of whale deaths are rare, and some scientists say an unusual set of events must have occurred, like the ones believed to have led to the 1987 whale deaths.
That year, mackerel had migrated south from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where they likely ate toxic zooplankton, just as the whales were preparing to migrate to the Caribbean and needed to consume a lot of food to generate energy.
Because the sand lance typically eaten by the whales was in short supply that year, the animals switched to eating the toxic mackerel. [The sand lance is an elongated eel-like fish that swims in schools and embeds itself in the sand at ebb tide. - CopyEd.PG]
"The fish kept eating zooplankton without being killed and the poor whales didn't stop eating the fish until they were dead," said oceanographer David Townsend.
Townsend, director of the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine, said it is unlikely that the whales got sick near Georges Bank. He said fish likely consumed the algae in 2 areas in the Gulf of Maine that are prone to algal blooms -- the mouth of the Bay of Fundy and a patch located 50 miles south of Penobscot Bay.
"My guess is that the fish that had been eating the toxic zooplankton were followed to the point where the whales ate them and (then) moved onto Georges Bank," Townsend said.
Scientists say there is little chance that the toxic algae will find its way to the coast of Maine because of the currents -- good news for the shellfish industry. Algal blooms closer to the coast already force the state to regularly close shellfish beds on a temporary basis. In humans, toxins can cause dizziness, nausea, fever, paralysis, and even death.
John Hurst, who directs biotoxin monitoring in shellfish for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, said the state's monitoring system "will keep everyone from getting sick."
"If we find that shellfish are getting toxic, there'll be closings," he said. "The Maine patrol people will see to it that you won't harvest, and dealers don't want it anyway because they don't want to be sued by somebody."
Anderson agreed, praising Maine's shellfish monitoring system as "one of the best in the world."

Officials examine a dead bottlenose dolphin that washed ashore on the Long Island, New York shoreline …
By Environment Correspondent Deborah Zabarenko
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A measles-like virus that suppresses the immune system could be the reason an extraordinary number of bottlenose dolphins have died after becoming stranded along the U.S. East Coast, a panel of dolphin experts said on Tuesday.
Since July 1, 333 bottlenose dolphins have been found dead along coastlines from New York to North Carolina, the highest number in a quarter-century and almost 10 times the average of 33 for the same period and region over the last five years, according to Teri Rowles of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Virginia has had the largest number of stranded dolphin deaths, with 174, Rowles said in a telephone briefing.
The death toll is likely higher because there have been reports of dolphin carcasses floating off the East Coast, particularly in Virginia.
Rowles and other experts from NOAA, universities and marine institutes have tentatively attributed the deaths to cetacean morbillivirus, which is related to the virus that causes measles in humans.
Morbillivirus attacks dolphins' immune systems, leaving infected animals thin and vulnerable to other diseases, including pneumonia. Many of the stranded dolphins have lesions on their skin, mouths, joints or lungs, NOAA reported.
Different kinds of morbillivirus stay within a closely related species and there is no indication this outbreak could jump to people, said Jerry Saliki of the University of Georgia.
This kind of dolphin die-off has not occurred in the mid-Atlantic region since 1987-1988. If this outbreak follows a similar course, it could last until May 2014 as dolphin populations build up resistance to the virus, Rowles said.
NOAA has declared an Unusual Mortality Event, which offers support for bottlenose dolphins in this area under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act.
NO DOLPHIN VACCINE
"At this point, there isn't anything to stop the virus," Rowles said. While there are vaccines against morbillivirus that occurs in land animals, there is no vaccine that could be easily deployed to populations of dolphins, she said.
This month, NOAA declared an Unusual Mortality Event for bottlenose dolphins in Florida's Indian River Lagoon, where dolphin strandings are nearly three times the historic average this year. The agency did not offer a tentative cause for these deaths, but many of the dolphin carcasses in Florida were emaciated.
"There is a tipping point in populations," Stephanie Venn-Watson of the National Marine Mammal Foundation said. "The primary hypothesis is East Coast dolphins don't have the natural immune response to fight off the virus."
Asked whether pollution could be a factor, Rowles said experts are monitoring an area off Georgia where there are high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in the water. PCBs were banned in the United States in 1979, but they can remain at manufacturing sites for decades and are known carcinogens, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

It seems to me by the descriptions offered in yesterdays report of a 'strange mammal' that landed dead on the beach of Asanta Beach, in or around Jomoro, that it is bottle-nosed dolphin.
It is about a week since these unusual occurrences started but thus far, no authority on marine biology or any such matter has added any clues or hints to help explain the unusual phenomena.
Of course in the absence of any scientific explanation that might help avert some more hazardous ulterior reasons as to why or how this could have happened, some idle-minded Chief fisherman has already gone to town with some mumbo-jumbo about how this event foretells a bumper fish harvest in the near future.
Perhaps experience might have informed him as such but science also tells us that it could be that the stranding of these large fish could be the result of a deadly viral attack which could also affect the smaller fish that we humans catch and eat every day. The effects could therefore affect us in a one way or the other. This is why it is absolutely necessary to find the reason or cause of death of these large fish.
The bumper fish catch which according to the Chief fishermans explanation, follows these unusual beach strandings, also hints at the possibility that the smaller fish that are subsequently caught by our local fisherman are also affected by the same disease and are therefore easier to catch. Whatever the case there must be some kind of correlation between the stranding of large fish such as dolphins and whales and bumper fish harvest that must be investigated by those who are rained in that sphere.
I do not believe that the Minister of Fisheries and the Minister of Environment and is it Science have both not heard about this story. Or is that perhaps they and all their staff are in a meeting or have gone to a seminar?
In the typical absence or silence of those who we pay to deal with such matters, can any arm-chair expert or student in the relevant area please offer some answers?

Just take the whale and bury it somewhere. There in nothing special in this. What actually happens is that the developed countries with submarines are the cause if this. The submarines emit sonar that disorient the whales into confusion and death. They then wash up the shores of wherever is close. So I hope Ghanaians should rather ask more questions to these countries as what they can do to stop the death of these animals. Not wasting money on fowls, goats and gins.

Whales being washed ashore in Ghana has been occuring long before the discovery and drilling of oil in Ghana and it has nothing to do with the oil. I just heard a report on joy fm today monday 6pm and the reporter was trying hard to link it to oil drilling in ghana and he got this armchair envioronmentalist at friends of the earth ghana to also try desperately to link two whale deaths one at kokrobite and one at jomoro to the oil exploitation in the westerrn region. In the first place this joy fm reporter indicated in his report that the whale found at kokrobite was the size of two saloon cars joined together. This is untrue, complete exageration, lies if you like. I was one of the first people to go to the beach at kokrobite to take videos and photos of this whale and I go there each day to take more photos. Indeed the whale is not even the size of a single saloon car. Secondly the friends of earth official has not been to kokrobite to see the whale for himself neither has he done any test to scertain the cause of death of these whales and yet he lambasted the oil industry for killing the whales., This is indeed bad journalism . I am sitting here at kokrobite community with my friends and we are just laughing at joy fm. The exageratiion and trying to make news and sensatiionalise it at any cost by joy fm is just too obvious and becoming too much. I suggest the Ghana journalists association the media commision and the independent broadcasters association calls joy fm in particular to order. Discerning ghanaians can indeed see the difference in joy fms reports ever since matilda asante and komla dumor left the scene. All that is left at joy fm now is a bunch of people who i believe are not trained journalists, and are also not ready to learn but only in search of local and international journalism awards. The mediocrity at joy fm now is indeed sad. Joy fm is indeed sinking day by day as they struggle desperately to churn out what they think is news and force it down the ears of their dwindling listeners, lies galore at joy fm. This lazy journalism must cease. The trend now at joy fm in particular is reporters claiming credit for what they believe are improvements or changes that their reports have brought to a community or a situation even when it is clear that their reports did not influence the situation in anyway. These days what one hears on joy fm is for instance "following a report by joy fm, the mining community at .....is being relocated by the mining company and the community has also beeen given water by the mining comnpany blah blah when infact discusssions about relocation between the community, mining, company and ngos started long ago and all was ready before joy fms report of the issue. and infact just a simple search on the internet will reveal that so much has been done about the situation and so much has been reported about the situation on the internet and other media over the years. This trend of reportage geared towards receiving awards at GJA awards nights and other journalism award ceremonies is so obvious and childish and listeners are sick and tired of this trend and style of reporting by joy fm. Infact I will also call on the GJA to search the internet and look for the real journalists and media houses that influenced positively bad situations before giving awards to these usurping journalists whose main interest are to get awards. This unfolding usurping and discovery journalism is very disgusting and ghanaians can see through this lazy and cheap journalism unfolding in ghana

Oh yes these journalists are throwing dust into the eyes of the public and and organisers of local and international award events are being swindled to part with their handsome prizes to undeserving journalists.

There are govt agencies whose job it is to investigate our environment, and educate us on what isgoing on around us. I would expect that any journalist reporting issues like these would actually interview these govt scientists as well and feed the public with more enlightened information.

'Cynthia' even though I don't disagree with the substance of your concerns about Joy FM, I think that your irritation with Joy FM is exaggerated and suspiciously prejudiced.
The truth is that all the Ghanaian media institutions including print, TV, internet and even the GJA itself can be accused of the same shortcomings and more. And even though Joy FM is also a culprit, it is light years ahead of its other competitors. That is probably why, ironically, you yourself seem, by your own account, to listen to Joy FM regularly.
Contrary to your views, I on the other hand, think that since Komla Dumor, there has been a marked improvement in the services of the station. This is not to say that Matilda Asante or Komla Dumor had anything to do with the deterioration or improvement in the services of Joy FM.
You must have woken up late in the day because, Komla Dumor, amongst other foibles, also had a spat with Ghana Telecom when he attempted to undermine the state in favor of imperialist interests. I have disliked the apostate intensely ever since and it is no wonder that he also subsequently got a juicy job with the notorious imperialist juggernaut - the BBC. Thankfully, I do not listen to the BBC as rule.
At least at Joy FM they speak English and not twinglish or some funny combinations of pidgin English, local dialects and patois all jumbled up into some mind-boggling cocktail lingo. There are also those local news readers who try against all odds to ape white or European news readers by imitating that aako-ti brofo sing-song style of reading news to the extent that they also mispronounce African words and names. Coming from an African face, tongue and voice, this scenario is so so so pathetic and revolting, if not comical.
But for the drudgery of program substance at GBC, I think their more mature and unambitious news readers are more tolerable and inviting to listen to. They speak or read their news in standard, plain and honest English that everyone can understand and relate to without trying.
Anyway, we all have a choice to listen to or not to listen to any radio or television station. There are over 30 of them in Accra alone and to tell you the truth, I cant really be bothered with the pandemonium and clutter of any of them. If anything at all, I listen to Atlantis where they generally play only music - decent music.
You are welcome to take after me.
