You can not have it both ways, the nature of oil rigging business will definitely disturb the fish, and would move further. You can not eat your cake and have it.These local fishermen should be sent to skills training institutes where they could earn a better livelihood. These guys needs help and the government must step up to its social responsibility to enable those who had depended on fishing all along in these areas to have resourceful lives.

The problem being encountered by the coastal communities has been expected soon as it became known that oil has been discovered in their area. Their economic livelihood depend solely on the sea - the people are mostly petty fishermen, especially in Jomoro - and domestic farming since there are no other jobs because of the lack of development in the area. This is one of the reasons why the chiefs of the communities had earlier asked the government to contribute 10% of the disposable oil revenue for development. The other reason relates to the environmental impact on the communities as a result of the oil production. But their concerns have been met with unfavourable response. And the leadership of the NPP is on record to have been the most vocal in rejecting the chiefs request. Perhaps, since the NPP base is way off the sea they care less about the people who live near the sea. But, unless the west of Cape Three Point, which has been neglected and starved over the years, is developed to enhance employment prospects, the people there will suffer unemployment and untold hardships. For them, the finding of oil in their area is something they wish never happened.
