Healthcare system broken, Energy sector in shambles, Tertiary institutions churning out under-prepared graduates , Prolification of corrupt churches stealing from the vulnerable and the hopeless, and promising them of a "better place" somewhere. I have been following Kwaku's reactions on this thread and,sad to say, all he does is insult or churn out lies. Let us avoid insults on this site.I am a retired teacher of more than four decades in various institutions in Ghana and outside Africa. Teachers have either been taken for granted or paid well in various places depending on what the policies of the countries on education has been. So long as people like Kwaku will spend their nights to produce children who should be taught at various levels by teachers, we should also consider giving them wages and accord them the respect they deserve. This is what the Nigerian leader of their teachers union told their house of Reps in Abuja in the presence of the great Obasanjo in the 90's. Baba agreed that they should be given what they had demanded. Govt please wake up.

while I am happy that both leadership of NAGRAT and GNAT have now saw reason to do the right thing by calling for this long over-due strike. What I always don't understand is our choice of timing. Look, no one can deny the fact that we need to go on strike at a time when it will be effective, and that the time for students' final preparation to write their final examination, is one of the best opportune times. Yet what I don't support is making the Innocent suffer for the sin of others. Are the parents of these students the ones who are insensitive to our feelings and suffering? Yet, who is going to suffer at the end, looking for money to pay or register their wards should they fail or who is the one going through the stress of not being sure of the future of their wards in the upcoming examination as a result of our strike action at this time? Is it the parent or the Government? Who is going to have the task of learning and preparing to write a private examination, that is, provided they have the money to register? Students or government? So you see what i mean by the Innocents?

I SYMPATHIZED WITH YOUR PLIGHT AS TEACHERS WITH YOUR CURRENT LIVING CONDITIONS, DESPITE THE FACT THAT YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE WELFARE OF THE COUNTRY IS EQUALLY AS IMPORTANT AS THE MINISTERS ETC. YOU DESERVE SOME TOKENS.
TO THE GOVERNMENT:
THE EDUCATION SYSTEM NEEDS RESTRUCTURING ESPECIALLY AT THE TEACHING DEPARTMENT. THERE ARE LOTS OF TEACHERS OPERATING BELOW EXPECTATION. A STANDARD MUST BE SET FOR A TEACHER TO ATTAIN BEFORE ENTERING THE CLASSROOM AS A TEACHER. ANYONE GOES TO THE TRAINING COLLEGE AND ENTERS THE CLASSROOM TO TEACH. THE TEACHER POPULATION COMPARED TO THEIR PERFORMANCE OUTPUT IS NOT SATISFACTORY. THOSE TEACHERS NOT PERFORMING SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPTION TO UPGRADE OR SHOWN THE EXIT. WHEN THERE ARE FEWER SERIOUSLY PERFORMING TEACHERS, BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE. TODAY THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT BEEN ABLE TO MEET THE DEMAND OF ALL THE TEACHERS [THOSE PERFORMING AND THOSE NOT]. IN THE USA HERE, GOING TO TEACH IS NOT JUST FOR ANY DROP OUT IN LIFE. IT IS A PLACE OF COMPETITIVE PERFORMANCE WHICH GOES WITH GOOD TAKE HOME PAY. TEACHING HERE [USA] IS NOT A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE GO TO UNDER PERFORM AND EXPECT TO BE PAID. NOWAY. SO GHANA GOVERNMENT, GET THE UNDER PERFORMING TEACHERS OUT OF THE CLASSROOM, OR MAKE TEACHING VERY COMPETITIVE AND MAINTAIN THOSE ABOVE STANDARD WITH GOOD INCENTIVES.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE BELOW STANDARD? THEY CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS TEACHER ASSISTANTS AND ALSO GROUPED UNDER A DIFFERENT TEACHER ASSISTANT CATEGORY. THEY DONT TEACH BUT ASSIST THE TEACHER WITH OTHER EXTRA CURRICULUM ACTIVITIES.ETC. LET THE GOVERNMENT VISIT THE AMERICAN SCHOOL[ LINCOLN SCHOOL] AT DZORWULU TO SEE HOW THINGS ARE GOING ON THERE. TEACHERS DONT COME TO SCHOOL LATE OR RESPOND TO WORK ANY HOW, AS IS DONE IN THE GES AND IN MOST INSTITUTIONS. TEACHERS ARE BEEN PAID TO PERFORM NOT TO BE THERE TO OCCUPY SPACE, COME TO SCHOOL AT ANYTIME, LEAVE AT ANYTIME, SITTING DOWN ALL DAY WITH NO SERIOUS TEACHING. AND THE GOVERNMENT KEPT ON PAYING SALARIES THAT GOES TO SOME TEACHERS WHO ARE NOT PERFORMING AT ALL. THESE ARE SOME OF THE BAD NUTS STUCK IN THE TUBE THAT NEEDED TO BE CLEARED. TEACHING MUST BE OF A STANDARD AND VERY COMPETITIVE AND MUST GO WITH PERFORMANCE TO EARN BETTER TAKE HOME PAY.

Why didnt they called for this strike in January, were they waiting for WASSE before striking, did we appoint them just to make us tools for their inability to neogotiate ?
