Tamale taxi drivers protest over ''Mahama Camboo''

Taxi drivers in the Tamale Municipality are protesting against the use of tricycles which was nicknamed ''Mahama Camboo'' for commercial purposes.

According to the drivers who spoke to Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the use of these tricycles has affected their sales and is gradually fading them out of the Metropolis. They claim passengers now prefer to use 'Mahama Camboo' in place of the taxi which was former a means of transportation for both traders and residents alike.

Some them revealed, the tricycles charge fares which are slightly lower than what they the taxi drivers charge hence the reason why some people prefer to patronize.

"We voted for the NDC to provide us with jobs and the environment for our businesses to thrive and not to deny us of our livelihoods by bringing in these tricycles to come and compete and take our jobs. I am not a graduate to be offered a job at a bank, or a firm and so i drive this taxi to feed my family.
So it is improper to allow these tricycles to deny us our daily bread," one driver told Nyankonton Mu Nsem.

President Mahama in November last year distributed the 'Mahama Camboo' to some youth in the Upper East and Northern regions to be used as taxis to ease the transportation difficulties in these regions.

The distribution was made through the Micro finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).

However, the taxi drivers believes it is time to stop the tricycles from operating as taxis since it is creating very serious challenges for them.

They have called on authorities to intervene or they will advise themselves.
