  Collecting bribes from drivers is actually number one duty of police officers in Ghana. I was in Ghana last year and I was stopped every Saturday from Kumasi to Kuntanase near Lake Bosomtwe simply because I was using a DV tag. My crime was I did not have fire extinguisher in my car whereas the police cars have no such a device.

  A group of armed men on Tuesday night attacked residents of Kumasi as they seized some streets in the metropolis amidst sporadic shootings.
  
  About 30 to 50 half-naked gunmen on motorbikes fired several warning shots using AK-47 and pump action guns as they laid siege on the helpless residents.
  
  The Hollywood-style action left many vehicles damaged as motorists crashed into each other while attempting to escape the onslaught which took place at about 7 p.m.
  
  The incident occurred mainly between the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology [Tech] and Anloga Junction road on the main Kumasi-Accra road.
  
  Eye-witnesses believed the robbers were reacting to recent police raids on suspected criminals hiding at the Affordable Housing Project Site at Asokore Mampong.
  
  Many people, including a nurse got injured as they fled the attack.
  
  Traumatized, a resident named Maame Birago told Nhyira News she nearly collapsed upon seeing the armed men.
  
  “I was going to the salon to re-touch my hair [and] all of a sudden I heard gun shots and a lot of people are running…They were many, some of them were wearing boxer shorts and other things so I also decided to run for my life and that of my child.
  
  "I nearly collapsed. I even fell on the floor so I just got up and run for my life,” Birago narrated.
  
  An unidentified student of the Ghana National Academy also described the incident as “horrifying”.
  
  “They were not using magazine made (guns). The sounds of those weopons was different from that of those manufactured locally because I have seen local pistols before,” he recounted.
  
  Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Police Command say they have arrested over 100 suspected criminals in the past few weeks with reinforcement from Accra.
  
  Regional Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyening in an interview with Nhyira Fm, strongly suspected Tuesday's attack was to divert the attention of police and weaken their resolve to clear the region of miscreants.

  What favor are you talking about. Ghanaians know what corruption is. The police are getting good SINGLE SPINE SALARY. They don't need to collect bribes. Look at the accidents on our roads.

  Rose Bio Attinga, when a police officer was caught on camera on the Haatcho Kwabenya road, an innocent overseas visitor who was at the scene was subjected to a humiliating treatment, detained at Kwabenya Police station for almost 6 hours because he was holding a camera. His camera was seized. The police took his camera to a camera studio to search his camera for evidence of photo capture images. Nothing was found and in the end the visitor (British Citizen) was allowed to go the next day. He reported the case to the out-going police chief, yet nothing came out of it. Given the fact that the visitor had to return to the UK he left.
  
  The images/video eventually appeared on the internet. If you are interested and want to take action, use Google to search the web for Kwabenya Police Episode and you will find the evidence.
  
  The person who captured the image disappeared on the scene and the innocent visitor was maltreated.
  
  That is typical Ghana police on camera. It is not new, Rose Bio Attinga
