President John Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the frustration they are going through as a result of electricity over-billing “will be fixed.”

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been ordered by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to suspend its new billing software following anomalies with the system, which has sparked public agitation.

Touching on the issue, President Mahama said cabinet has approved the “Inter-Agency Taskforce put together to resolve complaints from the public regarding the bills and charges being received from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in respect of our consumption of power.”

He added: “I share the frustration of Ghanaians affected by this anomalous situation and will do everything possible to find a speedy and sustainable solution to this issue.

“The present situation has to end, and I assure my fellow Ghanaians that this too, like other challenges we have faced together, will be fixed.”

The task force consists of the Energy Commission, the ECG, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and other stakeholders. It has been given a June 3, 2016, deadline to submit its report and solution “for immediate implementation”.
