We used to hear people say that Africans love life so much and could not involve themselves in suicide bombing. But the Nigerian Boko Haram has proven that to be wrong. When cowards like Pratt think that we have nothing to do with what is happening in Mali, he should think again. Al-Qaeda doesn't know boundaries. They are transferring from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen to the Sahara Desert where you have weaker government. Al-Qaeda already has bases in Libya for training Jihads.

I see where Kwesi Pratt is coming from. The west can not support and defend their own through NATO when it comes to their strategic interest and then ask us to sacrifice our lives in defence of those interests. The AU pleaded with Nato when france and uk attacked libya just for their oil using flimsy excuses. They were warned that if they overthrow Gadafi there is the possibility of destabilizing the region they refused. To day what is happening in Mali is a fall out their conquest. At the first of their war against libya when asked why Africa was not represented they said they don't mind whether we are represented or not.Now they want us to help them fight against militant Islam because it is in their interest to do so.When can we act independently in the name of Africa and only in Africa's interest.

Yes you have a point about France and Britain attacking Libya. What you have overlooked is the fact that if the Libyans themselves had not taken arms against Gaddafi France and Britain would not have intervened. The Governments of the developed world intervened when Gaddafi had vowed to slaughter innocent citizens in and around Benghazzi who wanted a seccession from Libya. It was therefore more in the interest of Libyans than the interests of France and Britain.
In Mali, when the Tuaregs who are demanding independence from South of Mali, seized the northern part, there was no move from France. It was only when they began military campaigns to the south of Mali with the intention of eventually conquering the whole of Mali that France acted to stop them. If you have been following the news, the Malians were the happiest people when France intervened. Already the imposed Sharia Law was taking a toll on them. Initially the Malians said they would resist any African forces coming into Mali. Now they are happy the sub region is going to assist. Yes it is not only in the interest of France that they intervened. It is in the interest of all of us. I for one was fearing that after taking on Mali, as their movement is Jihad for West Africa, they would eventually come to Burkina Faso and to Ghana. And please never say it would not happen in Ghana.

The eastern region of libya with its capital Benghazi was a hot bed of militant islam who had being in opposition to Gadafi for a long time. When the west armed them to rise against gadafi it was only a ploy for them to implement their agenda of having access to libyan oil.Using the uprising in the east as an excuse, they quickly step in to ensure the overthrow of Gadafi ignoring advice that it will not be in the interest of the west and the region. The AU wanted to be given the opportunity to resolve the libyan crisis but the west refused.Infact Africa as a continent was snubbed by the west.My argument is not against stopping the jihad-is but that this militants are a direct fall out of the Libyan invasion and a problem created by the west. The so called Arab spring is now biting back and would potentially plunge the region in turmoil which will affect the geo strategic interest of france and therefore the west.
Africa must must identify its interest and organize itself to solve problems concerning Africa but not to allow the problems to be imposed on us by western interest.

Interesting analysis. At the base of all the conflicting strategic interests of Europeans and Africans alike, is the question of how to ensure that Rule of Law continues to evolve and become entrenched around the globe. With this in mind, it is in the interest of Africans to join forces with the rest of the world to root out outlaws and fanatics who choose to impose their will on the free people of this world. For me, when you take off the cloak called "Tuaregs; Al Qaieda; coup plotters etc", you will end up with the same entity that plagues peace loving people. That entity is any person or persons who work against the rule of law. Such entities work against freedom and justice. The world must deal with these entities in order to minimize chaos and promote peace. That is a good reason why Ghana should join those who seek stability in Mali and West Africa.

MALI WILL BE THE LAST AFRICAN COUNTRY TO CONTRIBUTE TROOPS TO GHANA IF GHANA WERE IN THAT SITUATION, AND THE HISTORICAL FACTS ARE THERE FOR ALL TO PLAYBACK.
IT'S ABOUT TIME GHANA'S "LEADERS" QUICKLY LEARNED THE COMMONSENSE RULES OF DIPLOMATIC RECIPROCITY.
IT DOESN'T TAKE A PHD IN ROCKET SCIENCE TO ACQUIRE THAT COMMONSENSE KNOWLEDGE OR RECIPROCITY.
ALMOST ALL THE NORTH AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND THOSE IN THE SAHEL REGION OF AFRICA IDENTIFY WITH AFRICA ONLY WHEN IT SUITS THEM. THOSE COUNTRIES ARE MORE ALIGNED TO THE GULF COUNTRIES AND "THE WEST" FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.
PERHAPS, GHANA'S BRAINLESS "LEADERS" SHOULD START CONSIDERING "LEADING BY EXAMPLE" BY CONSCRIPTING MEMBERS OF THEIR IMMEDIATE FAMILIES TO SUCH INTERNATIONAL "PEACE-KEEPING" WAR ZONES.
THEY'LL LIVE TO TELL THE TALE IF ANY OF THEIR CONSCRIPTED FAMILY MEMBERS GETS KILLED OR MAIMED FOR LIFE.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ARGENTINIAN WAR SHIP, AND WHAT WAS GHANA'S GAIN FOR SENSELESSLY DETAINING THAT WAR SHIP AT THE LOSS OF TEMA PORT'S REVENUE FOR THE PERIOD OF DETENTION?
THAT STUPID ACT COULD HAVE CAUSED GHANA A LOT OF AVOIDABLE NONESENSE HAD THE ARGENTINIAN GOVERNMENT REACTED.
DON'T BEHAVE LIKE A SCUMBAG WHO DOES NOT APPRECIATE THE THE HISTORICAL FACTS "ON THE GROUND" TO KNOW HOW USELESS GHANA'S LEADERS HAVE BEEN.
HOW MUCH SHARE DOES GHANA GOVERNMENT GET FROM THE NATION'S OFF-SHORE CRUDE OIL? 10%. FUNNY!! ISN'T IT?
DOES GHANA REFINE IT'S DERISORY 10% SHARE OF CRUDE OIL WHEN WE HAVE NKRUMAH'S TEMA OIL REFINERY CRYING OUT FOR RETRO-FIT AND EXPANSION? NONE.
I'LL NOT GO TOO FAR. JUST COMPARE DR. NKRUMAH'S PERFORMANCE TO THAT OF OTHER GHANA LEADERS, AND YOU'LL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NKRUMAH AND OTHER GHANA LEADERS.
NO WONDER THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY IS AT THE MERCY OF THE LIKES OF WOYOME AND OTHER "CONSULTANTS/CONTRACTORS", FOREIGN AND LOCAL.

Am sure he has not done any research on this Islamists groups operating in Mali else he would have known that we don't necessarily have to send troops to Mali before they attack us. They would do that anyway becos their agenda is the agenda of Al Qaida; to take over the whole world and turn it into a Caliphate and these groupings are the ones to do that job in the Sub Sahelian region, including Ghana. If K Pratt knows military strategy then he will have known that the best way to defend is to attack. Prevention is always better than sure. A man goes to a Psychologist and says, "Doc I got a real problem, I can't stop thinking about sex."
The Psychologist says, "Well let's see what we can find out", and pulls out his ink blots. "What is this a picture of?" he asks.
The man turns the picture upside down then turns it around and states, "That's a man and a woman on a bed making love."
The Psychologist says, "very interesting," and shows the next picture. "And what is this a picture of?"
The man looks and turns it in different directions and says, "That's a man and a woman on a bed making love."
The Psychologists tries again with the third ink blot, and asks the same question, "What is this a picture of?"

I believe all frican states are independent and soverein?? It took a long time for the UN to grant Africa's request to interven in Mali after, which it was estimated that African soldiers would be ready for the task in September. Suddenly, without UN approval, France gets itself invited by Mali to precipitate action under the umbrage of the approval given to Africa. Now African soldiers are expected to follow the French time schedule like lackeys. As Kwesi rightly asks, are Ghanaian soldiers as ready as the French soldiers to fight a desert war at this time? Is Ghana prepared to face retaliation by radical Islamists on our oilfeilds, and drag it into the war against terrorism which, being an abstract concept, can continue till kingdom come, on an agenda that may now not necesarily be set by Africa/Ghana?
When the Osagyefo, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, suggested the setting up of the Africa High Command for addressing such exigencies with Africa's interest as the guiding principle, the idea was scoffed at by the West. The West broke the pandora's box in Lybia. The punishments are manifesting in Mali and the Tuareg region. They must contain the dangerous contents the have let loose.Remember that Algeria is now in trouble just for allowing French forces to use its airspace en route to Mali!

Come on, Komla, don't be stupid! Could Mali have waited till September when African troops are supposed to be ready when already two of their cities including Diabally had fallen into the hands of these Islamists Jihadists and they were moving towards the capital Bamako. You will be a dreamer to wish for the best under these circumstances without a timely help like such as the French is giving. Circumstances that prevailed in Nkrumah's time (the cold war era) is no more with us but we are facing an era of Jihadism. Be real and know that Ghana can't behave like the proverbial ostrich, thinking this problem can't catch up with us. We need to lend a hand to nip it in the bud before it catches up with us. Thumbs up Ghana Army and High Morale!!!

What they are doing is criminal and primitive, but we should let the professional "Al Qaeda busters" to do the job, instead of sending our sojas as bullet stoppers.

The old adage says " when the moustache is burning, the eyebrow must be worried". We are forgetting so soon how "a special group of Ghanaians" NOT REBELS, wish to vosit mayhem on the country for being losers in a common political game called elections? Who would have helped us if its always "di wofie asem?". The Ghana Army will never be prepared if they ever remain the glorified peacekeepers they are renounced to be. The Ghana security forces are the psycholigical, moral and professional reflection of what Ghanaians are. If anyone thinks they are not prepared to execute combat tasks, I am afraid Ghanaians as well as their perceived defenders will run at the first gunshot. Thats who we simply are-cowards!!

The Geopolitical Reordering of Africa: US Covert Support to Al Qaeda in Northern Mali, France “Comes to the Rescue”
NATO funding, arming, while simultaneously fighting Al Qaeda from Mali to Syria
By Tony Cartalucci. (Globalresearch)
A deluge of articles have been quickly put into circulation defending France’s military intervention in the African nation of Mali. TIME’s article, “The Crisis in Mali: Will French Intervention Stop the Islamist Advance?” decides that old tricks are the best tricks, and elects the tiresome “War on Terror” narrative.TIME claims the intervention seeks to stop “Islamist” terrorists from overrunning both Africa and all of Europe. Specifically, the article states:
“…there is a (probably well-founded) fear in France that a radical Islamist Mali threatens France most of all, since most of the Islamists are French speakers and many have relatives in France. (Intelligence sources in Paris have told TIME that they’ve identified aspiring jihadis leaving France for northern Mali to train and fight.) Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), one of the three groups that make up the Malian Islamist alliance and which provides much of the leadership, has also designated France — the representative of Western power in the region — as a prime target for attack.”
What TIME elects not to tell readers is that Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is closely allied to the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG whom France intervened on behalf of during NATO’s 2011 proxy-invasion of Libya – providing weapons, training, special forces and even aircraft to support them in the overthrow of Libya’s government.
As far back as August of 2011, Bruce Riedel out of the corporate-financier funded think-tank, the Brookings Institution, wrote “Algeria will be next to fall,” where he gleefully predicted success in Libya would embolden radical elements in Algeria, in particular AQIM. Between extremist violence and the prospect of French airstrikes, Riedel hoped to see the fall of the Algerian government. Ironically Riedel noted:
Algeria has expressed particular concern that the unrest in Libya could lead to the development of a major safe haven and sanctuary for al-Qaeda and other extremist jihadis.
And thanks to NATO, that is exactly what Libya has become – a Western sponsored sanctuary for Al-Qaeda. AQIM’s headway in northern Mali and now French involvement will see the conflict inevitably spill over into Algeria. It should be noted that Riedel is a co-author of “Which Path to Persia?” which openly conspires to arm yet another US State Department-listed terrorist organization (list as #28), the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) to wreak havoc across Iran and help collapse the government there – illustrating a pattern of using clearly terroristic organizations, even those listed as so by the US State Department, to carry out US foreign policy.Geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar noted a more direct connection between LIFG and AQIM in an Asia Times piece titled, “How al-Qaeda got to rule in Tripoli:”
“Crucially, still in 2007, then al-Qaeda’s number two, Zawahiri, officially announced the merger between the LIFG and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb (AQIM). So, for all practical purposes, since then, LIFG/AQIM have been one and the same – and Belhaj was/is its emir. “
“Belhaj,” referring to Hakim Abdul Belhaj, leader of LIFG in Libya, led with NATO support, arms, funding, and diplomatic recognition, the overthrowing of Muammar Qaddafi and has now plunged the nation into unending racist and tribal, genocidal infighting. This intervention has also seen the rebellion’s epicenter of Benghazi peeling off from Tripoli as a semi-autonomous “Terror-Emirate.” Belhaj’s latest campaign has shifted to Syria where he was admittedly on the Turkish-Syrian border pledging weapons, money, and fighters to the so-called “Free Syrian Army,” again, under the auspices of NATO support.
Image: NATO’s intervention in Libya has resurrected listed-terrorist organization and Al Qaeda affiliate, LIFG. It had previously fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now has fighters, cash and weapons, all courtesy of NATO, spreading as far west as Mali, and as far east as Syria. The feared “global Caliphate” Neo-Cons have been scaring Western children with for a decade is now taking shape via US-Saudi, Israeli, and Qatari machinations, not “Islam.” In fact, real Muslims have paid the highest price in fighting this real “war against Western-funded terrorism.”
LIFG, which with French arms, cash, and diplomatic support, is now invading northern Syria on behalf of NATO’s attempted regime change there, officially merged with Al Qaeda in 2007 according to the US Army’s West Point Combating Terrorism Center (CTC). According to the CTC, AQIM and LIFG share not only ideological goals, but strategic and even tactical objectives. The weapons LIFG received most certainly made their way into the hands of AQIM on their way through the porous borders of the Sahara Desert and into northern Mali.
In fact, ABC News reported in their article, “Al Qaeda Terror Group: We ‘Benefit From’ Libyan Weapons,” that:
A leading member of an al Qaeda-affiliated terror group indicated the organization may have acquired some of the thousands of powerful weapons that went missing in the chaos of the Libyan uprising, stoking long-held fears of Western officials.”We have been one of the main beneficiaries of the revolutions in the Arab world,” Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a leader of the north Africa-based al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb [AQIM], told the Mauritanian news agency ANI Wednesday. “As for our benefiting from the [Libyan] weapons, this is a natural thing in these kinds of circumstances.”
It is no coincidence that as the Libyan conflict was drawing to a conclusion, conflict erupted in northern Mali. It is part of a premeditated geopolitical reordering that began with toppling Libya, and since then, using it as a springboard for invading other targeted nations, including Mali, Algeria, and Syria with heavily armed, NATO-funded and aided terrorists.
French involvement may drive AQIM and its affiliates out of northern Mali, but they are almost sure to end up in Algeria, most likely by design.
Algeria was able to balk subversion during the early phases of the US-engineered “Arab Spring” in 2011, but it surely has not escaped the attention of the West who is in the midst of transforming a region stretching from Africa to Beijing and Moscow’s doorsteps – and in a fit of geopolitical schizophrenia – using terrorists both as a casus belli to invade and as an inexhaustible mercenary force to do it...

If your neighbour's beard is burning and it does not bother you, the fire will soon catch and burn your house down. The enemy is not the Tuaregs and radical Jihadists. The enemy is anybody and any group of persons who defy rule of law, and are hell bent on destabilizing the West African sub-region. Ghana must join forces with those who value Rule of law and peace, to go on the offensive (not defense)against these terrible foes on the rampage in Mali. Deeds, not just words matter here. The only thing necessary for evil to have its way, is when good men and women sit and do nothing. Think big Mr. Pratt. The world is playing offense against nation wreckers. Ghana is on the right side of history by stepping forth into Mali.

When the foolish man, Atta Mills increased the army's salaries for no reason and for doing nothing, the soldiers applauded the gesture. Now the time has come for them to justify the raise they received. This raise was not based on any cost of living variance but to buy their loyalty in the form of a bribe. This same foolish man was going to build houses for the so called security forces when millions of Ghanaians are starving, uneducated and unemployed. That was all he came to do and I have no choice but to hate Atta Mills till I die for ignoring the rest of the country. Doctors, nurses and even teachers had to go on strike before they got something, though side by side they provide more values to the nation than these forces. Despite the raise the police still take bribes and there is no equality within the ranks of the army and the police. Send them to harms way to teach them a lesson for going along with the program of silence.Today if you want a better life the army or the police force or customs is the place to go when teachers are ignored. To think that any Ghanaian soldier will be killed anywhere wiyhout a fight is wishful thinking. Only feet) (Ga word for coward)would think this way. Kwesi-do not talk about a subject you have no clue. The foreign and african troops in Mali are not there to share a booty or sing praises to have their bread buttered. They are there to save our brothers and sisters who are being tortured, maimed and murdered by the arabs who chased us from our land-Tumbaktu because those ignorant arabs, the mohamedans wanted to convert us to their ways of warp thinking and backwardness.History is reapeating it self.Do you,-Kwesi,know why the union of Ghana,Guinea and Mali was born? You are jounalist and a newspaper owner but it seems to me that you are not well versed in african history. To question Ghana army about their psychological well being and alertness for the war in Mali is an insult to our noble and dedicated men and fighters. There are jounalists from all over the world on the ground in Mali to report what is going on and happening to our unfortunate brothers and sisters in Mali, and you Kwesi Pratt as usual exihibiting your arrogance and ignorance. This generation can speak and write english better than Pa Shakespeare,-except that they lack common sense.Kwesi,-just keep your loyalty to the mobsters in the castle for your daily bread and leave the Mali war to the fighting men and not coward and hypocrite like you who only thinks about his stomach.Shame on you-Kwesi. The real question to be asked is not about our psychological preparedness, but should we be there? and the answer must be an overwhelming no. There is no reason why we should be embroiled in a war that began in the corridors of European capitals. We need to wake up to the discreet machinations at work and not give these adherents of war and destruction a pretext for recolonization by the back door.Europe is broke and are looking to new areas of finance and resource. The election of Hollande in France, the removal of Sarkozy and the assasination of Gaddafi were not accidental, but a carefully orchestrated stategy to justify long term European military presence on African soil. Did we not try to solve the Libyan crisis in house? and they refused. Why do they want us to help now. I tell you why, because they want a diplomatic platform, an acceptance that the Continent is behind them.Ghana should not send any troops.if we do, it would betrayal of all that we have stood for as a country prepared to defend the progressive values of freedom from all forms of oppression in any guise.

Pratt you are right. Am a soldier and even in sierra leone, it was never easy. Malian rebels led by alqaeda is a different game all together. This warefare is going to be different from the normal wars fought in all the countries Ghana has partaken in peacekeeping or enforcement. It is not going to be engagements, advancement or meeting the enemy face to face. the force will definitely encounter heavy casualties which ghana may be affected. Going to war is not force and for that matter if the CDS and defence minister wants a political mark, they should look somewhere else.
Eventhough ghanaian troops are not going as combat force for now yet there the need to consider the type of war they are going to fight with also affiliations with the rebels not forgeting the language barrier also. I want to use this opportunity to advice contributors to be polite and reasonable when contributing to articles like this devoid of insults and profain words.
