Kwesi Pratt is the most dangerous Journalist Ghana had ever have, he had the gut to recommend his fellow journalists to be executed by PNDC. Pratt even recommended Baako to be killed by the regime, thank God Baako was instead touchered violently and severely but his life was spared. This is what Kwesi Pratt can do. Now Pratt is a secret agent to NDC and US Embassy in Ghana. May God forgive Pratt and spare him the untold evils that will come upon him and his generations. The souls of those journalist killed through Pratt's recommendations to PNDC will never forgive Pratt. The fact is that many churches have changed the ways they used to collect offerings and other monies from their congregation.

I speak from personal experience and cite the instance where bowls for offertory are presently placed in the very front of church rooms where pastors and senior people in the church sit. Congregants are made to move in turns from pew to pew to these places to make offerings. One who for one reason or the other do not move when it is his/her turn is left sitting alone on his/her pew, isolated and opened to all manner of negative thoughts by those who move. The unfortunate one is left with quilt and embarrassment.

This is very different from years back where ladies carried bowls for offertory and visited congregants at the pews where they sat, and collected offertories from those who had it, with only the collector and the person sitting next, knowing that one did not make an offering. One who could not make an offer is left with no quilt at all, but hoping to make amends next time

Then again, is the issue of multiple offerings at a single church service. Nowadays, the least one is made to give an offer in many churches is 2 times. During harvests the very worst happens; the Kofi and Amas and many others aside the normal offerings and the harvest offerings. At weddings, revival sessions and other special sessions people are manipulated mentally to give the very last pesewas on them, with the promise of receiving better rewards from God.

The long and short of the matter is that today, in some churches people have been trained to raise funds and they use all forms of psychological and subtle means to extract monies from congregants.

Dr Otabil, these are real and you may want to find out from members of other churches, that is if your church does not use such methods.

I end on a belief I've held for so long regarding these methods churches use to extract monies from their members: That it was not by such methods of getting monies for God's work, that has enabled Christianity to get to me and you in Ghana. It is by God's own plan, as declared by Jesus that judgement day would not come until the word of God is preached to the hearing of every living soul. It is by HIS OWN MIGHTY POWER, with money playing little or no part at all, that the Churches and Evangelists of old got us the word which is being turned into money machines by some Christians.

Jesus separated the church and politics by saying simply this: (Mark 12:17) give unto caesar that which belongs to cesar. Stop mixing politics with religion and bullying your members into total submission. Ruling a country is not like a church service. For God sake STOP leeching your members and stop bragging as if you self proclaimed "men of God" knaves have any solution to the problems facing us. You would otherwise not be a 419 charlatan pastor. Ghanaians/Africans blame GOD or the DEVIL or WITCH for everything but forget about their own folly. Otabil, it is not possible for you to participate in all churches services in Ghana. You cannot therefore say that no church puts pressure on its congregation to give more than they can.

You do not need to defend things you do not know. Your church may be not demanding directly, however, indirectly some people give more than they can because they do so under the pressure of seeing their colleagues give.

The bottom line, you are not God and you cannot know everything happening in over the million services held yearly in Ghana. You do not need to draw a picture of the universe when all you have seen is just part of the earth.

I thought we've come to the end of our discussion on tithing but some have wondered how the church could be financed if there is no tithing ? They seem to have missed the point about FREEWILL OFFERINGS, by which the Lord Jesus and the disciples were supported. We need to let the people know the truth of God's Word which shall set them free. John 8:32. When the people know the truth, then they can decide what to do with it, but we don't have to lie to them, to fabricate things which the Word of God does not say. While it takes money to support the church, we have no right or authority to put any burdens upon the Lord's people, to threaten them, to intimidate them or bring them under condemnation or guilt or curse them because of tithes. After all, the Lord Jesus died freely for all mankind but He did not demand any money from anyone before He went to the cross ! We should stop evoking Malachi 3:8-10 and other Scriptures to terrorize and bamboozle the Lord's people into giving, but teach them the truth and exhort them so they could support the Lord's work with cheerful hearts, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7.

Let us examine ourselves to see why we're in the ministry in the first place ? Has the Lord called you ? Did He call you to make yourself comfortable and live extravagantly while His sheep are so poor and wretched ? To squeeze money out of poor people to satisfy your selfish interest ? To build up business empires for yourself at the expense of the Lord's people ? In short, are you in the ministry to FLEECE the Lord's people instead of FEEDING them ? "....should not the shepherds feed the flocks ?.....I will both search My sheep and seek them out." Ezekiel 34:1-11. Did He call you to make yourself a lord over His people or to serve them and lead them to Him ? Leadership is not lordship, but being good examples to the flock of God which He bought with His own blood, feeding but not fleecing them ! Further, is your love and trust in the Lord or in the tithe ?

And for his work, the shepherd( pastor, prophet, apostle, whatever) must be supported by those he serves as undershepherd, the Lord Jesus Himself being the Chief Shepherd. 1 Peter 5:4. Faithful shepherds or ministers who labour for the Lord's work need to be supported, but you don't do it grudgingly and not as a burden, but lovingly as a child of God. 1 Corinthians 9:13-14.

Jesus was supported by some people including Susanna, Joanna, Mary and many others. Luke 8:2-3. The apostles were also supported by individuals and the churches. Acts 4:34-37; Philippians 4:15-16; Acts 11:29-30; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2. The Philippian church was exemplary in giving because they took particular care of Paul's needs, and so should every church, group or fellowship take good care of their leaders who serve them faithfully.

We cannot afford to neglect our leaders who the Lord chooses to labour alongside Him in His vineyard. If they minister to us in spiritual things, we're also to minister to them in carnal things and whatever we could afford, but as the Bible says, we need to do it in love and cheerfully. In giving, let us remember to give our best and not some leftovers, because God gave us His best, His only begotten Son ! Whatever the case may be, we should not give under any compulsion or threats whatsoever.

Even though proponents of tithing cannot prove their position from the Scriptures, many are still adamant in getting the tithe. Instead of repenting from the sin of teaching a false doctrine and robbing and stealing from God's people, they persist in their greed and love for money, and the prophet Isaiah has a timely word for them:

" Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, everyone for his gain, from his quarter." Isaiah 56:11.

But now you know the truth, so let the truth set you free, and don't be cajoled into tithing by anyone, be they prophets, apostles, bishops or archbishops. None of them can claim to be better than the apostle Paul, let alone the Lord Jesus Himself. Paul was a Pharisee who knew all the Mosaic laws, yet when it was necessary, he had to "rob other churches," to serve the Corinthians. 2 Cor 11:8. In other words, Paul had to accept support from other churches in order to serve the Corinthians. If the Lord, or Paul or any of the apostles did not collect tithes from anyone, but depended on voluntary support, why should you allow anyone to tell you to pay tithes ?

Modern-day tithing is a false doctrine brought into the church either by ignorance or greed, and has gone on for generations and we don't expect that this brainwashing would disappear overnight. This is just a small start and we're going to keep the tempo till all the greedy and false preachers repent or get out of the pulpits and stop taking the name of the Lord in vain. But watch out, they would come to you with lying words to try and rob you and steal your money:

" But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you....and through covetousness(greed), shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you......." 2 Peter 2:1-3.

Give cheerfully to the Lord's work, but don't be deceived any longer !

This is the second and hopefully the concluding part of our discussion on tithing. And let me begin by saying that this article is intended for those who want to know the truth according to the Bible, and are willing to search the Scriptures to see whether these things are so. Acts 17:10-11. In the first part, many were enlightened and some burdens were lifted off many shoulders that have been groaning under the yoke of this bondage brought into the church by greedy or ignorant preachers. Others were mad because their false doctrines and greed and love for money have been exposed. Others were simply ignorant and behaved like the proverbial ostrich that would rather hide its head in the sand than confront error. And some were very indignant, insulting and cursing instead of proving their position by the Scriptures.

As said in the previous post, I used to teach and preach tithing, and when I did, the people just got up and parted with their money. One time, at a church here in Atlanta, Georgia, a pastor friend complained bitterly about the low financial position of his church and invited me to come and speak on tithing, saying his congregation didn't like tithing, and that even weekly offerings were very low. I told him, " Well, it's going to be different on Sunday." Then he asked me, " How ? " I said, " You wait and see ! " As you can imagine, the offering was over and above by about 1000 % the next Sunday. Those who didn't have cash wrote cheques like crazy, and I was proud to coerce them to bring out their money, telling them how they've robbed God and denied themselves blessings, using the "curse" of Malachi 3:9, for good measure ! Finally, I exhorted and commanded them, " Bring all the tithes into the storehouse.....! " I could see the terror on some faces and a lady was literally shaking as she wrote her cheque !

Lord, be merciful to us and forgive us for our many transgressions, twisting Your Word, misapplying Scriptures and abusing Your congregation with our greed and love for money ! Thank You for Your mercy and for Your blood which cleanses us from all sin ! I have repented and cannot in all good conscience preach or teach tithing again, because it is not for the New Testament church ! After carefully studying the Scriptures, I realized that Malachi was talking about corrupt priests in the Old Testament and not the New Testament believers, but these Scriptures in Malachi 3:8-12, have been used for generations to "scam" the Lord's people into parting with their money. Certainly, there are preachers who have been speaking against this abuse of Scriptures and "scamming" the Lord's people, but they have been looked upon with disdain and scorn and venom, but it is better for us to be scorned by mortal men than to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:31. " Woe to the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture, saith the Lord." Jeremiah 23:1.

AM I UNDER A CURSE IF I DON'T TITHE ?

No, my beloved, you're not cursed if you don't tithe, and neither are you blessed if you do; God does not need your money in order to bless you ! Abraham was already blessed by God before he ever thought of giving tithes, and so don't let any sakawa prophet, pastor, apostle, bishop, archbishop, or whoever intimidate you by twisting Scriptures to steal your money. The believer should give cheerfully, out of love for the Lord and His work, and not be pressured or threatened or cursed into giving. Our giving could be 10%, 100%, 1000%, 1% or zero %. according to our ability ! The Lord is more interested in our motivation than in the amount we give. Do you remember the widow's mite ? Luke 21:1-4.

What is your motivation for giving money or property to the church ? Is it so that you could be elevated in the church by your pastor ? Is it so that people would know that you are the highest giver in the church ? Is it to support the Lord's work or do you want favours from your pastor or prophet or whatever they call themselves ? Are you under a guilty conscience and do you think giving money to the church would ease the pain ? Did you rob or steal or commit adultery or fornication and expect the pastor to take your money and pray for you ? Remember, the Lord says, " I hate robbery for burnt offering." Isaiah 61:8. He does not delight in "stinking" or blood money ! Alas, many preachers are so greedy for money that they don't even care how you got the money, and would put curses on you instead of blessings.

DID JESUS TEACH ABOUT TITHING ?

Yes, in Matthew 23:23, He acknowledged that tithing was an obligation under the Old Covenant, but even so He taught the Pharisees to show mercy and kindness and faith. Besides, the Old Covenant was still in effect, and Jesus spoke to them as under the Law. The New Covenant was only ratified after His blood was shed on the cross. Jesus did not collect tithes from anyone, though He came to die for all mankind, therefore don't allow any greedy or ignorant pastor, prophet, apostle, bishop or archbishop to bamboozle you into paying tithes.

WARNING TO FALSE PROPHETS AND PASTORS

All over Ghana, churches are springing up everywhere like mushrooms and this is a good thing only if the motivation is right. But the truth is many are in the ministry not because the Lord has called them, but because they want to make easy money from gullible people who don't know the Bible. They love your money more than they love your soul. They are in it for the money; it's all about the money. God has not sent many of them yet they run, giving false prophesies and vain promises to helpless people. Jeremiah 23:21; Ezekiel 13:1-23. The Lord will deliver His people out of their hands, but the people need to be wise, and stop giving their money to greedy wolves in sheep's clothing. These false pastors and prophets need to start their own businesses to make their money, and stop fleecing the people in the name of the Lord for judgment is coming and has come !

BLESSED OR CURSED ?

Finally, if anyone feels they are being blessed for giving tithes, good for them, and they can continue to do so if they like. But if you feel you're under a curse, I can assure you that it is not because you don't pay tithes, but it could be something else. The Lord Jesus became a curse for us so that the blessings of Abraham shall be our portion. Galatians 3:13-14. If there is any sin in your life, confess it before the Lord and ask for forgiveness. Change your ways and do what is pleasing to the Lord and let His blessings follow you.

While most of their church members live in abject poverty with moderate surroundings, surviving on hardly attainable crumps of daily bread - the suddenly enriched, fattened and blotted priests, pastors and general overseers choose to live in mansions with expensive modern wares and can usually be seen travelling in the most dearest and recent models of cars on our deeply pot-holed streets. Yes Churches are not blood-suckers but the greedy owners and managers of these Churches are!!

'We want to build an auditorium so who can give us GHC 5000' After that GHC5000 prayers are said for those who pledged. Then it goes to GHC2000, and prayers for GHC2000 are offered, etc, etc..... God save Ghana! I know many people who avoid going to church whenever it is time for such functions.

In fact, the churches help its members to pay their taxes by preaching honesty. Additionally, most church members pay their taxes because it is deducted as source except for business men and traders.. People can choose to do what they want with their money and that is no one else's business. In all fairness, the only argument that hold water against what Otabil is saying is the fact that many churches mismanage the church coffers but no one has even raised that. But as for the assertion that no one is forced to give, no one on this forum has been able to give a counter argument to what Otabil is saying. At least, so far.

Apart from that, most of them use force or embarrassment theory to extort money from their congregation. On your second point (coercion), I don't doubt that there are pastors who do coerce church members and extort money from them. But generally, Christians give because the Bible tells them to do so. People are asked to either stand or come forward if they can contribute a certain amount toward a project, and some of these pastors even go to the extent of saying special prayers will be done for those who contribute more. So the pastors use subtle ways including peer pressure e.g. Kofi + Ama, the congregation dancing in a procession to the front to drop their offering a bowl; promise of spiritual blessings if you donate e.g. tithes (some even threaten you with God's wrath if you don't pay tithe); and a need for some social support e.g. offerings for widows and orphans. Some churches even go further to prey on the belief and ignorance of the laity. Pastor you have to try harder than that. I have little problem with people giving out of religious compulsion. I only wonder what they get back!

I dont think any objective reasonable person is against churches or any religious body when they portray them selves, only, as ideal groups or associations for the upliftment of members' morality and guidance to success in life. The problem arises with the additional claim of divine essence and the discouragement of the prioritization of reason in following what men of God claim to be coming from God. The "it is from God; so don't question" is criminal and oppressive. And must be fought by any human right activist if they are truthfull. We must begin to see debates after sermons to refine what the congregation sends home.
If the scriptures can have various interpretations why cant sermons be scrutinized?

One Sunday a pastor told his congregation that the church needed some extra money and asked the people to prayerfully consider giving a little extra in the offering plate.
He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns.
After the offering plates were passed, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had placed a $1,000 bill in offering.
He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he'd like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate.

I was once compelled to tell the Harvest Committee of my church that their tactics were rather extortionist. They did not like it but that made the following year's committee more circumspect. The problem is not so much with the giving as to the use to which the money is put. Some Church Leaders spend the money with complete recklessness.

Don't be naive, Ghanaians. Church is a business, pure and simple. When "men of God" have a lifestyle of popstars, movie stars, footballers, NBA stars, why shouldn't they be taxed? If he would be honest in front of the pulpit, would he be willing to disclose to the church and by extension, Ghanaians how much of church money is expended on him? Yes, it might be his own initiative to setup a church, but the church congregation is not made up of his wife and children only. People have contributed monies for him to have the lifestyle he has currently. How much of what he has goes to help the poor and needy in the church? They are all the same, it doesn't matter which church. Who has appointed him the mouth piece of the churches for him to be coming out blazing. If there is the need to pay taxes, let everyone with an income pay, it doesn't matter how you get that income. Laws are not static and can therefore be changed when need be.

You can deceive those who do not have a good knowledge of the Bible. If one does not learn the TRUTH from the Bible, you open yourself for exploitation by the false prophets and the so called pastors who do not care about the spiritual well-being of their members. Because the are exploiters, they rather side with the politicians from either the NDC or the NPP. TITHING should not become incumbent on church goers or Christians.
TITHE is "a tenth part or 10% given or paid as a tribute, especially for religious purposes." However, "by the 1st century of our Common Era, the Jewish religious, particularly among the scribes and Pharisees, made a sanctimonious show of tithing and other outward works, in a form of worship, but their hearts were far removed from God." Read Matthew 15: 1-9. Tithing is not for Christians! We are encouraged to give according to what we have voluntarily to defray the costs of a church. Church members must give cheerfully instead of being asked to give fixed, specified amount.
After all the tithes go to fill the pockets of the pastors who lead lavish life-styles

What is the crime of a Pastor speaking against walking the world without a vision. For those of you who questioned Pastor Otabil about his vision, I believe you are living in an enclosed chamber outside the boarders of Ghana. I believe he had a vision to establish a university which he has creditably achieved. He may have had a vision to win souls for Christ..Look at the size of his congregation. A vision to set up scholarship schemes to assist the unfortunate poor but brilliant school going children. A vision to write books for others to read. These he has achieved. I believe there may be others.
What is the crime of man of God who asks his congregation to give for the work of God to be blessed. Christians are not compelled to give. We give and give bountifully because we believe that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
As for those who consider it fit to insult him, its up to God himself to decide on you. His word say we should not touch his anointed.
Pastor Mensah Otabil has done a lot for Ghana [and i believe DR TONY AIDOO can attest to this] and so let us accord him some level of respect.

It seems quite clear to me that these modern day pastors are, primarily business men and are quite slick, using religion as the avenue for making fortunes.

We know that generally, con artist do not force people to donate. Subliminal messages and selective use of old testament texts around curses are powerful tools to put people under duress.

These salesmen sell hope and faith and they expect to be well paid in all kinds of ways for such services. As a consequence they have transformed religion into a booming business.
