FDA destroys 18 cartons of unwholesome fish

Officials of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Upper West Region have seized and destroyed 18 cartons of unwholesome fish worth one thousand and eighty Ghana cedis belonging to Wiziena ventures.

The officials seized the unwholesome fish at Jeffissi in the Sissala West district of the Upper West Region during their routine check in the district.

According to the Acting Upper West Regional Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Gordon Akurugu they were on the routine check in the Sissala West District when they saw people gathered in front of a cold store at Jeffissi belonging to Wiziena ventures to buy unfrozen fish.

Mr. Akurugu stated that by the law and mandate given to the Food and Drugs Authority, they are to ensure public health and safety of the people hence the need to seize the unwholesome fish and destroy them.

He said the fish was sold at the time when the quality and safety could not be guaranteed.

He also revealed that lights had gone off for three days which culminated into the poor storage of the fish.

In all, 18 cartons of the unwholesome fish amounting to one thousand eighty Ghana cedis (GHC1, 080) were seized.

They were brought to Wa, dumped at the Siriyiri refuse site and destroyed. Mr. Akurugu further stated that the owners of the unwholesome fish would not be allowed to go scot free but would be made to face the full rigors of the law.

He advised consumers to be alert and check the safety of items they buy.
