'Smacks of ethnic politics' – Prof. Marfo jabs Dormaahene over Bawumia running mate comment

Professor Charles Ofori Marfo, a former president of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has criticized Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, for his public appeal to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia regarding the appointment of a possible running mate.

Professor Marfo stated that such matters should not be addressed in the public domain and emphasized the importance of discretion in handling sensitive issues.

He suggested that Dormaahene could have communicated his request to the Vice President privately, following their formal meeting.

In Professor Marfo's view, Dormaahene's public appeal "smacks of ethnic politics.”

"Because people have the right to respond to whatever one says, we need to be careful with our utterances. In the law courts, certain issues are discussed in-camera because they need to be refined.

"The truth is, not everything that we say is meant for the public domain. Therefore, the Dormaahene had the opportunity, after meeting the Vice President, to privately call and present his request.

"However, what he did clearly smacks of ethnic politics,” he said on a panel discussion on Oyerepa TV on May 9, 2024.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II advised the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against focusing solely on one particular region when selecting a running mate for the 2024 elections.

Expressing his concerns during a meeting between Bawumia and the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, the Dormaahene said: "I have seen you haven’t selected a running mate yet, even if you have, I haven’t heard.

“Sometimes a certain region wants to prove that it is only from there that you are supposed to select your running mate,” he submitted.

He continued, "But I don't see it that way. Please, there are lots of people in the other regions, so if your focus goes on just one particular region, only they will vote for you and the rest of us will vote against you."

He listed notable individuals from the region highlighting their suitability for the position of running mate.

“Even though I am not saying selecting others from other regions is not good we also want the best for our people, Martin Adjei Korsah, Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Kwaku Agyemang Manu, all of them qualify for such positions,” he added.
