The Chinese have hundreds of thousands of their citizens studying english in the West. Ghana is lucky to have a language that has become the world's lingua -franca.You are still going to turn out mediocre students in Twi,Fanti,Ga and Gonjo if the learning institution does not have the right resources, and that includes the teacher as well as the student.Introducing local languages as a tool of improving stands is just delusion, not the mastersroke. The real answer for better education outcomes will occur with better trained, better paid teachers and classrooms with resources that meets the minimum standards in countries such as, Singapore, south Korea of Finland. Now,we are talking!

Again and Again and Again, I say you Akans are the problem. Each time some of you backward traditionalists claim we should use our local languages, you simply mean TWI. Many of you pretenders have gone to great lengths never to learn any other Ghanaian language except TWI, yet you pretend we as collective Ghanaians have a language to educate and progress in.
The trouble with most Akans is that they can't speak good English hence their attitude in downplaying it's significance. Why compare us Ghanaians to the Chinese. Do you have any idea how many Chinese, Russians and other Europeans speak English proudly (or shall I say study it intensely). Please shut the hell up about local languages and education. We all can speak our mother tongues conveniently, but none can ever replace the English language. What else did the colonizers stigmatize us with, that you freaking traditionalist are forgetting to let go off of? Every day a poor nation like Ghana, people are so preoccupied with TWI this and TWI that. Since when did Twi even become significant? That was when all the abject poor and rural folks converged onto the capital Accra, and refused to speak the local regional language. What else can one do, should they kill them all, like mosquitoes and housefly invasions? Maybe we should use the housefly buzz or mosquito buss, because it is the most commonly spoken language in Accra as far as I am concerned, not Twi.
You can speak your Twi however much you wish, but it won't get you anywhere. Matter of fact excessive Twi being injected and forced into our old system is what has corrupted and downgraded our intellectualism , integrity, personality and glory, and many other aspects of civility.
Away!!!

Chinese government have put learning of English as their first priority for international supremacy. What language do the students take their exams? The Diploma holders mentioned in this article are all products of the University of Cape Coast. You can now see why even though Ghana is endowed with a lot of resources we are still under-developed. Ever since Ghana started promoting and imposing university education on us what have we achieved? We always take delight in suppressing other qualifications in favour of the university degree. We have not seen anything yet. The worse is yet to come if we don't change our stupid mentality.

In Arkansas in the US under Bill Clinton as governor, he found a similar situation and the State was 46th on the Education league table in the US. So what did he do? provide incentives for teachers to retrain to improve their own standards of knowledge and competence whilst improving their conditions of service. He made a deal with the Teacher Unions. The bottom line was, those who refused to step up and / or were still under-performing were gently moved aside and within a short time, the State was competing at a higher level in education nationally. Unless, and until you have a properly trained and skilled education workforce, all sectors of the economy will suffer.
For Ghana to attain and maintain a genuine middle-income status, we need a sea change in attitudes, mindsets and actual practice especially in education, training and research. A lot of the teaching material for the primary and secondary sector are good, but we need a well trained and dedicated teaching profession to deliver to the highest standards. Pupils have got to learn the drill of how to learn properly and English language is fundamental to the proper understanding of science and math. The government and ministry of education and GES have a responsibility to work with the Teacher Unions to make this happen. I also expect a responsible opposition to make their own contribution at constituency level to raise local standards (whether they agree with the government or not). This is rather urgent and requires immediate attention.

Our useless university graduates are educated but not trained. Education is easy, cheap and ineffective yet Ghanaians always want this short cut to the top. Training on the other hand is very effective in accomplishing any task. That is why we are not developed.

The fact is the entire state institutions in the country are horribly collapsing including our once enviable education system. Ghana is producing illiterate unmarketable graduates walking hopelessly jobless on our streets and we need a radical approach for corrections now.
What we seriously have to reconsider is to go back to the old system, give back the schools to the former institutions that run them with professional care and compassion. Period!
We must also make sure that, the state take good care to provide our teachers with quality training programmes, incentives like housing, excellent teaching materials with attractive salaries and stop the despicable dubious settlement debt payments to enrich political associate criminals.

OUR TEACHERS CAN’T TEACH ENGLISH? What a pity, what has become of our proud educational institutes? The UCC was established with teaching as its core criteria, it was the cradle of our educational system, where professionalism was the norm. Is that what it is today? We had teacher training colleges, what has become of them?
I remember when I was a kid in primary and middle school, it was fun when trainee teachers came to practice, it was just fun, they made learning fun. They were eager to impart what they had leant and there was enthusiasm which made us all want to learn. There was also the fact that for period that the trainees were with us the canes were absent. You could see that the trainees were motivated, what it was that motivated them then I did not know then and don’t even now. I know that they were paid an allowance and I believe that they had the tools and equipment needed to learn and practice. They would help with extra tuition after school and we would visit they at their colleges with gifts (provisions and in some cases cooked food) from parents.
You visit the training colleges today and you see decay and despair, and I ask myself what has become of our quest for quality education?
Until the sitting government wakes up to the fact that it takes education to develop a nation and continues to give lip service to our educational system we will continue to churn out illiterate teachers who do not know why they are in the classroom. As BA said our teachers should be taught to teach, and they should be motivated. Teachers should be seen as the foundation even the bedrock of a nations development and as such the sitting government should and as a matter of urgency isolate the Ministry of Education and critically scrutinize the sector and infuse it with vision and technology as befits the 21st century Ghana.
And as the PPP continues to say, it must be FREE, CONTINOUS AND COMPULSORY, with emphasis on agric, science, technology and sports. Not forgetting literacy and numeracy. Education can be fun if the teacher is fun, children like to play the reason why it should be fun, as long as it fun to learn the children will want to have some more fun, and it becomes a habit and once it becomes a habit, it becomes a circle that keeps going and going.
The PPP will make teaching and learning fun, by providing the tools, equipment and the environment for the teacher to learn to teach. Below is the PPP’s Agenda on Education.
Provide Quality Education For Every Ghanaian Child. Standardize schools facilities from kindergarten to Senior High School with libraries, toilets, classrooms, kitchen, housing teachers, playground, etc: and Ensure free and compulsory education in public schools from kindergarten to Senior High School (including computer training). We will deploy an “Education Police” to enforce the compulsory aspect of our policy. An integral part of this objective will be an objective to significantly increase vocational training so that all school leavers gain employable skills. This will include a comprehensive sports program to instill discipline and promote better health.
Long Live Ghana, Long Live the PROGRESSIVE PEOPLES PARTY. Awake for Ghana.

Mr Ansah has made a very critical analysis of the current tends of teacher education in Ghana. my only worry is why should we always use English, Maths and Science as the only yardstick in the measurement of the success of Education in Ghana?
Another question we should ask is; How many of those newly trained Diploma holders can even read and write thir own Ghanaian language, let alone teach it. How many of them can teach a drop of Ghana's history (Education)? It is only when we know we are coming from, then we can predict where we are going. How much moral education have they to even be committed to do what they are being paid for? Excuse me to say that many of our teachers today are like our "black star players", they only want the remuneration and the service to be rendered, thus payment for no work done. It is only God that can save Ghana.

When I read Mahama's spoken English, that is his words in inverted commas when he visited the Bui Dam facility recently, I could hardly make any sense of his English. If even our so-called President cannot speak proper English without referring to a written statement how can we expect him to be competent enough to be a leader in this 21 first century.
The benefit of mastering good English is crucial to one's understanding of the world around him and one's capability to actively get involved in events as well as initiating them.
Even in England, the birth place of the English language, their education system places a highest regard for a highest level of English language competence achievement by a student because, as they rightly say, whether one likes it or not English is the modern day's international language and as such the key to all aspect of civilization in terms of medical science, engineering, business, politics, economics, literature, physics, the list goes on and on.
Our ministers speak English by thinking in their mother tongue, but the language must be spoken just as it is spoken academically for it to achieve its objectives.

This issue has generated interesting arguments. Many points have been raised to support individuals' viewpoints. However, it seems to me that, most of the conclusions are aberrant with the premise of the speech. The main premise is, holders of diplomas in various subjects, including English, cannot handle their majors well enough, or teach those disciplines well enough. Therefore, education in Ghana has been down graded. I know, for a fact that, a Ghanaian who is in the US, professes to being a graduate in English, but is struggling to cope up with English Composition 1, in a Community College English course. Besides, his poor accent, his grammar is horrible. Some of us hardly believe in the validity of his diploma. "Ei Legon paa nie?"

There are several reasons for this problem with the English language. The language is introduced too late (after age 5 years). Secondly it is taught by teachers who first think in the venacular and translate their thoughts into English. Examples: "Iam going to come" and "You are lying" These should have been "I'll be back shortly' and 'This can't be true". Thirdly parents, typically with very poor command of the language themselves, use it as a medium of expression at home, leading to a liguistic disaster for the children. There are perhaps thousands if not millions of such children that are not good in any language.
I have no solutions. Let the experts lead all of us
