Company awards scholarships to two students

The Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), in partnership with Alexiboam Company Limited, a Newmont sub-contractor, has awarded scholarships worth GH¢7, 110 to two Senior High School students in the Ahafo Mine take area of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL) in the Asutifi North District.

The scholarship packages covers tuition fees of the beneficiaries, Mad Kadijatu Liman Ibrahim, a first year science student of St Louis SHS and Master Emmanuel Oteng, a first year Arts student of Hwidiem SHS.

A statement signed by Mad Sabina Adu-Wusu, Communication Officer of NADeF, and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday, said the beneficiaries are from Kenyasi Number Two and Wamahinso.

The package, which is the first of its kind, is a partnership between NADeF and the Company to help highly motivated, brilliant, but needy students from the Asutifi North District.

Mr Alexander Boampong, the Chief Executive Officer of Alexiboam Company Limited, stressed the company’s commitment to support in producing quality human resource base required for development in the mine-take communities.

He advised the students in the area to study hard to also benefit from the scholarship.

Mr Kwame Saarah-Mensah, the Board Chairman of NADeF, called on the beneficiaries to learn hard to justify the packages provided them.

Mrs Elizabeth Opoku-Darko, the Community Development Superintendent of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, expressed gratitude to management of the Company, and called on other sub-contractors of the mine to emulate.

She said “this scholarship is not for parents to shirk their responsibility, but rather to support their efforts on educating their children”.

NADeF was established in May 2008, following two years of engagement with the Ahafo Social Responsibility Forum (ASRF), a key stakeholder group of Newmont Ahafo Mine.

The Foundation is funded with $1 of every ounce of gold sold and 1% of annual net pre-tax profit from the operations of the mine for community development.
