Private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw has called on the Ashanti Regional Police to appeal to a higher authority for peace to prevail in the ongoing standoff between them [the police] and residents of Krofrom.

According to the legal practitioner, the police must critically examine the issues and refer it to respectable persons if it is beyond them.

“I think that we need to jaw-jaw on this matter and the police must also look at the issues critically, if it’s beyond them, they should appeal to the higher authorities to deal with the matter. And I think that they should refer the matter to Asantehene and they should also bring in peace makers so that they would sit down and jaw-jaw and find an amicable solution to this crisis,” Mr. Ampaw told Kapital News.

Maurice Ampaw has also asked the family to challenge the integrity of the autopsy report in the law court if they are not satisfied with it.

He is also calling on the youth to also seek legal redress if they feel the police have been unfair to them, instead of resorting to protests.

He argues that because residents of Krofrom have given the police a reason to suspect that they are likely to create violence, the police have the responsibility to prepare.

“If you have shown that you are likely to cause violence by burning tyres and attacking the police, the fear of the police is that any demonstration would expose that area to a security threat,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye has warned, police in the region will deal ruthlessly with persons who take the laws into their hands.

DCOP Kofi Boakye gave this warning following the unrest that has been triggered after the death of a 27-year old who was allegedly brutalized by police officers from the Asawase Police Command.

Irate youth in the area on Tuesday went on rampage after a release of an autopsy report that indicated the victim; Richmond Osei died a natural death.

Kofi Boakye has warned to deal with the youth if they decide to go contrary to the law.

“I must repeat that any act of indiscipline will be met with the necessary force. And I hope that when the time comes, Human Rights Activists would not complain,” Kofi Boakye warned.
