Why are we always reactionary in our country? EPA is appealing to developers to seek expert advice... This is one of the most outrageous comments to come out from a supposed director at the EPA! If the EPA knows where these emissions are, it is their absolute duty to inform and educate the public through the assemblies where building permits are obtained and it should be their duty to seek out those who are building in areas with unacceptable emissions. You want to sit in your office for the developers to come there. This is.... God help us.

The detection of rather high concentrations of radon gas at the site means that the area is badly fractured since the Gas is formed in the deep belly of the earth.therefore any high rise building in the area must be properly designed. For those of us in the industry, we were not surprised that the development has shifted else where.this is the right strategic decision to make. The issue is not about mitigating the effects of radon but rather the very poor foundation for those super high rise structures.

Eben,
The real problem is that some scientists at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and now the EPA, have been giving assurances that the area is "livable with the right mitigation measures", without suggesting or actually ensuring that the people who build in the area adopt mitigation measures.
This radon problem in Dunkunaa was first noticed about 1998 when GREDA acquired land in the area, for mass development. At that time emission levels of up to 25,000Bq/m3 were recorded in several places. Assurances of "livability" were given without the necessary measures being taken to ensure the safety of those who were building there. I will bet my bottom penny that none of the people who built in the area adopted any reasonable measures to minimise the concentration of radon gas in their homes.
Today, it is not only high radon emission levels, but "black smoke" as well billowing from the ground, as reported earlier. That has geological significance. The rocks in the area are so badly fractured because it is within a mobile belt, and coupled with the fact that the area sits right on top of numerous microearthquake hypocentres, I don't know why the planning authorities even give planning permission for devlopment in the area.

EPA and Ghana Atomic Energy Commission should publish areas in Ghana with high Radon concentrations. In those areas of high concentration they should come out with building specifications which must be enforced.
