Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa, Afari Djan on the ropes !
Dr. Afari Djan, the self-acclaimed god of elections, currently finds himself between a rock and a hard place.
The noose around his neck is getting tighter and tighter with ever lie that spews out of the mouth of the Tilapia fish-farmer.
The chief returning officer of elections in Ghana is today claiming never to have heard what 'pdf'(portable document format)means.
Lucky for Afari Djan, the NPP will teach him what pdf is all about today for free.
We shall make every NDC foolsoldier see the gargantuan stealing prowess of Afari Djan.

On what do businesses make profits; is it not on products/services?
In the case of educational institutions the products are the students whose fees give authorities profits.
Therefore, any tax will be passed on to students and their parents. Students who cannot pay the tax-induced fees may have to drop out of school, much to the disadvantage of the
country.
As a country we must not be easily taken-in by small challenges (in this case, the current hiccups in our economy), and destroy the things that provide the greater benefit to us.
Remember that it was for very good reasons that our laws exempt educational institutions and some industries from taxes.
Let's think twice on this matter!

Somewhere in the article says that "But the act has been amended to bring private universities into the tax net". Look, we are in a nation where our constitution has given tax exemption to our president and no one , I repeat, no one has come out with any voice against it. It is an insult to the entire nation in the sense that no one forced any Ghanaian to vie for the presidency and why should they enjoy tax exemption status?
When a commission was set up to review the constitution, nobody raised any objection and they overlooked that clause as if it is okay? Do we have people with brains to analyze issues that confronts the nation?
Mahama and the past leaders, being greed and dishonest, are happy with that clause. If they care, they can consult parliament and amend that clause for them to pay tax. How do they feel if they read budget and increase tax on anything including maybe a future "air tax"? Our leaders are very irresponsible and dishonest.

What are these private Universities talking about? They are not NON PROFIT INSTITITUTIONS so why should they be exempted from paying taxes? These profit making universities most of them providing inferior education and charging exorbitant prices should be made to pay taxes immediately. How do these institutions demand tax excemptions when they are solely there to make profit? Ghanaians want the government to provide services and they don't want to pay taxes. Tax all of them.
Pelicles, I do agree with you, the President of Ghana should pay taxes like any citizen. He lives virtually free and earns more than any government employee and should be made to pay tax on his salary as the President.

I do not understand why Ghanaians hate paying tax to the core of their bones!! Without taxes how can there be development from the government all of us are crying for? I personally believe that any good citizen or organization in Ghana earning decent (beyond that of minimal or survival wage) income should pay tax. This means that even some churches earning millions per year or month should by principle of patriotism and virtue of doing the right thing, pay taxes! Some pastors are earning more than medical doctors, lecturers and even the president, so what prevents them to pay tax to enable the country to meet its obligations? Are we serious as a nation or religious people who are seeking the welfare of our beloved country? See how much some churches are earning from tithe taxes (10% right?) excluding millions from gifts and donations. This is food for thought for all of us. I know some people are going to attack this comment vehemently, but that does not in anyway nullify the facts and the issues. Thank you!

Absolutely not bad idea because it will increase govt revenue as well as make unis/colleges become more competitive in general delivering of quality education by diversifying and expanding their sources of funding. Note that its not only cost that produces quality output as subsidies (tax holiday)sometimes breeds non-competitive culture.
Weighing the balances, some of the issues govt should on the other hand consider to regularise the levying of taxes in this industry for now or the near future are as follows;
1. timing - the backlog of new entrants at a point in time
2. course/programmes run by each institution in the framework of govt priorities such as need to train more people in certain professions must be factored into the calculations of taxes or exemptions
3. About 5 years tax holiday for new unis/colleges to build buffer same as the Free Board Zone idea
4. Exempted institution must channel part of profits into govt priority areas like research & devt to be monitored by govt, fee reduction for diable or poor people, etc
5. Govt tax percentage on profits could be retain in the unis/colleges as ownership investments if the unis need those funds to build infrstructure, books, etc.
6. Guess more ......!
Do not get me wrong, afterall these unis/colleges are not charities per se their aim is to make profits so why a gripe to pay taxes on profits? If there can't be free education why then tax free holiday forever? Lets face facts countrymen.

The same should apply very church that does not have an EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION such as school must be TAXED. The Presbyterian,Methodist the Catholics and Anglicans were those who provided quality education to almost 75% of the children in pre and post independence time. They used their money to open schools to educate our children. But these charasmatic churches make millions and millions of money through many means and their pastors ride in expensive cars and live in oppulent vilas without the State getting anything out of them. They must open fee free schools to High School level to cater for the children of their congregants. If they do that then they should enjoy tax free status.
Universities are in to make money so why should they be exempted from paying taxes. The most annoying part of it all is to hear that the PRESIDET of the country does no pay taxes. Whose tax money does he want to feed him and his family? Everybody in the country should contribute his/her qouta to build the country. No EXCEPTION.
