Burundi Unrest
A prominent Burundi army officer said on Wednesday he was dismissing President Pierre Nkurunziza, whose bid for a third term in office sparked more than two weeks of demonstrations by protesters who said he was violating the constitution.
The statement was immediately dismissed as "a joke" by the president's media adviser.
Major General Godefroid Niyombare, who was fired by Nkurunziza as intelligence chief in February, was speaking at a military barracks to reporters. He was surrounded by several other senior officers in the army and police.
"Regarding President Nkurunziza's arrogance and defiance of the international community which advised him to respect the constitution and Arusha peace agreement, the committee for the establishment of the national concord decide: President Nkurunziza is dismissed, his government is dismissed too," he said.

Senior Burundi army officer says dismisses Preside
Why can't African Politicians relinquish Power peacefully? Are we so selfish and ego-driven that we cannot allow others to rise up to fill our shoes?
Is it because of how we have always viewed political leadership in Africa imperially, dating back to the Colonial times? Or, we simply cannot distinguish contemporary political leadership from the domineering control of our Old monarchies, making us think our Presidents are our new Kings that all must worship, and whom we must allow to reign and lord over us for as long as they wish?
It is about time we began amending our Constitutions to strip our Presidencies of much of their Powers and privileges, so that Presidents would not consider themselves irreplaceable.
This brings back into focus our own (Ghana's) exorbitant, ultra-luxurious ex-gratia afforded to our Politicians, especially the President. So long as we make their Offices so self-serving and allow them to command easy access to our State Assets for manipulation to enrich themselves, we would, forever, be dodged by such recalcitrance of our Presidents to cling on to Power against our Constitution, and the will of the People.
Long Live Ghana!!!

"Why can't African Politicians relinquish Power peacefully"?
G.K, maybe the Burundi President should have declared himself President for life following Nkrumah template and I think you would have supported him.
Why are you against the coup that ousted Nkrumah but you seem to support this coup? Both Nkrumah and the President of Burundi were trying to cling to power by abusing the constitution they came into power with.
I am really surprised somebody like you who have always spoke against Nkrumah removal is now supporting this coup, this is is paradoxical on your part.
It was not good on Ghana to remove Nkrumah for perpetuating his rule through one party and President for life system but you think this guy from Burundi should be removed for trying to stay in power.
Think about it, it least this guy from Burundi has not stripped the citizens of Burundi the choice of voting for somebody else compared to Nkrumah.

Police Burundi Protest3
Street battles and gunfire erupted again in the capital on Thursday as protesters against President Pierre Nkurunziza rejected his calls for calm in Burundi, an ethnic tinderbox with a history of civil war and genocide.
The Burundi Red Cross said two protesters were killed as soldiers and police fired tear gas and shots in the air in confrontations with scores of young men throwing rocks and burning makeshift barricades in the roads.
That brings to 20 the number of deaths witnessed by the aid group, spokesman Alexis Manirakiza said, during almost a month of marches and a failed coup by Burundians trying to stop Nkurunziza securing what they say is an unconstitutional third term in office.
Another emergency official said the overall toll in the violence, which many fear might re-open old wounds between Burundi's Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups, could be double that.
Nkurunziza, 51, a former sports lecturer, appears unfazed by the crisis, playing in a soccer match with friends on Wednesday shortly before making a televised address to the nation.
In the speech, he stressed the need for national unity, saying Burundi's bloody past, including a civil war that ended in 2005 after the deaths of 300,000 people, could not be ignored.
"No Burundian wants to revive the tensions of ethnic division or any other nature," Nkurunziza, who has mixed Hutu-Tutsi parentage, said. "The blood that was spilt in the past has taught us a lesson."
Protesters rejected his words.
"We don't consider this a speech for the nation," 42-year-old Jean-Claude Gakiza told Reuters. "Someone who violates the constitution is against Burundians. All we want now is that he gives up his third term."
In another area, there were chaotic scenes as soldiers and police tried to restore order.
"You cannot throw stones at police," one soldier told the protesters. "We are near them. You will hurt us."
NIGHT OF SHOOTING
Thursday's violence followed a night of heavy gunfire in the restive neighbourhood of Musaga, where residents spoke of hours of running battles between police and gangs of youths.
"There was shooting through the night," said Musaga resident Bosco, 28, who did not want to give his last name.
Pascal Nyabenda, chairman of the ruling CNDD-FDD party, dismissed the marchers as paid thugs.
"Those are youth who are paid," he said. "It's like a job." He did not say where the purported funding came from.
With more than 110,000 refugees in neighbouring Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania, where at least 33 have died of cholera, regional leaders have been calling for calm and restraint on all sides but to little effect.
South Africa, which played a central role in brokering the 2005 peace, said this week the June 26 presidential election at the heart of the crisis should be postponed indefinitely.
So far, Nkurunziza's only concession has been to postpone next week's local and parliamentary elections to June 5.
He argues that his ambitions do not break a two-term limit in the constitution as his first term, in which he was appointed by parliament rather than directly elected, does not count.
Kwame Nkrumah started this evil of President for life and one-party state and this evil is still spreading in Africa. See what is happeng in Gambia, Togo, Uganda, Zimbabwe and many parts in Africa. CPP was the first party in Africa to rig elections claiming they won 99.97%

The presidency has become a lying cafe

"The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Joe Osei Owusu, on Wednesday March 2 alleged on the floor of parliament that First Lady Lordina Mahama was putting up a building at the premises of the Flagstaff House for personal and private use.
According to the MP, Mrs Mahama is using her position and office at the Flagstaff House to operate an NGO. I wanted to observe that one of the acts of impunity is the president's wife building a warehouse within the four walls of the compound for her private NGO.One of the pieces of evidence supporting the claim of impunity – doing acts that are not sanctioned by the rules of law – is that the First Lady has put up a warehouse within the four walls of the Flagstaff House ostensibly for use of her NGO," he insisted."
This is the allegation the member of Parliament from Bekwai made against the first lady of the land and instead of the Presidency coming out and flatly denying it, it rather lexoconically resorted to rodomontade platitutes to serve us every dish from its LYING CAFE and expect us to eat them and leave them with gratuities. What seems like a denial is rather subtly being accepted because the public can verify whether there is a new addition to the original building so we got this response:
"The attention of the Office of the President has been drawn to a mischievous claim being circulated by minority Members of Parliament through some media houses that the First Lady has constructed a private warehouse within the precincts of the Flagstaff House- the seat of government. There cannot be, and there has not been any private construction within the Presidential Household. What is referred to as a warehouse is actually a storehouse for the use of the Office of the President, and constructed by the State."
The relevant sentence in this quote is the last sentence, "What is referred as a warehouse is actually a storehouse for the use of the President and constructed by the state" So the Member of Parliament from Bekwai is not lying and there has been a new building at the Flagstaff compound?
The Presidency can call it whatever they want to call it, a warehouse, a storehouse, a chicken coop or whatever, was this storehouse part of the original plan of the Flagstaff house? What is the President going to use the storehouse for? To sell contracts to the highest bidder and store stolen goods?
We spent over $100 million to build this Presidential Palace, are we supposed to believe there were no rooms designated to store stationaries and other Presidential provisions?
So if my friend Joe Osei Wusu have said a storehouse has been constructed at the premises of the Flagstaff house, would the President and his propaganda machine had accepted it? Seems the President not only hate the word INCOMPETENT but also hates the word WAREHOUSE. Warehouse store goods and the storehouse built at the Flagstaff house is also storing goods so what is the difference? Accra looks despicably nasty as a result of filthy attachments to properly constructed buildings along our streets. What does the presidency need a storehouse for in this huge edifice anyways?
When did the state construct this warehouse, sorry Mr President, I keep repeating warehouse instead of storehouse knowing you don't like that word at the seat of government and apart from the President and his staff, who else knows about it?
Wouldn't it had been prudent for members of Parliament to have been informed to avoid speculation? This administration like to do things without following laid down procedures and when their attention is called about it, it resorts to its usual propaganda denials.
How much was paid to construct the warehouse, oh sorry, storehouse, the President hates the word warehouse. I know the President or the first lady didn't pay for the construction of this building so where did the money come from and who approved it?
So the President decides he wants a warehouse, sorry again, a storehouse for his wife to store her NGO goods so he unilaterally decided to add a chicken coop to the Flagstaff house to mess up the aesthetic beauty of place or this is going to be used to raise chickens as Ndc promised to turn the place to if voted into power? Hopefully this will be the last building to be added to the Flagstaff house. Don't build a barn inside that compound to raise goats, please?

Mahama, $306 Million Can Build Three Hospitals, Stop The Stealing

The Mahama administration intention to renovate the Ridge hospital and increase the services offered by this hospital including an additional 220 beds is a noble one but as with every Ghana developmental project, this particular endevour takes the cake in terms of corruption. I have done a research into the cost of new hospitals built in Texas USA where labour cost is at least ten times what pertains in Ghana and with $306 million dollars, we can build three new modern hospitals even if we don't change the labour cost between Ghana and USA.
Ghana’s continuous population growth means that more social facilities, including hospitals and clinics would have to be constructed and existing ones need to be expanded to meet the growing demand for quality health care.We support the development of Ghana’s health sector and indeed, every other sector and we appreciate the need to expand and improve the facilities so as to increase productivity. However, we are alarmed at a recent report at the Ridge hospital and shocked at the amount of money that is supposedly being spent on the expansion of the Ridge hospital from a 200 bed to a 420 bed capacity at a questionable cost of $306 million.
One would wonder how it is possible for Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote to build a state of the art 1000 bed capacity hospital, a project which will be implemented via his Dangote Foundation, at an estimated cost of N2 billion ($12.38 million) in Kano State, Nigeria; a country with similar economic situation as Ghana whilst Ridge hospital would add just 220 bed to the existing 200 beds at a whopping cost of $306 million.
The Children’s Medical Center Legacy in Plano, Texas has a total building area (sq. ft.) of 328,000, Construction cost/sq. ft. of $280, total construction cost (excluding land) of $92,000,000 and sits on a 84-acre site. It has a total of 240 patient beds, and four state-of-the-art emergency facilities. The facility features three above-ground floors plus a lower garden level, 72 single-patient rooms, and four operating rooms (plus shelled space for eight more), full-service diagnostics, an urgent/emergency care center, a lobby café, full-service cafeteria, chapel, gift shop, family resource center, and various patient and family lounges. The new building can be expanded by two additional floors, with long-term plans to add another five-story, two-wing bed tower.
The new Methodist Richardson Medical Center – opening April 14, 2014 – is a spectacular 125-bed hospital (with shell space for 50 more) featuring a dedicated Women’s Pavilion, well-appointed L and D suites, a level III NICU, a High-Risk Breast Surveillance Clinic, and robotic surgery, plus conveniences like free valet parking. With 400 physicians in 35 specialties, from cardiology and oncology to neurosurgery and orthopedics, the future of health care is bright at your new hospital for life.
It will also have inpatient beds related to an intermediate care unit, an ICU, medical and surgical care, telemetry, and labor and delivery. This new hospital has an estimated cost of US$120 million and has a square-foot of 266,250. It will have a cost/sq. ft. of US$451.
Then I read in the media about the story of Ridge hospital renovation and expansion. I was initially dismissive of the over US$300 million monetary figure suggested in the report. From what I read, the expansion was going cover 200 more rooms. Not a lot of information was provided as to the facilities and amenities that the building was going to have. A day later, a friend of mine called me and expressed alarm at a story he had read concerning how much Ghana was purportedly paying for the expansion a medical facility. After a brief discussion with my friend, I started searching for more information about the circumstances surrounding the Ridge hospital renovation. This is what led me to the curiosity of looking into the market value of buildings and facilities described above.
Taking one of the facilities describe above as an example, this means Ghana can have three new medical centers similar to the new Methodist Medical Center in Richardson, Texas (please take time to review the link above). Why then is Ghana not pursuing something obviously better for the nation? Imagine having these types of facilities in three major regional capitals. Why would that not be the desired focus of the government?
The story of Ridge hospital renovation and expansion carries with it multiple discouraging and disparaging feelings and thoughts. Who in his right mind would want to swerve a his or her own nation by hundreds of millions of dollars. I guess the other question is what sort of people would allow a small group of people to steal over US$140 million when they, the people, do not have water to drink, electricity for their homes and businesses, good roads to drive on, a good medical facility to go to when they get sick, etc.? Are the authorities involved in the theft to blame or the apathetic citizenry to blame?
My thoughts are that the folly of being wise in a society where ignorance and apathy is bliss is not worse than the slow death from scarcity and despair in the midst of blatant corruption and looting. The naked truth is that corruption and looting of the nation's coffers can only be curtailed if, and only if, those involved are prosecuted, lose all their assets (including all accomplices) and jailed. The punishments should be very severe for people in positions of authority. This will go a long way in, at least, curbing some of the corrupt practices.
The challenge here is that the populace should demand this accountability. They have the power to address the looting and corruption. They elected the members of parliament and president. I am sure all Ghanaians suffer the same lack of water, electricity, car-worthy roads, decent medical facilities and amenities, etc. A member of parliament from your constituency living lavishly does little to alleviate your impoverish situation if you do not demand; it does not matter if you are from the same party as the member of parliament. unless you seek, you will never find. And unless you ask, it shall never be given to you. How is that difficult?

On his recent tour to Ashanti region to inspect the non existent ongoing projects in the region, President "YENTIE OBIAA" Dramamani Mahamah twenty car motorcade entourage blared the newly released Daddy Lumba's song, "Yentie obiaa" on mounted speakers on top of four wheel drive cars that escorted the President from the Kumasi Airport to the NDC Kumasi headquarters where he supposedly blurted his diarrhea of the mouth insults to Kumasi residents or Asantes depending on which 'doctored' tape you have listened to.
The President, a Gonja who speaks Twi fluently, courtesy of his marriage to Lordina cannot be excused for not understanding the meaning of "Yentie obiaa" which means "WE WILL NOT LISTEN TO ANYBODY". At a time when the meat on the bone of Ghana's economy has been chewed and Dramani Mahama and his Ndc looting clan are sucking the marrow from the bone, it is uncaring , cheeky and an insult to Ghanaians for Dramani Mahama to have this pompous attitude.
According to sources close to the President, not only is Dramani Mahama in love with this song and that I am not surprised if you watch the video of this song with Daddy Lumba doing his usual grinding with the scantily clad young girls, something the elevator eyed Dramani has not grown out of despite his middle age status.
The sad part is that, NDC intend to use the "YENTIE OBIAA" song as their official campaign song for 2016.This doesn't surprise me a bit because the same party used "ede bi keke" or "YEEKO DI BI KEKE"(we are going to spend your money haphazardly) a clear message that they will involve themselves in corrupt endevours, Ghanaians still voted for them so why not continue to insult our intelligence.
According to the Ashanti Regional Minister, the song was specifically chosen because of the lyrics and the message it carries, which, he said, was in line with the President?s tour. What message does it carry, Mr. Regional Minister? That the Ashanti Region did not vote for him so he will not listen to them? The MCE of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu said almost the same thing; "Good songs certainly play vital roles during campaign seasons and as the 2016 looms around the corner, the NDC has stepped up their game by revealing that they would be adopting Daddy Lumba's song "Yentie Obiaa" as their official campaign song.
Mr. Kojo Bonsu, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer, made this revelation last week at the Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi." Mahama should stop thumbing his nose at us and then cowardly backpeddle like Micheal Jackson in his moonwalk video by employing his schoolboy Ministers to defend him as Okudzeto Ablakwah did on this issue.
“Where from all these government officials who are saying the President likes the song and so on; saying we will adopt it as our campaign song. I think we have to be serious because this is totally needless. Has the campaign team been formed? I think it was miscalculated and not tactful. We have to read the mood of the country… What I am not impressed about is the president's handlers and all those who were speaking about the issue," Hon Okudzeto said on Radio Gold’s political platform, Alhaji and Alhaji"
Did Okudzeto speak with the President before issuing this denial? If the President did not like the song why did the President's convoy is reported to have blared the popular song on loud speakers ostensibly to cast insinuations at critics?
After telling Ghanaians he will not listen to anybody, Dramani Mahama's administration is organizing an Economic forum and has invited all Ghanaians of different political persuasions to attend and offer them advice about how best to solve the myriad of Economic problems confounding the country.
The largest Opposition party, The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has boycotted the 'National Economic Forum'." Announcing the decision to boycott the event at a press conference in Accra on Monday, the National Chairman of the party Paul Afoko said the NPP is committed towards consensus building and partnership in national development but would not be part of a "deliberate propaganda and PR gimmick, to hoodwink the good people of Ghana in the face of monumental hardships we have been subjected to."
According to the Chairman of the party Paul Afoko,NPP received an invitation from the seat of government to be part of a National Economic Forum that is scheduled to begin on 12th of May 2014. The letter signed by the executive secretary to the president was dated the 2nd of May, 2014. In spite of the short distance between the flagstaff house and the NPP party headquarters, it took more than a week for the letter to be hand delivered. "This shows a lack of seriousness on the part of the government towards this important national exercise." Mr Afoko said.
Mr Afoko further wrote,As a credible opposition party we shall continue to provide workable alternatives to the management of our national economy. Governance is a serious undertaking and it is expected of the President to attach the highest level of seriousness to it.We love Ghana intensely and we love to serve but it is clear this is a PR gimmick and we therefore unequivocally decline the invitation to participate.
As usual with these NDC young zealots who have found themselves in the corridors of power by issuing idiotic statements, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Kojo Twum Boafo, has dared the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to attend the National Economic Forum and prove their mettle if they have ideas.According to him, government can do with or without the NPP to find a lasting solution to the present socio-economic challenges in the country.
“NPP has no ideas; the formula they used when in government will not work today,” he stressed.
Mr Twum Barimah, if the NDC knew NPP cannot contribute any meaningful solutions confronting the country, why invite them in the first place? Will it not be a waste of time and Taxpayers money to house and feed at least ten people NPP would have sent to Akosombo for four days at a time when government cannot even pay its workers? This is not logical and logic seems to be one ingredient that is missing from this clueless Dramani Mahamah kakistocracy administration.
