God, how disheartening to hear such news in Ghana. MP's keep getting fat paychecks & these poor mothers & babies dying bcos of poor healthcare system. Something is really wrong with this picture.

This figure does not include children in remote villages where births are not recorded. We are still very backward with priority list upside-down. We are still living in the 12th century; still very primitive.

Our biggest problem is our order of priorities. We have no value for education and health so our national priorities are expensive funerals, chieftancy matters, celebrations and festivals. We are retrogressing all the time.

In the 21st Century, infant and young child mortality of this order is unacceptable and merits investigation into how the first thousand days (i.e. from pregnancy through to the child's second birthday) is being managed in the Greater Accra (and other) region.

Clearly this has implications for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) agenda and early infant feeding practices and infectyious disease as well as low birth weight and other forms of undernutrition that begin with the mother even before pregnancy must be involved. What this means is that reproductive health policies and practices in the region fall far short of what one would expect.

Health and nutrition education and the management of pregnancy should be optimum to preduce these figures and also reduce the high maternal deaths reported. A more whollistic approach to mother and baby care is what is needed.
