Twenty years ago when i visited Ghana, i said to my Children, if the promises given by pastors in Ghana is not fulfiled, and the number of Churches spriging up all over the land like mushroom, Ghana will fall back into the dark age never seen before in our history.
We need to have a very serious conversation as a people, where is the Men of God taking our country?
Every pastor you meet tells you how many Churches they have and how they are all over United States, England, Canada, Europe, and Carribean
chasing onething, The Almighty Dollar. Not service to his community from which they came.
Lets look at how many churches has been opened for the past fourty years.
The bigest bussiness in Ghana now is Church. Listen to pastors prayers to the flock of poor people, your pockets will be full, you will be on top in your bussiness, and they say we have no right to question them, because they are men of God.Remember, when the blind leads the Blind the both fall into the pit.

The most powerful religious organization in the world is the Roman Catholic Church, it is also the most CRIMINAL, yet most African journalists are afraid to criticise them, they conviently reserve their criticisms for African pastors. African pastors are no less criminal than the Roman and Anglican Popes, Arch bishops and the other ministerial ranks.

Check out the current happenings in Italy's Vatican, BBC news reported that Eastern European Policemen, have been trafficking Eastern European boys to the Vatican for homosexual purposes, and this has been the norm in Vatican lifestyle, in addition, the Vatican is embroiled in a series of fraud scandals involving clergy big wigs, some of whom have already resigned.

African Pastors are very small-fry, I agree with your criticism of them, but I think that they are unfairly targeted, if one is to criticize wrong doing in religion, then one ought to be an equal opportunity critic, those who are afraid to criticize their masters, are nothing but literate slaves with a computer.

If your pastor who is not a levite is takinf tithes, it is sinful and wrong.
Only Levites, the poor, widows and orphans received tithes. read your Bible well.

No one is saying do not make donations, contribution to your church for it's up keep but do not call it tithe. Calling it tithe is where the pastors are saying there is a curse on it if you do not pay.

Nooooo!!! This is twisting and misquoting the Bible because we want to take money from the poor. The Bible says do not take tithes from the poor and needy. The poor are to benefit from the tithes. They are to be given tithes. Telling the poor to pay tithes, with promises that God would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings on them is a big con game.

The Bible says those with less than ten goats or sheep were exempted from paying tithes. God did not take tithes from the poor. Telling the poor and needy that if they don't pay tithes God has cursed them is the ultimate in greed and callousness. Some pastors tell poor church members to pay tithes before their rent or children’s school fees and expect miracles. Some tell the congregation not to worry about what the tithe is used for. They say to just pay the tithes and leave the rest to God.

Tithe was not for pastors' salaries or church furniture. God said use it to feed the poor and levites.

NEITHER JESUS NOR HIS APOSTLES PAID TITHES, BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT FARMERS OR HERDERS.

FOR SPREADING THE GOSPEL, NEITHER JESUS NOT THE APOSTLES RECEIVE TITHES BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT LEVITES.

Who were the Levites and what was their role in the congregation? I believe they were people set aside to administer the congregation. So are Pastors today. They set themselves apart to administer God congregation and are qualified to receive tithe. As to whether they handle the monies received appropriately, it is another question.

Whereas tithing in the Old Testament was based on strict laws in the Churches now it is based on faith. And so is the whole concept of Christianity, it is faith and you need a lot of it. I pay my tithes often because I believe it is my duty as a Christian as it is my duty as citizen of my country to pay tax. I hardly ever think about the affluent or otherwise the lifestyle of the pastor. I believe the tithes and the offering paid could maintain the physical presence of the Church in the land and that hopefully my children would attend Sunday school that would add to their knowledge of God and hopefully a moral upbringing. It may just be the difference between them becoming drug addicts or social misfits in the future.

Sometimes we do not know what God delivers us from. Maybe, in Ghana we've not experience similar terrible civil wars in the surrounding countries because of the foundations laid by the early Christians. Those early Christians were mostly the products of white missionaries who of course, were sponsored by the tithes and contribution from their churches.

Faith and logic are not bedfellows and what appears to be killing churches in Europe and elsewhere is not because money in the sense of giving to the church but money in the sense of having enough and the attitude of no need for any God for me to do well. In fact there are many non-church going Christians in Europe and elsewhere who still pay their tithes to the Church.

Many Ghanaians ridicules rich people and makes all sorts of allegation against them. I admire Pastors with big Churches. I have known a few before they started and their life styles before starting was lives dedicated to God. Often they start in very obscure way and eventually get elevated. There are many that starts and 20 years later are still meeting in classrooms with 20 members. Some might be doing things that pleases God then.

Logically, paying tithe does not make sense but as I have known having faith in God makes every sense. Sometimes it does not even makes logical sense to give to the poor; for who is the poor? You give to the drug addict on the street to fuel their addiction. But, you must give and believe that when you giving you’re giving to God. The scripture says … he will open the windows of heaven and pour out BLESSING.. That blessing could be anything. Long life to look after you children, that inner peace or avoiding divorce it could be anything. Anything!

BUT WHEN THE WORD OF CHRIST IS TURNED INTO A BUSINESS AND PASTORS ROB AND LIE TO MAKE MONEY, THEN MANY ARE ANGRY AND UPSET. WE ARE UPSET WHEN THEY CON AND FAKE AND MANIPULATE THE GOSPEL FOR RICHES.

A LARGE CHURCH MEANS NOTHING TO GOD. PASTOR EDDIE LONG HAD A BIG CHURCH BUT HE WAS MOLESTING BOYS IN THE CHURCH. MANY MEGA-CHURCH PASTORS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN CRIMINAL ACTS IN THE USA. SOMETIMES A SMALL CHURCH IS CLOSER TO GOD.
WHENA CHURCH GROWS, IT IS NOT THE PASTOR, IT IS GOD WHO GETS THE GLORY.

But I am not going to continue this argument. I will pay if I can. Christianity is a very individual affair. It is a way of me saying to God I do not depend on the 10% of my income rather, I depend on you God.

If more people like you, who can search the scriptures and understand where 'common' practice is wrong, and go beyond that to publicly explain this, Christianity would not be 'dying'. There are a number of lazy men going into full time ministry, supported by dumb or apathetic congregations who don't challenge these men to do better. I once reported my 'clever' pastor to 'higher' Church figures, for taking my tithes directly. They got him to pay the money back to the church with interest.You may like to shed some light on Rev 2:2 another time. Thanks once again for taking this stand and posting this article.

BIBLE SAYS GIVE TITHES TO THE POOR. The Bible says do not take tithes from the poor and needy. The poor are to benefit from the tithes. They are to be given tithes. Telling the poor to pay tithes, with promises that God would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings on them is a big con game.

The Bible says those with less than ten goats or sheep were exempted from paying tithes. God did not take tithes from the poor. Telling the poor and needy that if they don't pay tithes God has cursed them is the ultimate in greed and callousness. Some pastors tell poor church members to pay tithes before their rent or children’s school fees and expect miracles.

If the church as a whole, can confidently say that the monies that are given, whether tithe or offering are being used for the right things as stated in the artical, then the church is nt dying. But presently clearly that is not the issues. Giving no matter what you want to call t, should be done in LOVE, we give to God because we love him and want to spread his name. Let not put fear in people that if they don't give, they will be cursed, because if it came at a price then, I don't think we could afford it. Lets give in love and not in fear.

However,it depends on what you mean by christianity. If you mean the religion based on the life and teaching (preaching) of Jesus, then the answer is no. Why? Because there are a group of people zealously preaching from house to house, (just as Christ and the apostles did), Mark 6:56, Luke 19:5,6; and Acts 20:20.

In fact Christ was called ''Teacher'', (John 1:38, John 13:13). And what did he teach? (Read Matthew 4:23)

So, Rev, true Christianity is not dying. The issue about tithes does not define Christianity. Christians are encouraged to give willingly, (2 Cor 9:7). It is the willing heartfelt voluntary contribution that pleases God. (Luke 21: 1-4). Paying tithes is not a Scriptural requirement for true Christians.

Did Jesus, Mathew and Paul receive tithes? Jesus was from the line of Judah so could not receive tithes. Only Levites from the line of Levi could receive tithes. Though the twelve apostles were men of God, they could not receive tithes because of their tribal lineage. How then can pastors today ask for tithes? Are they Levites? If the apostle Paul is not a Levite so could not take tithes why are some pastors taking tithes? The fact that one is a man of God does not qualify one to receive tithes. Even prophets and other men of God in the Bible, not from the tribe of Levi, could not benefit from tithes.

Did Jesus and his apostles pay tithes?

Tithe was never taken in fish or silver or cash. Paul as a tent-maker was not required to pay tithes. Peter as a fisherman did not pay tithes on fish he caught. That was the law of God. None of the twelve apostles could pay tithes because they were not farmers or shepherds/ herders.

Imagine that a big church pays its watchman a psaltery salary and deduct tithes at source. The watchman out of poverty and frustration committed suicide on the premises of the church. Tithing is good. It can be given to a poor person or some other person in some form of need. It does not necessarily have to go to the pastor. Some pastors know how much their members earn and have a checklist of people who pay tithes and those who do not. People are sanctioned or even suspended from church for not tithing!We cannot win souls for Christ if going to church is all about money. Let's give a break to those who cannot afford to give offertory and tithes and help them cater for the kids in school and feed them. Being a pastor is one of the most lucrative businesses in Ghana now. However, church members are being ejected from their homes, kids are dropping out of school, orphans have turned to the streets etc. Lets take a second look at our Christian values and help the poor and needy. It will reduce armed robbery, prostitution, drug abuse, child abductions etc. Our society is dying because we are losing our African values of lending helping hands and all we concentrate on doing is to amass wealth and show off. Do not crucify the Rev. for his article, lets look at the bigger picture.

Jesus and his apostles did not pay tithes, neither did they accept tithes. The Pharisees obeyed all the 613 mosaic laws, so they paid tithes. Today, Christians are not under the law, so we do not follow the Mosaic Law, as we are under grace and not the law. How come so much emphasis is laid on only tithes but not the other 613 laws? If we have to pay tithes then we have to follow all the laws, like the Pharisees. When a child disobeys the parent, he has to be stoned to death according to the old law. No Christian obeys that law today. However, some hold on to the law of tithing with the might of Samson. Why? Is it the money? The love of money...

This is nothing but manipulation. If the gospel of Christ is about acquiring earthly possessions how come the apostle Paul was not rich? How come John the Baptist, Peter, John and the other apostles did not get financial breakthroughs? Many of Christ's apostles were persecuted and killed. Life was not rosy for them. Were they not blessed men of God? If you believe pastors who tell you that you would prosper financially if you pay tithes, then you need serious Bible study. People like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, LeBron James etc. are very wealthy, but they do not pay tithes, they are not even Christians. If you believe paying tithes would open gates to riches for you, then you are in for great disappointment and cannot carry the cross of Christ

2. However, since the theme of the essay is about "tithes" or "tithing", I think the heading should have reflected that theme. The only direct reference to the heading is way down in the last-but-one line of the very last paragraph of the essay in the satement that "Today, Chritianity is dying in Europe".

3. While the burden of the tithe together with the unfulfillable expectations may be one of the killers of Chritianity, I strongly agree that, indeed, "Chritianity is dying". Christianity is dying not only in European countries but also in Canada. The evidence:

Church buildings in parts of Canada are being converted into residential accommodations -- apartments for rent, or condos for sale. Others are being converted for commercial purposes. Reason: low church attendance, drying up tithes and Sunday contributions. Ultimate reasons:

a) People in the highly literate and advanced countries no longer believe in childish Biblical myths and fables. Conversely, Christianity is still strong in the Africa and South America. And you know why; they are still in the Dark Ages.

b) The many types of "sin" committed by Church leaders including the Vatican staff and the Pope himself.
