Perhaps one event in the history of Ghana that has attracted the most scholarly attention, but which paradoxically only punctuates the existing literature is the so-called 1948 “riots. Africans in the Gold Coast defined their local grievances as functions of colonial rule and saw political change as pre-condition for material improvement. Hence, the use of the term “riot,” a colonial construct, tends to obscure, rather than illuminate the context, goals, and motivations of the participants.
