So far your comment is the most sensible. All the comments before yours are thrash . We have idiots and crack heads plying our roads as drivers. When i was driving from Accra to Kumasi last year, I had to virtually swerve off the road about four times to avoid head on collision with oncoming vehicles. They just do over taking " by heart " and some drivers deserve to die on the road. No matter the conditions of the road ,there is no reason to drive recklessly. Roads do not cause accidents . It is the irresponsible driving that causes accidents.

A doctor and a lawyer got into a car accident, on a small country road. The lawyer had figured that nobody else would be on the road, and had raced through a stop sign. The doctor, on a cross street, had no time to react and couldn't have missed the lawyer if he had tried. Fortunately, neither driver was hurt.
The lawyer, seeing that the doctor was a little shaken up, helped him from his battered car and offered him a Akperteshie drink from a hip flask. The doctor accepted, took a deep drink, and handed the flask back to the lawyer. The lawyer held the flask for a minute or two, and gave it to the doctor again. The doctor took another swig. He again returned the flask to the lawyer, who closed it and put it away.
"Aren't you going to have a drink yourself?" asked the doctor.
"Not now," answered the lawyer. "I'll have something after the police leave."

The roads are not doing the killing rather than the way people drive, with utter disregard for driving etiquette.
One automatically switches into over-vigilance whenever driving conditions are not overly appropriate. That is the self-enforcing rule any motorists puts into effect. The George Bush M1 is supposedly a very modern highway but what is extent of mortality on it since construction?.
I have been driving for the past 20 years without a ticket except for expired meters and I pride myself in my driving skills and could travel over a thousand kilometers at a time without a whimper except to refuel when necessary. However my experience once home for my father's funeral told me I will never survive driving in the streets and roads of Ghana. For it would appear every motorist thinks he has the right of the way and so must proceed when he feels like and damn the other motorists.
One day, I was in the passenger seat on a trip between Madina and Accra central, and you cannot believe how petrified I was as we were nearly involved in two accidents,in a short space of time, the first at the Tetteh Quarshie Circle when a motorist nearly rammed into our car after overtaking all other cars ahead of his and trying force into the space in front us. He did not even offer an apology but looked unconcerned as if it should be an every day occurrence.
And not during my stay did I see a highway patrol car or or a policeman on motorbike on traffic related duties.
The attitude of pedestrians is also bewildering. Recently, I read an interview on Ghanaweb involving a cell phone dealer pertaining to the pedestrian deaths on the George Bush Highway and he was so into himself to pronounce that, he cannot walk the distance to the footbridges but will cross the highway notwithstanding the risks and you ask yourself, are these people serious. Is saving ten minutes worth losing your life for.?
Until there is complete paradigm shift on the part of motorists and pedestrians, even constructing ultra modern roads will not solve the accident problems. Instead, it will give the road users the licence to more reckless behavior on the roads.

This type of killing by the passenger drivers should cease. it is about time the business of public transportation was taken over by the government and drivers given a thorough assessment before they drive passengers. I recently drove from Takoradi to Accra and had one of these Benz passenger busses overtake about ten vehicles including mine just before Mankesim. The drive was so reckless and I said he was going to kill these people by the way he was driving. Lo and behold, I saw the bus just before Kasoa had skidded off the road, turned over and dead bodies being collected and saw a lifeless baby which broke my heart. When are we going to take action to stop such recklessness as a nation on our roads. THIS IS THE TIME!!! Please Mahama make me the MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND I WILL ENSURE THAT THIS COMES TO AN END!!

So long as Ghana relies on brainless drivers to ferry passengers around, tragedies like this will continue to happen. Because of greed, these nonentities called drivers will also continue to murder passengers and get away with their crimes. If that driver was competent and also not greedy, he would not have attempted to overtake another vehicle when it was not safe to do so.
Our roads are dangerously narrow and it is important for all road users to know that speeding always kills. They should also be sensible to know that it is always better to be late getting to a destination rather than murdering passenger along the way because of reckless driving.
Murderous drivers, if they survive should face murder charges. This carnage on our roads should not be tolerated. No matter how many passengers are slaughtered on our roads by our stupid drivers, because no deterrent action is taken against them, the carnage will not be history. I suggest that muderous drivers should be prosecuted as murderers.
My heart bleeds for the lives that have been extinguished and my heartfelt condolences go to their loved ones. It's frightening to travel on our roads when there are dangerously incompetent drivers about. Can't the government see the urgency that this state of affairs warrants and take the necessary action to stop the slaughter?
I'm inclined to believe that we have a transport Minister and a parliament who can introduce strict measures against reckless and dangerous drivers and thereby make our roads safer. Dangerous drivers are as homicidal as any other murderers.

Isn't it time when passengers should exercise their rights as paying passengers to tell a speeding driver to slow down? The majority of passengers are of the mindset of the speeding driver because they want to get to their destination sooner.
The lone passenger who pleads with a speeding driver will often be attacked by fellow passengers. The vehicle may be a bone-shaker death-trap for a start and speeding makes matters worse. What's all the apwwding about, anyway? Isn't it motivated by greed?
If we can't have safer dual-carriage or wider roads, then common sense demands that we stop the reckless speeding. We can start by re-tesing our drivers and ensuring that the incompetent ones are off our roads. Corrupt traffic police and road transport officials are partly to blame for the carnage as are the courts that let off murderous drivers with merely a slap on the wrist.
Passenger must speak up when their driver is being reckless because after all he is human. Some passengers sit like sheep to slaughter until the inevitable happens. The government must take drastic action.

THIS YOUNG DRIVER WANTED TO IMPRESS UPON THIS WOMAN HOW GOOD A DRIVER HE WAS. HE PUT THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON WHEN THERE WERE ACTUALLY NO HAZARDS AND STARTED OVER SPEEDING BLOWING THE HORN UNNECESSARILY AMID AROUND 8PM ON A DESERTED ROAD. I HAD TRAVELED FROM THE UK TO VISIT MY SICK MOTHER. I WAS JUST FIRM TO EXPLAIN TO THE GENTLEMAN THE IMPORTANCE OF ROAD SAFETY. HE TOOK MY ADVICE ON BOARD AND WE REACHED SAFELY. ALL THE OTHER PASSENGERS WERE JUST QUIET. I STRONGLY AGREE WITH YOU. PASSENGERS SHOULD STAND FOR THEIR RIGHTS.
