China defends Ghana in illegal arms saga

China has jumped to the defence of Ghana in an arms deal in which an illegal British broker has been convicted for supplying fighter jets to the Ghanaian army without license six years ago.

The deal had been under investigation by the UK customs authority since 2007.

The British Court found that the arms dealer Christopher McDowell was engaged in an illegal deal and sentenced him to a-two-year jail term.

Joy News first broke the news and has since cited official statement from the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation clarifying Ghana’s involvement in the deal.

The Chinese company claims Chris MacDowell is their agent in West Africa and only introduced Ghana to them.

The statement said after the introduction, the Chinese company dealt directly with government of Ghana.

The statement further stated that the Ghana government negotiated the lowest price the company has ever sold Fighter jets to any country.

Whilst the statement may have exonerated the government of Ghana from any wrong doing, the Head of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre, Dr. Kwesi Aning who has written extensively about Ghana’s military arms deals said Ghana needed to have done a lot better.

He told Joy News the parties- the Chinese company and the government of Ghana- ought to have checked the background of the individual they were dealing with.

He said the Parliament of Ghana ought to have done a lot of due diligence before going ahead of the deal.

He said the nation must bring in a net work of individuals and professionals with an understanding and expertise on how some of these international transactions are done.

The Executive Secretary of the local chapter of the Transparency International, Vitus Azeem said it was enough that Ghana had a good deal in the end.

“The fact that you got the lowest price does not mean you got the highest quality,” he stated.

He didn't dupe Ghana, by supplying out-moded or over-aged aircrafts as was the case during P-NDC's regime. They succeeded into acqiring an old Gulf Stream Presidential Jet, for Ghana with higly inflated price, borne by unsuspecting Ghanaian tax-payer.

This is no big news! The NDC, finding the going shaky for them, at the Supreme Court, would want to divert public attention, by posting such ugly news.

Perhaps the Mr. McDowell is guilty of crafty theft schemes in the sale of military hardware to Ghana, just as the NDC and the EC have been caught in election fraud. Whichever these stories point to, one thing is certain; that our dear country is fast building structures to curb corruption and election fraud.

It appears this particular 'real' transaction has completely eluded Maame Brookman Amissah and her so-called "organisation against corruption UK". Is it because it involves the Kufuor government? Surely this matter in which a party to the transaction has been convicted IN THE UK where she lives; and that there is no denying that the said aircraft were really purchased and indeed are currently in use in Ghana should have made she and her fraternity to 'smell a rat'?

Why have they fallen so palpably silent? This is more than hypocrisy and double standards. Yet she is able to compose a 'concoction' to mislead Ghanaians that somehow the president Mahama visited London to meet with Tsatsu Tsikata and others to "manufacture" an electoral list to support their case at the SC. How very odd?

Whichever way you look at it, the Ghanaian authorities need to investigate what has happened in this case and it may well be that the transaction itself was OK but why would our government do business with (or through) a person of questionable character?

If people make it their business to tie the president with the gay activist Solomon and to make such brouhaha out of it when no crime has been committed; and if the same people will attempt to discredit the government and president in the matter of "gold seizure" in Turkey, then why are they so silent on this one? As I have always said, be careful with your utterances. If we all stick to the truth and facts, our nation will be the much better off!

If Ghana wants to buy planes from China, why the hell does it need to go to some shady British middleman? The Chinese government constructed and donated the new Ghana Armed Forces buildings in Accra. So can anybody claim that we don't have direct contacts with China when we wish to buy military airplanes?

Mubarak of Egypt built his multi-billion dollar loot from exactly the same method. In fact, as Defense Minister he acted as the contractor supplying the Egyptian government with weapons, and took a whopping commission for his "services"!

A private car is not sold if not licensed. Just leave Dr. Addo-Kufour alone and know that he can be a business man as a Ghanaian not because his brother happened to be the President.
