Do you think it is everybody who can be a teacher, set questions, grade them to international standards. I remember during Jerry's time, teachers went on strike and people thought he could use PDC people to teach. That was a near diasaster. Even those who came could not cook for the students.Who is going to train the recruits to teach? How many of the recruits can teach maths and sciences? Some teachers are not very serious because government pretend to pay them and they also pretend to work.
Why should some teachers use their little pay to buy sometimes chalk or repair cracked chalkboards. The rot at GES and ministry of Education is a lot and Mahama has to set his priorities right. Unfortunately, these politicians who are better paid for no work done can take their kids to private schools and the poor rather suffer.

Do you remember what Kwami Alorvi of NAGRAT once said? He said that the teachers on strike when pressured to and teach and their grievances are not met, they are with the students in class and can teach them the wrong stuff like teaching them that a grasshopper is a helicopter. Did parliamentarians who boycotted sittings get their salaries and 50,000 Cedis rent advance?
In Europe and the Americas that you made refereces to, the labor department work effectively and workers are paid as they work. What about Ghana? Put pressure on Mahama to solve the problems because your suggestions will not work well.

Remember also that varsity graduates who have studied specific course for 3 or 4 years are much better equipped to teach in that area than a teacher who did just a very small fraction of the same field.

For instance, I did Engineering, but could easily handle Maths, Add-Maths, Physics and Chemistry at the WASS, those days in Accra New-Town.

Again, all of those tens of thousands of Ghanaian teachers who flooded Nigeria as teachers were mostly varsity. I was in Ibadan as a Physics teacher. My friend and course mate taught Maths in Abeokuta, but most were in Lagos city!

Will the national service people be capable to set up the science practicals questions? Who shall go to the marking centers to mark and grade the exams after they have been written by students.
This strike action did not start overnight and Mahama should have better handled it.

Was it not this same Ayariga who indicated yesterday that by his checks teachers were still at post so there was no cause for alarm? So when did he realize that indeed they have deserted the classrooms?

What I have learnt so far from Ayariga is take everything he says with a pich of salt. You need a grace period before believing anything he says.

If we have a lot of graduates walking about without jobs, it is only reasonable and rational to replace any person who is not prepared to work with another who is prepared to do so.

I do not see any better alternative.

How many service personnel can do what you are saying. If there are thousands of unemployed graduates, why are some classrooms in some parts without teachers? Even sometimes, we have unprofessional teachers who are squared pegs in round holes. What you are saying is like people saying when Doctors go on strike, nurses can handle the sick. Is it true?
The teachers have genuine cases and it is up to the government to solve them or we risk ruining the educational fortunes of our kids. These agitations are the result of the unreasonable pays, allowances and ESB w given MPs and other politicians for no work done, except to go to parliament, boycott sittings and others acting just like rubber stamps. Do you know that some dedicated teachers work for months without being paid, especially if one is new on the field. You don't need to blindly support the government even if what they do is bad.

The issue is real disaster waiting to happen! If National Service personnel are drafted in, the nation is going to witness exam malpractice,so massive that the entire exam may have to be cancelled.

The issue is real disaster waiting to happen! If National Service personnel are drafted in, the nation is going to witness exam malpractice,so massive that the entire exam may have to be cancelled.

How many Service Personnel, for example, have been trained to set up equipment for Science practicals and supervise the conduct of the exam? Will some of the invigilators not condone cheating for some personal gain? Teachers form the bulk of examiners: what will happen when they extend the strike to that aspect of the exam?

Government must seriously engage teachers and others on strike to find a solution in the shortest possible time.
