What is the employment rate in Ghana. What percentage of the Ghanaian population earn that amount over ten years? That is a huge some of money for a poor country so please don't give us this rot. After 4 years in government your are paid over 2-300,000Ghs. Some will continue to earn salaries, drive government cars, house allowance and all the benefits that come with this non-performing job. And you think this is not immoral. By the way where do we get the money to pay all these people and why not the doctors, nurses, teachers and pharmacist. You greedy, self serving, bastards. Keep piling the debt and ask the rest to tighten their belts. Continue to take bribes, fly first class, send your kids to schools abroad and pile debt on the unborn Ghanaian, but at this rate the future looks grin and your reward is not too far from sight!

CRYPTOCRACY AND CRONY CAPITALISM IN GHANA. This non-performing ex-minister Oquaye is defending the indefensible. Every 4 years you guys plunder state coffers under the pretext of Article 71. Ghanaians must hold a referendum on this non obligatory ex gratia and finally abrogate it. Oquaye, your abominable behaviour is inexcusable.
In Ghana everything is shrouded in secrecy due to sinister forces and powers in disguise. For the love of money they (NDC and NPP) condone and connive. It has become crony capitalism and has nothing to do with party politics. This is “cryptocracy“ to say the least for a few elites or thieves who have been given the key to the treasury of our national coffers. To put it blunt this is daylight robbery at gun/pen point.
The present situation in Ghana is like flipping a coin – you either get NDC or NPP (head (n) or tail) but the irony in the whole matter is no matter how you flip the coin it falls on the same side. NDC and NPP are the same side of the coin. It is like in Greek mythology; Ghanaians are stuck between Scylla and Charybdis. These monsters of sea both devour you. Boy oh boy, it is like having to choose between a rock and hard place or find yourself between the devil and the deep blue sea. Either way it is not pretty. Ghanaians are PUNKED!!!!
Psalm 14:1
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. .... to such a man nothing would be more dark and distressing than anything which ...
Now to all silly ass good for nothing MPs who are trying to justify one fraud with another. I say what a scandalous analogy from dumbasses. I can only say this; only a thief knows his fellow thief or partner in crime. How can you exchange one swindle (scam) for another? This happens only in blockhead MPs like we have parading the corridors of power in Ghana. In a sum our so called MPs are good for nothing but masters of disasters like locusts.
Elsewhere salaries are being cut but not in Ghana. From Cyprus, Malawi, Kenya, Singapore etc. Only in Ghana MPs have the following mouth watering largesse at the cost of Ghanaian tax payers?
Free Bungalows
Free telephone
Free garden boy
Free watchman
Free cook
Free baby-sitter
Interest free $50,000 for car /car maintenance allowance
Free driver/Chauffeur
Free petrol
Travel allowances/per diem
Committee allowance for chatting and devouring Chinchinga
After all these freebies they still cry for ex-gratia. It is high time to abrogate the ex-gratia. It is long overdue.
What a SWIZZ! IT'S A SWIZZ! Shame on you white collar thieves. This is most abominable and nothing short of that.
“If any MP truly cares about Ghana and its people, they will refuse these payments. In 2009 President Mills froze ex-gratia payments because of the public outcry they caused but in the end, the MPs won - and they are still winning.”
Proverbs 19:28
A corrupt witness (in this case Ghana MPs) mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.
Freebies for state officials wherever you look; but no money for teachers, doctors, nurses, farmers and youth employment scheme etcwho the pulse of the nation. Hmmm! This is grotesque in its purest form. President Mahama must stop this crazy deal for the sake of the underprivileged in our society. Don’t let this monstrous deal get wings to fly. A word to the wise is in the north pardon enough.

Oh Ghana, this is sickening and disheartening. Are there no right thinking politicians in Ghana? Is there not even one politician who can see what is wrong with this filthy amount to be paid to these greedy politicians?
Ei! Wonders shall never end. Just look at the political scene how all the MPs have gone absolutely silent because they have ears but they can't hear, eyes have they but they can't
see, big mouths they have but at this crucial moment they cannot talk, they are living in their own world and as a result have become blind to realities in Ghana.
Where are the NPPs,and the NDCs who harddly appear not to see eye to eye with each other on various topical issues. But strangely enough when it comes to 'aboa sika', they bury their supposed differences and the mathematical formula of one plus one is proved wrong, the answer is no more two but ONE. Ei MY PEOPLE!! Look at THEM, for the defence of the ex-gratia money there is no difference between NPP and NDC.
Now my fellow Ghanaians this is where the rest of the population have to put on their God given thinking caps. Why is the ordinary Ghanaian fighting his fellow Ghanaian for the GREEDY POLITICIAN to enjoy?
Why are you hating your fellow Ghanaian for the GREEDY POLITICIAN to trample upon your freedom and deprive you of your reward for your hard work?
The money that belongs to our teachers, nurses, artisans, lecturers, farmers, doctors just to name a few, are all being syphoned to the pockets of these GREEDY POLICIANS in the form of very unreasonable allowances unheard of in any deveoloped country : 4x4 cars, allowances for housing , petrol, security, garden boy, cook, just to name a few of unreasonable payments made by the government to these crooks called MPs and former
MPs ( all of whom I classify under the umbrella of GREEDY
POLITICIANS ).
Ghanaians be reminded that nothing on earth set up by man is set in stone such that it cannot be amended to reflect the changing trends of our time. Even the Almighty God who created us and never intended us to sin, at a point in time realising how mankind was perishing stepped in to make changes to His own plan for manking by sending his Son to die to save us. With this in mind WHAT STOPS THE GOVT to consider a referendum on the Almighty ARTICLE 71 of our Constitution, most loved by our GREEDY MPs, of course for their own selfish and parochial interest and other POLITICIANS, to reflect the changes in our dynamic world to inject ordinary common sense( which is not common to common people but is often neglected but is very very essential)into our political system.
Are our politicians so ignorant as not to be abreast with current trend of economic order in the world?
Mr President Mahama, with all due respect, please cast your eyes on the poor people of Ghana who lined up on their hungry stomach, to vote these people, these people, these GREEDY MPs to Parliament only for them to be stabbed in the back. The only thing you can wisely do in the spirit of Solomon of biblical times is to embark on a referndum on Almighty Article 71 of the Constitution. I trust in your humility and gentleness to fight for the poor Ghanaian workers as against the insensitivity and selfishness demonstrated by the foolish utterances of the so called professors and former MPS who only care about their stomach.
Mr President Mahama, I trust that you will kindly heed to the many outpouring of emotions being expressed by Ghanaians both far and near to act on this very sensitive topic of the Ex- Gratia payment which in reality cannot be sustained in any economy including that of UK, US and other developed country.

To all of the confused Sisters and Brothers who call NDC members NKRUMAHISTS, here is clear evidence that they are not. When Samia refused to accept the huge pay increase, she lost her seat in Parliament, President Mills decided to cut some of the parliamentary perks, mysteriously he died, leaving no one in Parliament to defend the toiling, suffering MASSES.
These neo-colonial NDC&NPP politrickcians in league with their imperialist masters, will continue to use divide and conquer tactics, their favorite being tribalism, to control the people like the Fulani controlling cattle. If you don't believe me, wait till election time and you will see and hear the same people who are now complaining, will be the same people who will be cheering these political pronouns, when they ride around promising them the same old sweet nothings.
I do not have to think about it, I know that the Ghanaian Masses will eventually wake up and realize that it is time to unite in the name of Ghana's survival, and send both NDC&NPP out of Ghana politics, they are ideologically bankrupt and morally corrupt.

These fools have closed their hearts and ears to listen to the citizens they are supposed to protect and are just interested to line their pockets with our scarce resources and the only way these idiots called Politicians will learn is a popular uprising by Ghanaian civilians to march to Parliament house and the Flagstaff house and throw these fools out and institute a government by the people for the people and not this fake democratic rule going on in Ghana where the leaders are just interested in amassing wealth.
The problem is that, Ghanaians unlike Nigerians are timid and as much as most of us hate Military rule, it is getting to that point where people will embrace a 1979 like Military intervention for a short period and get rid of these thieves by sending them toi meet their maker lining these Politicians up at Teshie range and putting lead between their eyes, THIEVES.
The only way these fools will reform is a coup d'etat and as much as we don't want it, it will be the only way these thieves masquerading as Politicians will get the message. Prof. Oquaye is a disappointment."He insisted that being a legislator was a contract, not a long term job offer." NONSENSE, they were paid their salaries for four years with benefits and some of these fools have received this benefit five times since 1996. Bagbin has received this loot five times amounting to almost $350,000. How much can Ghanaian poor continue to stomach this nonsense without pushing these thieves into the sea?
"OWUO SISI ANSO AMPA", these Politicians are not listening to advice and reform their ways the only time they will get the message is when they are tied to the stakes with the Army ready to pump some hot lead into their old wrinkled bodies.

If these are the kind of leaders we have in this country then God save us. He does not see anything wrong with milking the state coffers of so much money whilst the majority of the poeple on whose back they rode into parliament are living in abject poverty.Who signed the so called contract with them? As a lawyer, he should know that permanent workers receive appointment letters which form the basis of a contract.I blame those who do all kinds of things to get these men and women into office. They get into office, enjoy all the trappings of power, get paid so much and at the end of four years collect over Ghc200,000 as ex-gratia. Politics has become a cash-cow.

Some of the comments here blame the level of corruption on the so-called "whiteman's system". The whiteman's system works well in most democracies of the world---with very good healthcare, educational systems, etc. Before Ghana's independence in 1957, it was very easy to do business in any gov't office by any citizen, without strings attached. The same cannot be said of post-independence Ghana. After Independence, the leaders who were supposed to help Kwame Nkrumah build our nation became very corrupt, selfish, & egocentric. Since then, there have been one group of leadership after another failing to clean up the corruption; putting their interest above the common good of the citizenry: hence despite all the nation's wealth & resources, the level of poverty continues to get worse & worse. What a SHAME!

This is yet another glaring pointer to the fact that all our politicians have lost the plot and are out of touch with the realities of life in Ghana. If this argument was coming from any other person, I would have understood. I am really shocked the Prof Oquaye (a pastor and law professor) is making this argument. Higher compensation due to risk involved? How about the police man who is putting his life at risk in order to keep all of us (including politicians) safe from armed robbers. How about the soldiers who are currently in Mali putting their lives at risk to ensure that the jihadists are stopped from matching all the way to Accra. How about the GRIDCO technicians who are climbing tall transmission towers to ensure that electrical power is available and reliable. Please, Prof. Ghanaians are not fools. We deserve better. Dont forget that MPs begged for our votes in order to go to parliament. We did not beg them to go and represent them

Contract indeed Mike!!. To be a legislature is a choice made by self to serve your constituent through healthy debate on national issues. By so doing you intend to invest time and energy on bills that will better serve the interest of your constituent to whom you owe allegiance. So Prof. at best your contract is with your constituent but not the state. That is why some are voted out of office for non performance. Having served as a legislator though, I think the state owes it as an obligation to see you off by packaging your benefits as lump sum to sustain you while jobless. To argue therefore that you deserve because it is a contract honor by the state is completely misplaced. The ordinary electorate should learn from this and never to kill each other for our greedy politicians. God bless Ghana.

Dosen't the government pay these MP's monthly salaries while in office? Why should they get all this extra cash just for serving the nation for four years. Nobody forced them to ran for Parliament in the first place anyway. The notion of them being in parliament is a contract is a serious joke that isn't even funny to make anybody laugh. The Hon Prof. is demeaning the contribution of all public officers, especially public servants, to the economy of Ghana. Even if the job of an MP is a short term contract renewable by the pleasure of the electorate, it is also the view of the general public that the work of public servants are based on contract, whether long term or not. A seniormost public servant having worked for 30 years and over will not get that amount (C200,000)doled out to MPs after serving for just 4 years. This is a despicable arrogance of the part of people elected into Parliament. Is there any wonder that these law makers can not see or do anything, by way of enacting laws, to curtail corruption in Government? They won't do it because it is a grab-what-you-can-galore in Ghana now. What kind of contract this is I don't know. If it is a contract, as this man claims, then it is a bad one that needs to be revoked.
This payment is an example of how the people elected to serve have used their positions to lord over people and also find all means to get moneys paid to them. Parliamentarians have gotten all kinds of loans for what God knows. By the way, does any body know if the many loans these MPs have received are paid back? Where is our modesty as a developing poor nation? Is anybody paying attention the struggling schools and Hospitals needing all kind s of help? Where in the world do out-going MPs get paid? The other day, it was grand settlement for the President leaving office. This is stealing from the people.
If there is a law requiring these payments then that law needs revisiting.
