Bawku youth urged to respect law and order

Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, Chief Imam of Bawku on Tuesday condemned the Sunday attack on the Bawku Police Station by some youth of the town.

A group of young people last Sunday reacted violently after the police had invited a Muslim cleric to assist them investigate a case of migrant children who were found begging on the streets of Bawku town.

Following the violence during which the youth destroyed some vehicles and physically assaulted a police officer, the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC) met with all the Muslim clerics and some religious leaders in the Bawku Municipality to resolve the issue.

Alhaji Mohammed speaking at the meeting said the act was unlawful and that as young people there was the need for them to channel their energies into profitable ventures instead of dissipating it on social vices such as riots and other criminal acts.

He urged them to eschew violence and respect law and order as that would make them responsible citizens of the country.

He said the youth were the driving force for national development and advised them to make good use of the opportunities the country offered to acquire marketable skills while they were still young.

The Chief Imam reminded the people in the area of the contribution the police made to the peace being enjoyed in the area today, and urged the youth to remain calm and be law abiding.

He assured the security apparatus in the area of the Muslim community’s commitment and cooperation to bring about lasting peace for the development of the area.

Mr Issaku Bukari, the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and Chairman of the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC), indicated that the issue had been resolved amicably within the two parties and that calm had returned to the area.

Mr Bukari hinted that police investigation was ongoing to ensure the perpetrators of last Sunday’s violence were brought to book in order to deter others from such lawless acts.

He called on the youth to desist from taking the law into their hands because it would end them in jail and jeopardize their dreams for the future.

Chief Superintendent of Police Lovelace Kaletse Tefutor, Bawku Divisional Police Commander reminded the youth of their right to seek information from any appropriate quarters on issues affecting the development of the area.
