Human Rights lawyer and Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu has petitioned the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service over the child marriage case at Nungua in Accra.

The petition filed on April 2nd requests the arrest, investigation, and prosecution of the Ga traditional priest, Gborbu Wulomo over his traditional marriage to a 12-year-old girl in Nungua on March, 30.

Mr. Sosu considers the Wulomo’s conduct criminal, constituting a violation of both local and international laws on child care and protection.

He highlights that, “the said marriage is illegal, null and void because by law a child under 18 cannot enter marriage.”

Mr. Sosu also argues that, although traditional religious arguments are being made in support of marriage, the Constitution is clear in Article 26 concerning the limitations of traditions and customs.

“For clarity, Article 26 (1) provides as follows “Every person is entitled to enjoy, practice, profess, maintain and promote any culture, language, tradition or religion subject to the provisions of this Constitution” It provides further in Article 26(2) that “All customary practices which dehumanize or are injurious to the physical and mental well-being of a person are prohibited” It is my respectful view that the customary practice being referred to are unconstitutional and not backed by the laws of Ghana.

The MP therefore demanded an investigation be launched into what he refers to as a “potential defilement,” and that the priest be prosecuted.

So the honorable wulomo didn’t see all these insults? Why is that, only afrifa was invited and not the rest of these guys?

Am all for tradition in Ghana and I respect tradition and have nothing against GA traditions but is about time, these selective hatred against ASHANTIS stop in Ghana!!

Board Chair of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, has claimed that contrary to public perception that Ghanaian values and norms frown on LGBT+ activities, there is evidence to show that such activities exist in some local cultures.

Speaking on Joy Newsfile on Saturday, March 2, 2024, Prof. Gadzekpo alluded that Ghanaian cultures, including Ga and Nzema, have homosexual practices embedded in them.

The whole argument Mr Sam George advances, and it seems very logical that if you go into our history, because Kojo Besia is a coinage, it doesn’t mean that we practice it; look, I have heard people who were against the bill but have admitted that when you look into some of our cultural practices, there are homosexual practices. It didn’t come from the West,” she stated.

Probed which specific Ghanaian cultures had traits of homosexual practices, Prof Gadzekpo pointed to the people of Ga and Nzema.

“Which one? Well, I was in a training, and somebody told us that when you look in… there are practices in Ga culture, there are practices in Nzema culture, for example, that sociologists have documented,” she stated.

The Human Rights and Family Values Bill, otherwise known as the Anti-Gay Bill, was recently approved by the Parliament of Ghana and is currently awaiting presidential approval to become law.

However, according to Prof. Gadzekpo, the law which criminalises same-sex activities is an affront to the fundamental human rights permitted by the Constitution of Ghana.

She has thus served notice that CDD will seek the annulment of the bill at the Supreme Court if it is so passed into law.

This woman said this about a whole tribe but was never invited? Why??

Again, in Ghana, traditional authorities can INVITE SOMEONE TO COME and explain themselves? Ain’t we a republic anymore!
